LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - Eleven months of waiting and one month of planning led to the moment that brought everyone in the Mount Vernon Preschool classroom to tears.Private First Class in the Army National Guard Brian Salazar served his first deployment in Qatar. He's a combat engineer based out of National City. His wife Krystal painstakingly planned a reunion in their 4-year-old daughter's classroom, to surprise her. Brian's parents, among other family were inside too.His mother, Maria Salazar, said in Spanish she thought of him every time she went to sleep, every time she ate and wondered if he ate or not, if he was suffering or not, these thoughts constantly ran through her mind."I did have those moments where I really missed him and I'd cry myself to sleep knowing that he wasn't there," Krystal said.Brian was focused on his little girl Annabel, "hopefully she's as excited to see me as I am her," he said minutes before walking through the door. His mom saw him first, letting out a joyful laugh and bursting to tears. It took Annabel a few seconds to realize what was happening, soon as she realized the man in the camouflage uniform was her dad, she ran and jumped over classmates to get to him. They collapsed into a group hug and sobbed with joy.The embrace lasting minutes as they held firmly to him, affirming to themselves he's truly home. The first words came from Annabel. He asked if she missed him and she squeaked out a quiet response echoing his words.The emotion bringing everyone in the classroom to applaud.Annabel showed her dad she made an art project of a soldier who mirrored him. LA JOLLA, Calif., (KGTV)— San Diego beaches were bare this Memorial Day Weekend, and as overcast skies and sprinkles kept people from visiting the usual destination spots. May temperatures should be in the 70s, but highs in La Jolla only reached the low 60s.Mother nature dictated beachwear today at La Jolla Shores. Scarves, hoodies, even fluffy parka jackets were on full display."It is really cold," one woman said. "Whoever said it never rains in Southern California, that song, that was a lie," joked another man. The unofficial first weekend of summer in San Diego was much gloomier than expected. For the Gardner family, that meant a change in plans. "We brought the wetsuits out actually, in case it turned into a beach day, but it looks like it's not," Kelsey Gardner laughed. She and her husband Andrew had their boys, Miles and A.J. fly kites instead. 10News did meet a group of men who were excited to jump into the chilly waters. "I am pursuing diving, and here I am taking my certification. I am excited!" Navy sailor Griffin Leboffe said. He and fellow active duty sailor Brian Mims were heading into the waves with their scuba diving instructor, Harvey Forbes. Forbes said days like today are perfect diving weather. "Ambient temperature is colder when you get in, and that's just the way your body works. It actually feels warmer," Forbes said. Plus, low beach attendance meant more available parking, and better concentration during their certification test. "Here, there are a lot less people, and it's more spread out, so I feel like it would be easier to get out there," Leboffe said. But as the divers were heading in, most everyone else was heading out. LA MESA (KGTV)— Meteorologists are predicting a wet Christmas week in San Diego. 10News revisited residents at the San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa that dealt with a Thanksgiving flood to see if they are prepared for the next set of thunderstorms. Taylor Jaime showed 10News around the RV resort. "She [My mother] was cooking a turkey at my sister's house for Thanksgiving," Jaime remembered. She said she never got to enjoy that turkey after her home got washed away. Jaime and her family live at the San Diego RV Resort full-time. On Thanksgiving day, heavy rains inundated the ravine that runs parallel to the resort. "So the water started coming over this [the wall]," Jaime motioned. The retaining wall collapsed and the water came up waist-high, destroying two of her cars, their 40-foot trailer and everything inside. Unfortunately, their the new RV was insured at the time of the storm. "The water was so nasty. There was crab, there was fish in the trailer," Jaime remembered. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the RV resort is right in the middle of a heavy flood zone. The resort staff told 10News they just finished rebuilding the wall Saturday. In the last month, Jaime said she saw Caltrans and California Conservation Corps workers clean up some of the debris, but she fears another collapse. "The water won't be able to go through. It'll get stuck down there, like last time," pointing at the west end of the resort lot.With heavy rains forecasted during Christmas week, some of Jaime's neighbors have already lined sandbags along their lots. Lucky for Jaime and her family, they have a spare trailer, albeit an older and smaller one. They parked it away from the ravine and closer to the entrance gate. Six people and several small animals are now crammed inside the trailer. They didn't skimp on holiday decorations, though."We are still in the spirit," Jaime said. "It's not going to bring us down. We are still a family. We still have each other. And that's what matters the most."10News reached out to San Diego RV Resort's parent company for comment to see if they are making other preparations ahead of the storm. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested after deputies say she assaulted the vice principal of her son’s school in Lakeside Tuesday. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says the incident started when Monique Martin tried to pick up her son from school. When Martin was asked for identification, deputies say she became combative and physically assaulted the vice principal of Lakeside Middle School before returning home.
