Australia is ordering automakers to recall more than two million vehicles fitted with potentially deadly airbags. The Australian government said Wednesday that the cars contain airbags made by Takata, the Japanese company at the heart of a scandal that has led to tens of millions of vehicle recalls around the world in recent years.Takata airbags have been linked to at least 23 deaths globally, including one in Australia, according to a statement by the Australian Treasury. A defect can cause the airbags to explode and blast shrapnel into drivers and passengers.Voluntary recalls in Australia have previously been announced by big car brands including BMW, Chevrolet, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota. But the government said those steps haven't been enough to deal with the danger, leaving around 2.3 million vehicles with the defective airbags still on the country's roads."The voluntary recall process has not been effective in some cases, and some manufacturers have not taken satisfactory action to address the serious safety risk which arises after the airbags are more than six years old," said Michael Sukkar, an assistant Australian Treasury minister. The new compulsory recall includes models made by major carmakers such as Ford, Mercedes Benz, Tesla and Volkswagen. The total number of affected cars in Australia is 4 million, or nearly one in five passenger vehicles on the country's roads. All the faulty Takata airbags have to be replaced by the end of 2020, according to the government.Wednesday's announcement followed an investigation by Australia's consumer watchdog, the Treasury said.Takata's faulty airbags have led to massive recalls around the world over the past decade. In the United States, more than 40 million vehicles were affected, and authorities say the recalls could take until 2023 to complete. The scandal led to the slow and painful demise of Takata, which started out as a textile manufacturer more than 80 years ago and later came to specialize in seat belts and other auto safety equipment. The company has pleaded guilty to corporate criminal charges and agreed to pay a billion fine in the U.S. It filed for bankruptcy last year and much of its operations are being taken over by Key Safety Systems, a Chinese-owned company based in Michigan. 2323

ATLANTA, Ga. – While residents along the Gulf Coast seek shelter from Hurricane Laura, they should still keep the threat of COVID-19 in mind.Emergency managers, shelter managers, and public health professionals are taking measures to reduce the possible spread of the coronavirus among people who seek safety in a disaster shelter during severe weather events like this. For those staying in a shelter during the storm, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offered some tips to lower the risk of coronavirus infection:Preparing to shelterIf you need to evacuate, the CDC says to prepare a “go kit” with personal items you cannot do without during an emergency. That includes items that can help protect you and others from COVID-19, like hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, soap, disinfectant wipes, and two masks for each person.Know a safe place to shelter and have several ways to receive weather alerts, such as the National Weather Service’s cell phone alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, or NWS alerts on Twitter.Find out if your local public shelter is open, in case you need to evacuate your home and go there. Your shelter location may be different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Follow guidance from your local public health or emergency management officials on when and where to shelter.Make a plan and prepare a disaster kit for your pets. Find out if your disaster shelter will accept pets. Typically, when shelters accommodate pets, the pets are housed in a separate area from people.Follow safety precautions when using transportation to evacuate. If you have to travel away from your community to evacuate, follow safety precautions for travelers to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.While in a public shelterPractice social distancing. Stay at least 6 feet from other people outside of your household.Follow CDC COVID-19 preventive actions—wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and follow shelter policies for wearing masks. Avoid sharing food and drink with anyone if possible.Follow disaster shelter policies and procedures designed to protect everyone in the shelter, especially those who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19, including older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions.Avoid touching high-touch surfaces, such as handrails, as much as possible. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol immediately after you touch these surfaces.Keep your living area in the shelter clean and disinfect frequently touched items such as toys, cellphones, and other electronics. If you feel sick when you arrive at the shelter or start to feel sick while sheltering, tell shelter staff immediately.Keeping children safe in sheltersTeach and reinforce everyday preventive actions for keeping children healthy.Make sure children aged 2 and older wear masks. Masks should not be used by children under the age of 2. They also should not be used by people having trouble breathing, or who are unconscious, incapacitated, or unable to remove the mask without assistance.Be a good role model—if you wash your hands often, your children are more likely to do the same.Help your children stay at least 6 feet away from anyone who is not in your household.Watch your child for any signs of illness and tell shelter staff if your child may be ill.Try to deal with the disaster calmly and confidently, as this can provide the best support for your children. Help children cope with emergencies. 3559

ATLANTA (AP) — Investigators in Georgia say Chicago rapper King Von was among three people shot and killed in an early shooting Friday outside a nightclub in Atlanta that also left three people wounded. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says King Von, whose real name is Dayvon Bennett, was with a group of men at the Monaco Hookah Lounge. When they arrived, two men approached the group in the parking lot and an argument escalated to gunfire. "The preliminary investigation indicates that Dayvon Bennett, aka King Von, and a group of men left the Opium Nightclub and went to the Monaco Hookah Lounge," GBI said in a statement. "Once there, two men approached the group in the parking lot, and the two groups of men started to argue with each other. The argument quickly escalated to gunfire between the two groups.On- and off-duty Atlanta police responded. Six men were ultimately shot. According to the Associated Press, the APD issued a statement saying its officers did not kill the rapper.Three are being treated for their injuries.Empire, Bennett's record label, released a statement via Twitter calling Bennett “a natural storyteller” whose latest album offered “an inside perspective on neighborhood life and trauma wrought by the criminal justice system.” 1275

AVALON, Calif. (AP) — The nonprofit organization that owns a majority of California’s Santa Catalina Island plans to boost eco-tourism by adding more bison to existing herds, recharging a debate over their environmental impacts. The Los Angeles Times reports the Catalina Island Conservancy says there has not been a bison calf born on the island in seven years and the herd size has dwindled to 100. The conservancy board is working to bring two pregnant bison to the island. A biologist says bison herds stay on isolated patches of grass and adding more animals will not result in more bison sightings by eco-tourists. 628

Attorney General Bill Barr has accepted an invitation to appear before the House Judiciary Committee on July 28, according to a statement from Kerri Kupec, the Director of Communications at Justice Department. The House Judiciary Committee has been conducting oversight hearings regarding potential political interference from Trump administration officials in certain cases connected to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.Several media outlets reported this week that Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-New York, had been considering issuing a subpoena to Barr to force his testimony.House Democrats on the Judiciary Committee claim that Barr has intervened on President Donald Trump's behalf in numerous instances since he replaced Jeff Sessions as AG in February 2019.Over the weekend, Barr announced that Geoffrey Berman — who had been investigating Trump's financials in is role as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York — had resigned. Berman quickly refuted the claim, saying he had learned of his "resignation" in the media. Barr later announced that he had fired Berman, and Berman only agreed to step aside when he was assured that his hand-pick successor could continue investigating unimpeded for the time being. 1260
