SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Unified School District has started voluntary COVID-19 testing for students and staff at several elementary schools, under a partnership with UC San Diego Health, it was announced today.The testing initiative is designed to help to keep students and staff safe while expanding in-person learning amid the pandemic. The reopening strategy was developed in collaboration with UCSD infectious disease experts, according to SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten.``The end of the COVID-19 crisis is now in sight with the development and delivery of a safe and effective vaccine, and that has given us all cause to hope,'' Marten said. ``In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to continue operating safely despite the worsening infection rates in our community. That is why testing is essential.''San Diego Unified's testing plan was announced in November, and the Board of Education voted then to authorize an initial million investment in the testing plan, which includes a joint laboratory services testing agreement with UCSD Medical Center. The board will consider ratifying that agreement Tuesday.Eventually, the testing program could be expanded to include all 100,000 students within the district and its more than 10,000 staff members. ``Scientific models from our colleagues at UC San Diego show we can prevent 90% of all transmissions on campus with effective testing every two weeks,'' Marten said. ``That level of protection will not only help us reopen schools; it will help us keep them open, and avoid the back-and-forth, open-and-shut problems that have plagued other school systems.''Free COVID-19 tests will be available to students and staff at 10 district campuses this week -- Rolando Park, Penn, Foster, Gage, Mason, Vista Grande, Dingman, Jerabek, Hearst and Benchley Weinberger elementary schools -- with additional testing to be offered from Jan. 4-15.The goal is to test every student and staff member every two weeks, starting with those on campus for the first phase of school reopening.``The implementation of COVID-19 testing is an important tool for district campuses in identifying and limiting the spread of the coronavirus,'' district physician Dr. Howard Taras said. ``Although voluntary, I strongly urge student and staff participation in the testing program for their health and the health of others.''The campuses were selected based on generally higher local case rates of community infections, combined with student and staff participation rates in appointment-based learning.The tests will be administered in campus auditoriums and multi-purpose rooms by medical professionals from UCSD Health in conjunction with staff members from the district's health office. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of ladies in the North County are part of a nonprofit group that has focused on philanthropic projects for 20 years. Since April, however, six of the women in the group have been on a new mission. "We all go in separate cars and are in a horseshoe line, and someone will ring the doorbell. When the person answers then we're in good shape to sing, ask them how they're doing and tell them we love them and care about them."The group, who call themselves Masquerade Brigade, sing to those who are elderly and vulnerable to COVID-19 on their birthdays. "Just the human connection means a lot to them and it makes them feel like they're not forgotten," said Sophia Bouvier, a member of the singing group.The individuals they sing to are people who they volunteered with before we entered a COVID world."They've texted us after, 'I've been visited by the Masquerade Brigade. You can't believe how uplifting it is to see their faces and listen to their smiles as they sing,'" described Bouvier.Their gift of singing, small gifts, and presence isn't something you can put a price tag on they said, "Kindness is free and it takes so little to make a big difference."The group is out singing every Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., and have visited over 25 people since April. San Diego (KGTV) –  Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer Friday announced the expansion of his successful “Play All Day” initiative, a pledge to break ground on or upgrade 50 parks in five years, by adding an additional 15 parks to neighborhoods across the city.   The program was initially proposed during Mayor Kevin Faulconer's 2016 State of the City address and the initiative is a partnership between the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District, designed to maximize public resources and increase the amount of city park space, especially in urban communities. The parks are used by the school system during the day and remain open to the community after school hours.  720

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 36 students reportedly felt sick at a Bay Terraces elementary school due to possible construction-related fumes, according to the San Diego Fire Department.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to Zamorano Fine Arts Academy around 10:30 a.m. following the reports of students feeling ill. Crews said the kids complained of not feeling well and were being held in the school's cafeteria.An ambulance brought one child to a nearby hospital, SDFD said. Around 11:45 a.m. SDFD began releasing students who were being held in the cafeteria. A nearby construction site was in the process of pouring resin when the smell caused some children to start feeling sick, according to San Diego Unified School District. The resin is non-toxic, but fire crews were called to check out the students. 835
