BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday urged the international community to pursue a new approach to climate governance that highlights green recovery and pledged China's further commitments for 2030 to tackling the global climate challenge at the virtual Climate Ambition Summit.
Chile appreciates the important strategic achievements China has made on such fronts as fighting COVID-19 and restoring economic growth, he said, adding that Xi's recent announcement of China's new measures on its nationally determined contributions to address climate change has made new important contributions to the world.
China has vowed to eradicate absolute poverty by the end of 2020. At the end of 2019, 52 counties in the northwest, southwest and south of the country remained on the poverty list.
The crisis caused by the pandemic bears testimony to the greater need to uphold the principles of multilateralism and to strengthen international cooperation, said Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen.
Despite rising unilateralism and protectionism in some countries, "China has shown its commitment to international cooperation, openness, rules-based free trade and multilateralism which are important for global economic recovery," said Wilson Lee Flores, a columnist for the English daily The Philippine Star.
