INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman who comforted an IUPUI student during her last moments after being struck by a school bus Monday hopes her family knows everyone did all they could for her.Fatima Hassuneh, 18, was crossing a street at an intersection on IUPUI’s campus around 1:30 p.m. Monday when a bus attempting to make a left-hand turn struck her.School officials said the bus was under contract with Indianapolis Public Schools, but owned by Durham Transportation. Witnesses and IUPUI officials say Hassuneh had the right of way.Hassuneh was a pre-med student who aspired to become a doctor, according to a post by the IUPUI Muslim Student Association.“Fatima, an aspiring doctor, was a sophomore in biology and was known for her kind heart and sense of humor,” the Muslim Student Association wrote. “She was a gift among us and has returned to her Lord. She was very active in our community and would often lead interfaith events. May Allah allow her to continue to reap the benefits of those deeds.”At the time of the crash, Alysa Schultz and her boyfriend were sitting at a red light at the very same intersection. She said that as soon as she saw what happened, her boyfriend started calling 911 while she rushed to check on Hassuneh.“As I was kind of kneeling there next to her, all she was doing was just holding her hand out, so I just grabbed it and held onto it,” Schultz said. “People were getting mad, saying, ‘Don’t touch her. Don’t move her.’ But at the same time, that one little bit of humanity – just hold on to her hand – that’s probably all she wanted.”Schultz said she didn’t know Hassuneh – but that her friends and classmates have messaged her since telling her what a wonderful person she was.“I had a lot of people message me on Facebook saying how awesome of a person she was and how beautiful and smart and driven and how involved she was,” Schultz said. “I really wish I would have known her.”Schultz, a former IUPUI student herself, said she hopes Hassuneh’s family can take some comfort from all of the efforts made to save her.“I hope that her family knows that there were six people calling the police, four people running around the corner to grab any police who were nearby,” Shultz said. “Everybody was stopping and blocking off the road so that no one could come near the situation. Everyone at IUPUI was like a family doing everything they possibly could for her, and I really hope that’s comforting to the family.”An Islamic funeral prayer, a janaza, was planned for Tuesday night for Hassuneh at the Alhuda Foundation in Fishers. INDIANAPOLIS — A man who had to be rescued from a retention pond on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday after he jumped in to rescue his dog has died. The incident happened in The Masters apartment complex at about 11:30 a.m., near Masters Road and E. 91st Street.The Indianapolis Fire Department says the man went after one of his dogs when the pup went into the icy water.The victim, a man in his 20s, was not able to get out of the water.Two residents of the complex saw the man trying to rescue his dog and tried to help. Both fell into the water but were able to get out and were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The victim was pulled from the water by a rescue team and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released. The victim's dog is expected to be OK.  859

INDIANAPOLIS — A junior high student tested positive for COVID-19 after the district's first day back to school.The superintendent for at Greenfield-Central Junior High School sent an email to parents and students notifying them of the positive coronavirus case late last week.According to the message, the student attended school for part of the day and was then taken to the school's clinic and isolated.The child was sent to school despite having a COVID-19 test pending. The superintendent says anyone who was in close contact with the student has already been notified.The Hancock County Health Department released the following statement about the incident:"On July 30, 2020, the Hancock County Health Department was notified of a positive COVID-19 test result for a student that was in attendance at Greenfield-Central Junior High. The Hancock County Health Department and the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation (G-CCSC) officials followed their COVID-19 response plan that was jointly created prior to the beginning of the school year. Local health officials immediately notified the COVID-19 contact for the G-CCSC. Parents and guardians of the students who had been exposed were notified by school officials. Those students will remain in quarantine according to CDC recommendations. As the contact tracing process continues, Local and State Health Departments will continue to coordinate with the G-CCSC officials."Parents with children who attend the school are frustrated and concerned."Why would you send your child to school knowing that you are waiting for this result?" Kelley Thompson said.Monika Ogle's daughter just started seventh grade on Thursday."So, of course in my mind I'm thinking 'here we go,'" Ogle said. "Honestly, I was just waiting for the phone call but I never received one so hopefully that means everything is good."Superintendent Dr. Harold Olin said contract tracing has now started and a large group of students that were in close contact with the student are in quarantine for 14 days."It's certainly unfortunate for those families that were contacted last night," Olin said. "They have this excitement about being back for the first day of school and that very night getting a phone call saying your child is going to need to stay home for two weeks. Disappointing? Yes. The word you asked me about yes I'm disappointed."Olin said the focus now is on educating parents of expectations."If a pending test is out there we would think that parents would not send their students to us until that was clear," Olin said."The guidelines say that if your kid is running a fever or having symptoms you keep your kid home," Thompson said. "That's common sense."Parents are being asked to self-monitor their children. That money was meant to buy Christmas gifts for her family."It took me a whole year to save that money," Ogle said. So she bought 5 in Amazon gift cards at her local Kroger store, and then this happened:"I got home 20 minutes later, tried to use those cards, and they said they have already been used—that's impossible. Injured Buffalo protester Martin Gugino has been released from the hospital, nearly four weeks after he was pushed to the ground by two Buffalo police officers.Gugino, 75, will be recovering at an undisclosed location to protect his privacy, according to his attorney Kelly Zarcone."Martin wants to thank the entire hospital staff for their exceptional dedication and professionalism," Zarcone said. "He received truly outstanding care and for that, he is grateful."Gugino has been at ECMC since June 4, when he was shoved to the ground outside Buffalo City Hall by officers Aaron Torgalski and Robert McCabe. Gugino's skull was fractured when the back of his head hit the sidewalk. The fall, which was captured on cell phone video, happened moments after Gugino approached a moving line of officers.Torgalski and McCabe are facing second-degree assault charges.
