SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A man was killed after their pickup truck crashed into a brick wall early Wednesday morning.At about 2:56 a.m., a black Dodge Dakota pickup truck veered off of N. Las Posas Road, south of the intersection of Avenida Azul, crashed into a brick wall in the center median, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.SDSO investigators say it's unclear why the vehicle left the roadway.The 68-year-old male driver, who was the only person in the truck, was pronounced deceased at the scene.It's unclear if alcohol or drugs were a factor. 566

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - An abandoned church in San Ysidro will become the site of 10 new affordable housing units, as well as a cultural center.The non-profit group Casa Familiar is spearheading the project, called "Living Rooms at the Border.""What we want to do is build a culture corridor from SY Blvd through the alley, all the way to the Beyer Trolley Station," says Community Development Director David Flores.The church was built in 1927 and is known in the neighborhood as "El Salon." Casa Familiar bought the property in 2000 and has worked to develop it since then.The proposed 14,000 square foot development will turn it into a cultural arts center. Around it, Casa Familiar will build 10 units of affordable housing, a community garden and patio, office space for support services and programs, and walkways connecting the alleys to main streets.Flores says it will connect the community to its past and future."There's history. There's richness. There are stories that families love sharing about San Ysidro and growing up here. It's going to be a space that will bring back a lot of those memories."As part of the plan, the exterior of the church will stay in place. So will much of the filaments inside."People would tell us stories about coming here for Sunday services, or doing their first communion, even weddings, people get married here," says Flores. "It's a really special, cool place, where we thought, why demolish everything. This is a really important community icon that we can restore."The project is the latest effort to revitalize the neighborhood. A new park and playground are just a half block away from the church, and plans are underway to build a new San Ysidro library two blocks away.The new homes will vary in size. There will be three one-bedroom units, three two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units."This is not a lot of units, it's 10 units," says Flores. Michelle Lujan Grisham as the state experiences a spike in coronavirus cases, like most of the country. The relief package, which was approved with bipartisan support, will allocate 4 million in direct unemployment assistance, providing a one-time ,200 check to all types of unemployed workers.Another 0 million will be allocated for a grant program for small businesses in the state, allowing business owners to apply for grants of up to ,000.About million will go to provide emergency housing assistance, million will go to emergency food banks services, and million will be used for direct economic assistance to low-income residents, in the form of a one-time 0 disbursement per qualified household.Legislators says the funding for these programs will be made available through a transfer of previously received federal funds. SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Federal and state agencies spent most of Sunday morning at Truth Aquatics headquarters in Santa Barbara, the company that operated the Conception. Investigators served a search warrant at around 9 a.m. looking for safety, maintenance, and training records for the boat. Agents also took pictures of the company's two other dive boats. The search warrants are considered "pretty standard" as part of the investigation to find out the cause of the fire and if any crimes were committed. The search comes just days after the owner of Truth Aquatics preemptively filed a lawsuit that could limit the payouts to the victim's families.Thirty-four people were killed in the early morning boat fire on Labor Day. One of the victims was identified by family as Nicole Quitasol. Quitasol lived in San Diego. She worked at Nicky Rottens in Coronado. The Santa Barbara Sheriff says the passengers were trapped by the flames. The Conception's captain and four crew members were the only ones to escape.Coast Guard records show the Conception passed it's most recent inspections with zero safety violations. Authorities are looking into how batteries and electronics were stored and charged and what crew members were doing at the time of the fire. All but one of the victim's bodies have been recovered. The search was called off last week due to weather but is expected to resume on Tuesday. The conception is still underwater. 1456
