WASHINGTON, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. astronauts conducted the first of four spacewalks for space shuttle Endeavour's STS-134 mission on Friday morning, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said.According to the U.S. space agency, Endeavour's mission specialists Andrew Feustel and Greg Chamitoff completed the six-hour, 19-minute spacewalk at 9:29 a.m. EDT (1329 GMT). They successfully installed antennas for the External Wireless Communication system, routing cables, setting up the antenna, installing handrails, and connecting power cables.Because of a carbon dioxide sensor failure in Chamitoff's spacesuit, flight controllers limited his spacewalk time to about six hours 20 minutes, 10 minutes less than the planned six hours and 30 minutes. There was no indication his suit's carbon dioxide levels would rise. However, they deferred tasks to remove a micrometeoroid debris shield to access and attach some of the connection points. This was the 245th spacewalk conducted by U.S. astronauts. It was Feustel's fourth spacewalk for a total time of 27 hours and 17 minutes, and Chamitoff's first.Endeavour lifted off on Monday morning from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, to deliver to the International Space Station a 2-billion-dollar, multinational particle detector known as the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS).AMS, a particle physics detector, is designed to search for various types of unusual matter by measuring cosmic rays. Its experiments are designed to help researchers study the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter, strange matter and antimatter.
BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- As of Jan. 28, 77.4 million mu (5.16 million acres) of crops had been harmed by the ongoing drought, and 2.57 million people were faced with drinking water shortages in China, the national drought control authorities said Sunday.Local governments of the affected regions must make efforts to monitor drought conditions, speed up the building of water projects, increase drought-fighting material reserves and grant subsidies to the drought-stricken population, said officials at a meeting attended by Chen Lei, deputy head of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).The National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecast the drought to worsen in the next two months, saying Sunday that the drought-hit north China and regions along the Yellow and Huaihe rivers would receive little rain or snow in February and March.Chen, also minister of water resources, stressed the importance of drought relief efforts, guaranteeing agricultural production and ensuring drinking water safety for boosting consumers' confidence, controlling consumer prices and inflation and maintaining economic growth.Since last Autumn when the drought began, local authorities have assigned 9.55 million people and 2.15 million sets of drought-fighting machineries to draw 8.2 billion cubic meters of water to irrigate 110 million mu of crop land.
BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhuanet) -- No formalin has been found in the milk powder imported from S. Korea into China due to different milk sources, the general agency of South Korea's Maeil Dairies said Tuesday. The declaration came after Maeil Dairies, South Korea's third-largest dairy company, was found to have produced milk from cows given feed tainted with formalin. The agency said that the milk used in the dairy products exported to China comes from New Zealand, Europe and other places outside South Korea, so Chinese consumers should have nothing to worry about.Formalin, a liquid form of formaldehyde gas, was largely used in the past as a disinfectant, pesticide and bactericide for preservation of biological specimens. Its use has dwindled over the years due to health concerns. After the incident, South Korea has decided to conduct emergency inspections on milk sold in the market by four major dairy companies, to check the presence of formalin.
