Cristina Schaffer was behind the lens as a professional photographer for 17 years, but the images she captured after COVID-19 are unlike anything she took before."I took out my biggest lens, I was about 20 feet away she opened up her door and had words writing on her hand and she was such a bright light totally happy," Cristina described of a woman she photographed from behind a window who was battling stage 4 breast cancer.It's all part of her 'front porch portrait' collection."They come to front porch and I just direct them from there. Each shoot's about 10 minutes unless its a big family."Cristina started the project after COVID-19 forced everyone in."It was like 'let's take photos and capture a moment in time' and this moment in time is crazy unprecedented and I think that's what attracts people."The photos were all taken from a distance. "I let everyone know masks signs props are all welcome they can come out in their pajamas or they can dress up to the nines whatever they want I'm just there to capture them on their front porchHer fee was a donation. "Every dollar to goes feeding San Diego. is for four meals so that really makes a difference," she described.Some people gave more and in mid-July, she raised nearly ,000."The compassion and gratitude I feel coming from everyone and being able to support the community at the same time has been incredible."She also proved even amid a global pandemic, a photo was still worth a thousand words. 1485
Conditions on a breeder's property during an animal rescue operation near Nashville were so toxic that the leader of the rescue team nearly died from ammonia poisoning.Scotlund Haisley, the founder of Animal Rescue Corps, led a team along with sheriff's deputies to the home of a breeder. It was called Operation Noah's Ark.They rescued 150 animals from horrible conditions - conditions that were so bad, Haisley was poisoned by fumes and needed a blood transfusion to survive.Haisley wasn't feeling well, but he was still up and around two days later giving a tour of the shelter."This is what it takes to care for 150 animals. All of these volunteers," said Haisley pointing to his team.Moments later, he became violently sick.ARC has made hundreds of rescues over the years, almost all of them are in deplorable conditions.Yet, this one was in many ways the worst and most dangerous. Inside the structures, Haisley found an unbelievable amount of feces and urine, which produced the highest ammonia levels he'd ever encountered. He still went in."The animals were in there. They were suffering greatly. We had to get them out," said Haisley.Free from that toxic environment, the animals immediately began getting better, but Haisley got worse."Extreme nausea, couldn't hold food or beverages down and very exhausted," Haisley said describing his symptoms.Haisley talked to us later by phone after his release from the hospital for what turned out to be acute ammonia poisoning which required a massive blood transfusion. Doctors told him he nearly died."I've experienced ammonia before. This is a whole new experience for me," said Haisley.However, it won't change his mission. The experience made Haisley even more determined to rescue animals.He now knows, more than ever, that no living creature should ever live in such conditions.Experts say the toxic fumes found at some deplorable sites where animals are rescued can be comparable with those found at a meth lab.Haisley says crews often will wear oxygen masks, but now for extreme cases, they are looking to buy some protective full-body suits. 2187
Customers are still sitting down for a cold beer at Joyride Brewing in Edgewater, Colorado.“We always talk about stopping and smelling the hops. It’s all about the joy ride of life,” said Grant Babb, the owner of Joyride Brewing.That’s despite new state rules that state bars must serve food to stay open, and Joyride doesn't serve food.“It makes you lose a little sleep at night, not knowing every day when you wake up if you have to do something different. It’s trying to shoot at a bullseye and just watching it constantly move,” said Babb.Babb had to make arrangements with multiple food trucks and the restaurant down the street to stay open. That’s because the recent spike in COVID-19 cases has led the state to put its economic restart plans on hold.“In our case, we schedule out food trucks about a month and a half in advance, and we’re working with only the food trucks we’re trusted partners with,” said Babb.Colorado isn’t the only state backtracking due to the surge. According to a tracker from the New York Times, 15 states are pausing plans to reopen and six are reversing course and shutting some things back down.Arizona is one of those states where bars, gyms, and theaters have been ordered closed once again. Restaurants there fear the same might happen to them soon if new COVID-19 cases aren’t curbed.“You can’t simply turn off and turn on a restaurant operation,” said Steve Churci, the head of the Arizona Restaurant Association. He says the toll of shutting down those businesses for a second time would be crushing.“If you were to shut down, what happens to the suicide rate? Does that go up? What happens to the homelessness rate, people losing their homes? So, there’s a whole other sad and unfortunate contingent that would be impacted by this,” said Churci.Churci says service industry workers employ almost a quarter-million people and the state has lost 5 million in revenue from food sales. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Navy officials say a helicopter crewman was killed last week in a fuel tank accident at Naval Air Station North Island.Officials say Aircrewman 1st Class Jonathan Clement was taken to the hospital after a fuel tank detached from an HH-60H Seahawk helicopter, striking him and a fellow officer on July 30.The 31-year-old later died at the hospital the following day, according to the Navy Times. The other sailor was treated and released from the hospital after suffering minor injuries, officials say.Both sailors were assigned to the “Firehawks” of North Island-based Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 85, the Times reported.The Navy Safety Center reported the incident on August 6, but only indicated that the helicopter crew was conducting ‘hot seat” training when the accident happened.Hot seat training is conducted so crews can practice switching out from an aircraft without turning off the engines.Clement was an 11-year Navy veteran originally from Florida. 1003
