Potential accuracy issues with a widely used coronavirus test could lead to false results for patients, U.S. health officials warned. The Food and Drug Administration issued the alert Monday to doctors and laboratory technicians using Thermo Fisher’s TaqPath genetic test. Regulators said issues related to laboratory equipment and software used to run the test could lead to inaccuracies. The agency advised technicians to follow updated instructions and software developed by the company to ensure accurate results. The warning comes nearly a month after Connecticut public health officials first reported that at least 90 people had received false positive results for the coronavirus. Most of those receiving the false results were residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities.A spokeswoman for Thermo Fisher said the company was working with FDA “to make sure that laboratory personnel understand the need for strict adherence to the instructions for use.” She added that company data shows most users “follow our workflow properly and obtain accurate results.”The FDA said one possible problem was related to the incorrect use of equipment that rapidly spins samples in preparation for processing. The agency’s letter tells lab workers to follow new instructions developed by the company for this step.A second issue relates to the software used on Thermo Fisher’s testing platform. FDA said labs must upgrade the software to a new version.Dr. Albert Ko of Yale’s School of Public Health said the potential accuracy problems have “pretty serious implications” given that Thermo Fisher’s test is used widely both in the U.S. and around the world to screen for coronavirus. The FDA statement did not provide any details on how many test results may have been affected by the problem.Lab tests are the backbone of U.S. screening for coronavirus, accounting for more than half of the roughly 750,000 tests developed daily. The tests look for traces of coronavirus’ genetic material in nasal swabs taken from patients.Thermo Fisher’s test was granted emergency use by the FDA in mid-March. The test runs on a large, automated machine used in hospital, government and commercial labs to look for diseases such as HIV, hepatitis and flu.The FDA has used its emergency powers to OK more than 200 tests for coronavirus since February. No test is perfect and all are expected to give at least a small percentage of false negatives and false positives.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida inmate has been charged with trying to hire a hitman to kill a child and witnesses in exchange for ,000 and a sports car.Richard Palmer, 26, who is in the Polk County Jail for lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 12 years of age, asked a cellmate if he knew anyone who would be willing to kill the child and witnesses in his case in exchange for ,000 and a sports car, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.Palmer went on to tell his cellmate that he wanted the hired hitman to burn the home after murdering the victim and witnesses "to destroy evidence." He said he wanted it done so they couldn't go to court because "he didn't want to spend the rest of his life in prison.""Just when you think this man can't get any lower, after being arrested for doing horrible things to a child, now he's trying to hire someone to kill her and the witnesses. There's not one bit of remorse in this man for what he's done," Sheriff Grady Judd said.According to PCSO, the cellmate turned over Palmer's hand-drawn map of the targeted residence, complete with landmarks, and interior layout, which was intended to help the hired hitman with the task. An undercover detective then got involved, posing as someone interested in helping with the murders. Deputies said Palmer used the term "X Out" when talking about the planned murders with his cellmate and the detective. They said Palmer gave the detective directions and promised a sports car and money in advance as partial payment. Soon after the detective was given a security code question and Palmer arranged for 0 to be wired via Western Union.Detectives said they also recorded a conversation between Palmer and his cellmate, where Palmer used the coded phrase, "Exterminate all Jews," referring to his victims in the neighborhood. They said it was during that conversation that Palmer acknowledged drawing the map.PCSO charged Palmer with two counts of solicitation to commit murder (F-1), and one count of solicitation to commit arson (F-2). His first appearance in court is set for Thursday.Palmer's Criminal History: An affidavit against Palmer for the lewd and lascivious charges was originally filed in February 2013. He was arrested in Ohio and extradited to Polk County in November 2015. Deputies said he posted bail in December of that year, but was arrested again in September of 2017 on battery on a LEO and resisting arrest charges, which prompted his pre-trial release status to be revoked. 2636

President Donald Trump has told his longtime friend and sometimes lawyer Rudy Giuliani that he’s “going to beat” the coronavirus. The New York Post says Trump called Giuliani on Saturday to assure him he’s doing fine following a sobering assessment from the White House chief of staff.Trump reportedly told Giuliani on the call: “I feel I could get out of here right now. But they’re telling me there can always be a backstep with this disease. But I feel I could go out and do a rally."Trump also reportedly explained that he continued to engage in a high-risk activity despite the pandemic because he’s the “president of the United States. I can’t lock myself in a room. … I had to confront (the virus) so the American people stopped being afraid of it so we could deal with it responsibly.”He also said he hopes that by beating the virus he “will be able to show people we can deal with this disease responsibly, but we shouldn’t be afraid of it.”Trump is being treated around the clock by a team of doctors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. 1066

President Donald Trump gave his final Thanksgiving address to troops before President-elect Joe Biden takes office in January. After addressing service members, Trump answered questions for the first time since his November 3 election defeat, saying that it would be a “mistake” if the Electoral College votes for Biden next month.“This election was a fraud,” Trump claimed. Two weeks ago, a joint statement released by federal and state officials described the presidential election as the “most secure in American history.”The letter was signed by leaders of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission and the National Association of State Election Directors, among others. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency was established two years ago as a branch of Homeland Security during the Trump administration. In bold, the authors of the statement wrote, “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.” This statement matches those from secretaries of state and boards of election throughout the US.In response to the letter, Trump fired US election security head Chris Krebs.Biden is slated to send 306 electors on his behalf to state capitols on December 4, 36 more than the 270 needed to become president on January 20. Trump has been trying to stop Biden’s electors from casting a vote by whatever means possible. After more than three dozen failed legal challenges since the election, Trump has been meeting with state legislative leaders, most recently on Wednesday with Republican members of the Pennsylvania legislature.“I know one thing, Joe Biden did not get 80 million votes,” Trump claimed, even though the overwhelming majority of his legal team’s lawsuits have been thrown out.Trump again expressed frustration over “dumps” of votes. But legislators in Pennsylvania and Michigan refused to let election officials process mail-in ballots, which overwhelming were in favor of Biden, before Election Day. The result was Trump built up massive leads based off those who voted Election Day, but the overwhelmingly Democratic mail-in votes, which were processed in the days after the election, were enough to tilt the two key states in Biden’s favor.Another state Trump is contesting the results of is Georgia, which elected a Democratic nominee for the first time since Bill Clinton. Trump said he is going to hold a rally in Georgia on Saturday night, but the details of where are still unknown.Trump was asked if he would attend Biden’s inauguration. He said he knew the answer but would not say whether he would or not. It has been a long-standing tradition that the incoming and outgoing president meet at the White House and travel to the Capitol together before the inauguration.Trump said, “certainly I will, you know that,” when asked if he would leave the White House on January 20.The president criticized Biden for beginning to fill out his prospective cabinet before taking office. But Trump as president-elect had named his UN ambassador and secretary of education nominees on the day before Thanksgiving in 2016. Before answering questions on the election, Trump said it has been an “honor” serving as the military’s commander-in-chief."Many of you are very far from home, but today we hope, you know, that millions of American families are praying and gratitude for the sacrifices you make and the incredible, absolutely incredible job you do,” Trump said. “As president. I want to personally express my profound, thanks to each and every one of you for your devoted service to our nation. Our nation is doing very well. It's the highest honor of my life to serve as your commander-in-chief." 3789
