ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) - When an earthquake strikes seconds of warning can save lives. That's why, for decades, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has been working with partners to create a warning system to do just that. "Eventually we would like to have something like an Amber Alert where you would get a text message that says shaking is about to occur in your area in a few seconds," said Alex Cadiao, a USGS Field Engineer.He's part of a small team which travels to remote parts of the state to install earthquake sensors into the ground. They provided 10News exclusive access to the region's newest sensor in Orange County. RELATED: 'ShakeAlert' message buzzes San Diego County phones"Ultimately we just want a grid across the whole state," said Christopher Bruton, Research Engineer at Caltech's Seismological Laboratory. There are 45 sensors throughout San Diego County, and dozens more are planned for the rest of Southern California. "The more sensors we have, the better the data, the greater coverage we have and better the quality, and faster response time of these stations," said Cadiao. The sensors work by detecting the initial, less-destructive waves of an earthquake, alerting people shaking is coming and to take cover.Seconds of warning can be critical for surgeons in the operating room, halting trains, or shutting off gas lines. The City of Los Angeles currently has the ShakeAlert app available to people in the city; the hope is that technology will eventually work statewide. "I get a lot of gratification knowing one day this will help save a lot of lives," said Cadiao. The engineers say it will likely be a few more years until all of Southern California will get ShakeAlert warnings on their cell phones. It's being tested in small groups, but they want to make sure the technology is reliable before making it available to everyone. 1888

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) --The man accused of crashing into a car in Oceanside while under the influence, killing three people and injuring three others appeared in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. Mason Fish is accused of driving under the influence during the February 5 crash. Oceanside Police say he ran a red light on South Coast Highway at Oceanside Boulevard and crashed his Toyota Tacoma into a Mazda, killing three woman and injuring three others. Petra Arango, 40, of Oceanside; Rufina Rodriguez, 74, of Fallbrook; and 56-year-old Eloina Arango, of Mexico, were identified as the victims. A 13-year-old girl, who neighbors and friends call Kelly, was ejected from the vehicle and seriously injured. Aquilino Arango Ojeda, 82, of Fallbrook; and 43-year-old Rey David Velasco Herrera, of Oceanside, were in the front seats of the vehicle and also seriously injured. He added, in regards to the crashes, that Fish "tapped" a car at a red light and was sideswiped.The judge Tuesday found that there is sufficient evidence to send the case to trial. He is due back in court August 20. On Tuesday, Arlington National Cemetery announced that the annual Wreaths Across America event scheduled for next month would be canceled due to coronavirus concerns. But later in the day, President Donald Trump said he is forcing the event to go on, despite concerns about the coronavirus.Earlier in the day, organizers said they could “no longer envision a way to safely accommodate the large number of visitors” at the event.“We did not make this decision lightly. Despite the controls developed to disperse potential crowds in time and space, and required personal safety protocols, we determined that hosting any event of this scale risked compromising our ability to accomplish our core mission of laying veterans and their eligible family members to rest,” stated Karen Durham-Aguilera, Executive Director, Office of Army National Cemeteries and Arlington National Cemetery. “We reviewed various options to safely execute this long standing event and held numerous consultations with WAA leadership and local government and public health officials.”Trump, however, called the decision, “ridiculous” in a tweet.“I have reversed the ridiculous decision to cancel the Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Farmers in Oceanside are gearing up to harvest a never before seen crop in San Diego County: Coffee.“We have an aggressive plan to make Southern California the next leader in the super specialty coffee industry,” said Jay Ruskey of Frinj Coffee.He began working with farms in San Diego five years ago to start planting coffee in old avocado orchards.This summer, they will finally harvest their first crop.“We tried to choose the varieties that not only perform well, but have a certain flavor characteristic that the consumer really enjoys,” said Ruskey.Frinj has also been growing coffee in Santa Barbara, where they have already started harvesting the beans.Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is the first local outlet to sell it. Their website has one pound of the Cuicateco grown by Frinj for 0.“If the coffee quality matches the price, that's all that matters,” said Jeff Taylor, president of Bird Rock Coffee.They recently sent the coffee to the website, Coffee Review, which gave the Cuicateco a 92 out of 100.He said he has been working for six months with Ruskey to get the coffee in his stores. He hopes to get beans from Oceanside as well when they become available in the fall.“I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge,” said Taylor of San Diego county’s potential as a coffee growing region.Ruskey is already ahead of him, planning to double the number of plants they have already in 2019.“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” said Ruskey. 1594

OMAHA, Nebraska — Just before 5 p.m local time Monday, Omaha Police were called to the scene of a traffic incident involving a school bus near an intersection in North Omaha. Police later confirmed the boy, 8-year-old Haji Mohamed of Omaha, had died. According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location."After several students disembarked the bus, the bus driver continued her route westbound on Sprague Street," the report states. "As the bus was traveling between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, an 8-year old male child who had just disembarked the bus, attempted to run across Sprague Street from north to south. As soon as the child entered the roadway, he was struck by the bus."The boy was transported by emergency personnel to Nebraska Medicine in extremely critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the boy was pronounced dead, the OPD release states.  Early OPD reports indicated the elementary-aged boy was transported with "extremely critical injuries" to Nebraska Medicine, said Sgt. Chuck Casey of the OPD incident unit, who gave an update near the scene. Omaha Public Schools later confirmed in a statement that the injured boy is a second-grader from Springville?Elementary School, located near 60th and Girard streets, about five miles northwest of the incident.The boy's family was with him at the hospital, Casey said.Early reports indicated the boy was struck by the front of the bus — the only vehicle involved in the incident — but the scene will be under investigation for some time, he said."At this time, Omaha Public Schools administrators, Student Transportation of America and OPS Student Transportation are cooperating with the Omaha Police Department as they investigate the incident," according to a statement from OPS early Monday evening. "Administrators are also supporting and working with the family of the student."Casey said initial reports were that the boy was a passenger on the bus.
