Gavin Newsom asking that Craig Peyer remain behind bars.In December 1986, Peyer -- then a California Highway Patrol officer -- pulled over Knott on Interstate 15 in the Rancho Penasquitos area. Peyer beat Knott, strangled her, and threw her body over a bridge.Peyer was eventually convicted of killing the 20-year-old San Diego State student in 1988.Peyer's next parole hearing isn't until 2027, but in their letter to the governor, Knott's family says they've learned inmates are being released from Peyer's prison because of COVID-19.“This is precisely NOT a person who deserves to be released early from prison for humanitarian reasons. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 related hospitalizations continue to sure across California.Without any intervention, Gov. Gavin Newsom said current projections show hospitalizations could increase two to three times the current amount in just one month.“We’ve seen a significant increase, 89 percent increase over the 14-day period of people who have been hospitalized that have tested positive for COVID-19,” Newsom said during a press briefing Monday.Hospitalizations are rising in San Diego County, with local hospitals seeing more COVID-19 cases than they ever have.“We’re seeing about three times the number that we saw just a couple of months ago,” said Dr. Omar Khawaja, the Chief Medical Officer for Palomar Health. “About 25 percent of the positive patients are ending up in the ICU; that’s less than we saw during the first spike.”Khawaja said he expects more hospitalizations in the coming weeks as COVID-19 cases related to Thanksgiving gatherings start to show up.In Escondido, Palomar Medical Center has had room to handle more COVID-19 patients from other hospitals for several months now. A federal medical station is set up inside the hospital with 202 beds that haven’t been used yet.Khawaja said they’re now ready to take on patients from other hospitals across the county that become overwhelmed, but the set-up is not meant for ICU patients.“It could be beds that we would be offload some of the less sick patients from other systems into there so they can handle the sicker patients; we don’t have a solid plan for it yet,” he said. “I don’t think it’ll be activated in the next week; it may be three or four weeks out, so we’re planning for that now.”Khawaja said the details are actively being discussed with other medical officers across the county.“The county and hospital systems are all working very well together, collaborating, communicating on at least a weekly basis. We are actively discussing right now, what would it look like, how would we open it, and what type of patients would go into there,” he said. “Are we worried? Absolutely. Is the spike coming very quickly? Yes, but we do have some capacity and redundancy available now, and we are planning to have even more."Creating more capacity could include scaling back on the number of elective surgeries scheduled, but this time Khawaja said it would look much different than what we saw months ago.“What we’ve done is essentially looked at surgeries and classified them in terms of how long can this be put off to be safe, we all saw that JUST shutting everything down just let to really, just poor patient care, and we don’t want to do that again.” 2646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say the man shot and killed on Friday night by a Border Patrol agent behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall was trying to enter the U.S. illegally.A statement from Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector reads:“On Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a United States Border Patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States immediately west of the port of entry in San Ysidro, California. During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm, wounding the man, who was later identified as an adult Mexican national. Nearby agents and law enforcement personnel responded immediately and initiated lifesaving efforts until emergency medical services arrived. At approximately 6:25 p.m. the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is currently being led by the San Diego Police Department. Customs and Border Protection will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The specifics of this incident have also been shared with FBI, DHS OIG and CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. Additional updates will be provided by the San Diego Police Department, inquiries should be directed to them.”SDPD added Saturday that the 30-year-old man was shot once in the torso by the agent after he fought the agent, who sustained minor injuries.Social justice leaders with the American Friends Service Committee and Alliance San Diego have sent a letter to SDPD calling in part for an independent investigation to be handled only by police, not border officials or unions. Part of the letter reads, “Any involvement or coordination with these agencies, and specifically with CIIT has the potential to corrupt the investigation and could be considered an obstruction of justice.”Pedro Rios with the American Friends Service Committee said that he and others are considering holding a demonstration on Sunday. “I think for us it's important to ensure that people are treated with dignity regardless of who they are and we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the person who is now a victim and is now deceased,” Rios told ABC 10News on Saturday. He added, “I think we should permit the investigation — an unobstructed investigation — to move forward and that way we get to know exactly what took place that led to the demise of this individual.”There's now a call for evidence related to the shooting to be released right away. “We know that there's a lot of surveillance cameras in the area, not only belonging to Customs and Border Protection and [the] Department of Homeland Security but also the Las Americas mall has a lot of cameras in the area,” said Rios.Officials are not releasing the name of the man who was shot or the name of the agent who fired at him. 2848
