SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sea World employees went on a rescue mission Saturday to free a Sea lion pup from a plastic ribbon wrapped around his neck on Boomer's Beach.The timing is poetic, on World Oceans Day. A day that "provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean," according to WorldOceansDay.org.Sea World Animal Care Specialist Brooke Hubbard said they had been monitoring the pup and received another call Saturday. This time it sounded like the 2-3-year-old sea lion was in an area where they could safely remove the ribbon.A rescue that saved the mammal's life, "when there is lining around it's neck it can constrict it's airways and it's esophagus making it so they can't breathe or eat over time," Hubbard said.Video from her supervisor's perspective shows what it was like when the team snuck up on the sea lion, threw their net and cut the ribbon off with a pair of ordinary scissors.When they released the Sea lion, he scooted back to the ocean, "that's the best feeling in the world, especially since we didn't have to bring it back here and rehabilitate it," she said.Hubbard said this is is completely preventable, "please don't litter at the beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released video Thursday of a random assault outside a North Park 7-Eleven.The assault happened February 15 about 9 p.m. at the store on 3019 Meade Ave., at 30th St., police said.The woman was standing outside the store in front of the Redbox video rental machine when the man walked up behind her.Surveillance video shows the man push the woman. She fell to the ground and was injured. There's no word on her condition.The attack appears to be random.Anyone with information about the man is asked to call San Diego Police. 567

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Monday, CVS Pharmacy will begin giving COVID-19 vaccines to staff and residents at California's long term care facilities. On Dec. 18, the first shot was given by a CVS employee at a nursing home in Connecticut."We'll be putting 9,000 vaccinators on the road to give those vaccines across the country," Jonathan Roberts, Vice President of CVS Health, said then.Ten days later, CVS pharmacy will begin its 12-week vaccination program at California's skilled nursing facilities and assisted living centers. The company expects to give the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to around 700,000 people at 15,000 facilities across the state."Retail pharmacies are the foundation of the approach here, both because we are convenient and we're everywhere," Dr. Troy Brennan, Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health, said.Earlier this month, the federal government awarded Walgreens and CVS contracts to roll out the vaccines because of already existing infrastructure and staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years.The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information.The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego politicians are rallying for businesses affected by the county's move to the purple most restrictive tier.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey said the purple tier is taking a toll, hurting businesses that can't withstand another months-long closure.He said it could make or break them and their employees, "many of their employees have been let go now their second or third time as of yesterday and it's really heartbreaking to hear their stories."Bailey said he voiced his concerns on Instagram after learning Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten filed an adjudication request that stated, "San Diego's increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier." The most recent information from the county shows work is the location with the highest transmission rate at 30%. Businesses like restaurants and gyms that are affected by the purple tier restrictions make up about 20% of exposures altogether."So if these businesses are not actually contributing to the spread of COVID based on information from the County Health Officer then why would we be shutting them down in the first place?" Bailey said.Coronavirus cases are higher than they've ever been, at 64,768 as of Sunday.“This is a stark reminder that COVID is real, is spreading and must be taken seriously.
