SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When William Hauf looks out his kitchen window, he sees rows of patio furniture that won't fit anywhere else."I just had to leave that stacked up out there," he says. "And I've got boxes of books in my garage right now that are unopened and brand new. Books that I haven't even seen yet."They're leftovers from Hauf's former, more successful life.In March, he sold his estate in Santaluz for million. Hauf had to sell it after losing millions of dollars himself in real estate and travel investments. RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Energy super-savers see summertime successHe's now renting a home in Carlsbad. Today, Hauf says he can't write a check for ,000. It's a key number because that's what San Diego Gas and Electric says he still owes them from his Santaluz home. Hauf got that roughly ,000 bill in March - an annual balance correction because the Santaluz home had solar, meaning he didn't have to pay monthly. SDG&E is now threatening to cut the electricity to his new home in Carlsbad if he doesn't pay the balance. "It's a nightmare, and I have no power to be able to confront this," Hauf said. SDG&E checked Hauf's meter in 2018, after a roughly ,000 annual bill. He said he hoped they would do more at the time. "They didn't investigate, they didn't identify, they didn't do an audit, they didn't do any of that," he said. Then came the ,000 whopper in March. In a statement, SDG&E noted that Hauf's bill worked out to 2 a month for the 7,600 square-foot Santaluz home. The company said it found no issues with the meter and that something in the home was being left on for long periods of time. SDG&E says it has advised Hauf to make sure his pool pump was not left running but Hauf said there's a big problem with that advice."There's no pool in the house," he said. "There's no swimming pool, there's no heater, there's no air conditioning."In other words, Hauf can't pinpoint what caused his annual bill to get to ,000 dollars, and he doesn't think SDG&E can either. A spokesman for SDG&E said the utility isn't always privy to the types of appliances customers have, but reiterated that Hauf's meter was functioning normally during that time. This is the utility's full statement:This solar customer received an annual true-up bill of ,111.46 for twelve months of energy use at his 7,600+ sq. foot home. If you average that out it would be approximately 2 per month. Over the past several years we have spoken with this customer regarding increasing energy usage and other billing related questions. In the spring of 2018, we tested the electric meter and found no issues. In a review of his March 2018 bill, we indicated that something in the household was turned on and left on for periods of time. The customer stated he would follow up with pool maintenance person to ensure the pump was not left running. 2904

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When San Diego County leaders suspended in-restaurant dining to slow the spread of the coronavirus, many businesses were left to figure out how to feed patrons.Sardina's Italian Restaurant & Bar on Morena Blvd. was one of those restaurants forced to transition to pickup or delivery only — but did so in a way that appeals to kids (or the kid in us) forced to stay home."Looking for something fun to do with your children (and/or partner!) during this unprecedented time?" the restaurant's Facebook post read, introducing a pizza kit. "The kit will include fresh pizza dough, cheese, pepperoni and sauce to make a medium size pizza at home!"RELATED:City of San Diego announces million relief package for local businesses due to coronavirusPopular South Bay restaurant offers big discount during in-dining banAfter opening Thursday, the restaurant told 10News it had sold 20 kits in its first three hours and expects a lot more orders. It's just one of the ways San Diego County restaurants are adjusting to continue serving families. The City of San Marcos has started a list of restaurants open for takeout or delivery in the city. The North Park area also has a list of eateries offering takeout options. In addition to specials at favorite restaurants, several food delivery platforms are also working to help out restaurants during COVID-19 closures. 1390

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traffic was blocked Wednesday near the San Diego Superior Court Central Courthouse due to a hazmat investigation. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed the substance was found in the building at 1100 Union St. about 5 p.m. A court employee said the substance was a white powder found on the 10th floor.Preliminary information from the scene indicates the situation was linked to a letter inside the courthouse, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. By 6:30 p.m., crews determined the powder was harmless. 537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California hospitals dealing with an “extreme” number of patients, many are struggling to find enough staff to run nearly full intensive care units. The state is urgently searching for 3,000 temporary medical workers to meet the demand, with a focus on nurses trained in critical care.“Staffing is our number one challenge,” Governor Gavin Newsom said last week. The state has contracted with two travel nursing agencies to find reinforcements, including San Diego-based Aya Healthcare, the nation’s largest travel nursing company.“California has the most needs in the country right now,” said Aya vice president Sophia Morris. “It’s the number one state that we’re seeing need.”Aya is onboarding new travel nurses as quickly as possible, Morris said, but at the moment they can’t keep up with demand. Right now, about one-third of the requests for travel nurses are going unfilled, said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.“We are adding hundreds and hundreds of new clinicians to start, particularly in California, every week,” Morris said. “So it’s coming. I think it just feels like it’s not coming fast enough.”Aya said it is on track to add about 780 more travel nurses in California by mid-January, on top of the 2,676 travel clinicians that are already on assignment in the state. But some experts say it’s a particularly challenging time to find spare nurses with so many regions across the country dealing with surges. On top of that, the number of registered nurses over 60 has dipped in California, according to researchers at UCSF, who found many older nurses stopped working out of concern for their health or the health of their family.California hospitals are confronting the shortage by trying to free up staff any way they can, including postponing certain medical procedures. The state has also temporarily loosened some restrictions. Typically, California requires one nurse for every two ICU patients. Regulators have temporarily relaxed that requirement to one nurse for every three ICU patients.California has also shortened the quarantine period for healthcare staff exposed in certain situations from 10 days to 7.The state has sent more than 600 temporary healthcare workers to hard-hit counties from the National Guard, the California Health Corps and other partnerships, but officials are still looking for more.State officials have even started reaching out to other countries like Australia and Taiwan to get much-needed medical workers. 2520

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two hundred elementary students are now the proud owners of new bikes, thanks to inmates at the Donovan Correctional Facility. For the fourth year, the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center teamed up with the correctional facility to make the event happen. The inmates raised over ,000 to pay for the bikes and accessories, with some donating money they earn working. “Certain decisions got me where I am, but better decisions that I made since then put me exactly where I am, in the fire department and on my way out the door,” said prison inmate, Andrew Breckenridge.Breckenridge was one of two inmates invited to attend that actual event at the Kroc Center. He’s being released from prison in 10 days. “It feels great, I mean I can’t describe the feeling, seeing the smiles on these kids faces,” said Breckenridge.Children who received bikes were chosen based on merit and good behavior at school. 933
