SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fired a pellet gun at Navy SEAL instructors and trainees conducting a nighttime training exercise near Liberty Station was sentenced on Thursday to a year in jail.Scott Douglass Weaver, 48, pleaded guilty last month to making an attempted threat on a witness and brandishing a replica firearm.Because of credit for time already served, Weaver will spend about 80 more days in local custody before being released, authorities said.Dispatchers received a report of a man shooting at Navy officers shortly before 10:45 p.m. on July 23 in the 2500 block of Laning Road and Weaver was arrested. The project's kick-off ceremony will include a name dedication for its community funders and a 17-feet-tall banner unraveled from the building's top balcony, reading "Hope Lives Here."The city of San Diego plans to open a similar facility nearby in the Egger Highlands area by refitting a Super 8 motel that was the site of regular drug use and prostitution. The facility will include 82 beds and counseling for low-level drug offenders, many of whom are currently homeless. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Attempted murder, kidnapping, child abuse, child abduction, criminal threats and burglary charges have been filed against a man accused of intentionally driving a pickup truck off Sunset Cliffs and into the ocean with his twin toddler daughters inside, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced Friday.Robert Brians is being held without bail on suspicion of driving into the water last Saturday morning with his 2-year-old daughters inside the truck. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego federal judge has again denied a Chula Vista church's request to challenge the state's COVID-19-related restrictions on indoor worship services.South Bay United Pentecostal Church, which lost a challenge to the restrictions earlier this year when the case went before the U.S. Supreme Court, filed an amended complaint this summer in its ongoing lawsuit arguing that California's restrictions on indoor services and singing are unconstitutional.U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant, who denied the church's request for a preliminary injunction in May, also denied South Bay United's latest request in a written order signed Wednesday.Bashant echoed much of her previous reasoning in denying the church's request, though South Bay United's latest complaint and her ruling took into account the shifting state of the virus locally.South Bay United argued in court papers that the state's "scientific pronouncements" are "largely baseless," as by "all reasonable scientific measurements," the COVID-19 health emergency "has ended."Bashant disagreed with the church's assessment of the current picture, and wrote that limitations to indoor worship attendance do not restrict one's ability to attend religious gatherings, as long as they are held outdoors.The judge wrote that the current COVID-19 situation in San Diego County holds that worship services may be held outdoors, with singing and chanting permitted.
