With millions of Americans getting tested for COVID-19 every single day, some are struggling with long waits for results.But now, researchers say there’s a much easier and faster way to test for the virus, and its right under your nose.“You scratch it, smell it, and then you have a choice of these different windows and you pick which one,” said Derek Toomre, Ph.D., a professor at Yale University School of Medicine.Toomre is part of U-Smell-It, a team that created a scratch-and-sniff app to help determine if someone has COVID-19 all through the sense of smell.“It's going to see how good your sense of smell is and if you do really well, you’ll pass,” Toomre said. “And if you don’t, it will say, ‘hey, you got something up.’”Despite being less accurate than a COVID-19 diagnostic test, this product is much faster and less costly. With results available in less than a minute and the cards costing 50 cents a pop, scientists say this smell app could outperform traditional tests at a fraction of the price.“We’re all familiar with the idea of testing people for fever as a way of finding people who have COVID,” said Roy Parker, Ph.D. a biochemistry professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “But that hasn’t worked very well.”Parker says with only about 20% of people with COVID-19 getting a fever, compared to 80% of people with COVID-19 reporting a loss a smell, a smell test is a much better indicator of COVID-19 infection than a temperature check.“It would make a big difference because you would identify people who have COVID, but they have such mild symptoms that they don’t know it and they’re out walking around potentially infecting other people and their family,” Park said.While commercially available, U-Smell-It is now looking for emergency FDA approval with the goal of getting their scratch-and-sniff cards into people’s hands and under their noses as quick as possible.“I can see people saying, ‘hey, this is not serious,’ and that’s fine, don’t take it serious,” Toomre said. “Let’s just try to do it and see if it works. These sanitizers can kill the novel coronavirus, but doctors warn some can also cause chemical burns and allergic reactions on your skin.“Depending on the strength of these disinfectants, they can cause damage to the skin. They can react like a burn would, which can appear with significant redness or swelling to the skin,” said Dr. Frederick Davis, who works in the emergency department at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center.One Florida family believes their baby got a chemical burn after sitting in a Walmart cart sprayed with disinfectant.Davis said alcohol, bleach and ammonia, often used in commercial sanitizers, can create that reaction.“A lot of these cases, unfortunately, happen because people think it’s a disinfectant, it kills bacteria and viruses, it’s safe to apply to the skin, but it definitely isn’t,” he said.Environmental Biology Professor at the University of Arizona Dr. Charles Gerba said commercial disinfectant can be harmful to skin until it dries completely.“You don’t want to put the child down in the seat if it’s wet with disinfectant,” warned Gerba.Parents should dry carts or any surface covered in disinfectant before letting kids touch them, but experts caution, disinfectants may not work properly if they cannot dry on their own.So, to keep your kids safe and kill the germs, Dr. Gerba recommends placing a towel down in the cart or using a baby wipe to remove harsh chemicals that can build up over time.“That’s one of my concerns,” said Gerba. “You keep adding these chemical disinfectants on every single day, they’re subject to misuse, like not drying enough, so you might get some exposure,” he said.Because of these dangers, Dr. Gerba is experimenting with a replacement for commercial grade sanitizers with a company called Allied Bioscience. It’s a spray coating that sticks to any surface, even touch screens, and kills bacteria and viruses for months at a time.“It’s the same principle as odor eater socks,” said Gerba. “The reason the socks didn’t smell is it killed the bacteria that caused the odors,” he explained.Michael Ruley is the CEO of Allied Bioscience and said he hopes this coating will make its way onto airplanes, into schools and grocery stores soon. “With this coating going down, it gets ahead of the threat and is proactive instead of reactive,” Ruley said.This new technology is still getting approved by the EPA, but studies show it can fight the coronavirus.“They killed the coronavirus pretty well, like 99 percent or more, within a few minutes sometimes,” Gerba said.This product needs to be applied once every 90 days to remain effective, which would lift much of the workload off employees to clean places.“That’s the whole goal is to get people back feeling comfortable in the environment and be able to go out and enjoy their environment,” said Ruley.But until the frequent sanitizing ends, Dr. Gerba warns just because a surface is clean, doesn’t mean it’s safe for you or your kids to touch. What you drive impacts what you breathe.With all kinds of vehicles emitting all kinds of pollutants into our air, many Americans are now suffering from related health problems.“What I feel is tightness all around my chest,” said Karen Jakpor ,M.D., MPH. “Pretend you had to breathe through a straw.”Jakpor lives in California’s Inland Empire, an area east of Los Angeles, that has some of the worst air pollution in the country.After years of breathing in pollutants, Jakpor developed asthma so severe that she lost her clinical career.“That was very devastating to me when that first happened,” she said.Jakpor has since made a career change and is now advocating with the American Lung Association with a goal of getting all internal combustion engines off the road within the next three decades.“There’s so many people who are affected and people dying and yet they don’t even know that air pollution played a role in their medical condition,” Jakpor said.In its new report titled “Road to Clean Air,” the American Lung Association encourages a nationwide shift to electric vehicles by 2050.“Transportation is driving the unhealthy air that affects half of all Americans,” said William Barrett, lead author of this report.He predicts a transition to zero emission technology, for all transportation across America, could save countless lives and billions of dollars.“In the year 2050 alone, we could generate billion worth of public health benefits and approximately 3 billion worth of climate change benefits,” Barrett said.The move to reduce the use of fossil fuels has been an ongoing issue for decades.Now, however, health experts say the need for change is becoming more urgent each day.“Hopefully this report helps move the needle,” said Meredith McCormack, M.D., MHS, associate professor of medicine at John Hopkins University.She says prolonged exposure to car exhaust fumes can cause health issues ranging from heart attacks to lung cancer.To make a national changeover to electric vehicles a reality, McCormack says communities need help from leaders at local, state and federal levels.“For all of us as individuals, we also have our own ability to impact the future,” she said.A future of battery powered cars, however, does come at a cost.For example, a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid costs about ,000 more than a 2020 Toyota Corolla with a four-cylinder engine. But a study by the U.S. Department of Energy found that while plug-in vehicles could cost more upfront, they make up for it in savings with lower fuel costs and reduced emissions.That's something Jakpor believes is a small price to pay to improve America’s air quality.“We don’t want to leave the next generation with even worse disasters,” she said. 2753
