She lived through 21 presidencies. I was born in 1949, in a colored hospital, during legal segregation. I desegregated a school in Missouri and a school in California. I have lived through 13 Presidencies. As I think about the election, I am moved to share words of wisdom from my Great Aunt Kate and Myself, the things that she taught me and the things that I have learned.1. 4 Years “This too shall pass.”Whatever the outcome of the election, whichever candidate wins, they only have 4 years to influence what happens in the United States and the World.2. We the People “No one can stop you from being anything you want to be or doing anything you want to do but you.”We can be a government of all people, by all people and for all people when we exercise our voice beyond voting day.3. Treat All People With Respect “How you treat people speaks volumes about who you are and nothing about who they are.”Whether you are happy about the outcome or not, let us be an example of what you want to see in the world. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A new study shows that young adults are seeing a spike in deaths from liver disease related to binge drinking. It's especially dangerous in California, where high alcohol content drinks are popular.The study, published this month in the British Medical Journal, says that the number of 25- to 34-year-olds who died annually from alcohol-related liver disease nearly tripled between 1999 and 2016, from 259 in 1999 to 767 in 2016, an average annual increase of around 10 percent.It cites binge drinking as a leading cause, because of rising rates of alcohol consumption between 2002 and 2012.It's especially bad in California, which the study says was among the top five states for those types of deaths.Local experts say the kind of alcohol we drink may be to blame, as craft beers tend to have higher concentrations of alcohol."If someone was having highly concentrated alcohol, then they're consuming more drinks per hour," says Dr. Rohit Loomba, with the UC San Diego Health Liver Center. "That will have detrimental effects on the liver, for sure."The CDC recommends no more than 1-2 drinks per day for "moderate" drinking. Binge drinking is defined as 4 or more drinks over 4-6 hours. Loomba says you may hit the "binge" point in fewer drinks if what you're having is stronger.For example, a Bud Light has just 4.2% alcohol by volume. Craft beers often have 6% or higher, so one craft beer may be as much as 2 or 3 other drinks."That quantity of alcohol intake over years definitely will contribute to higher risk for liver disease," says Loomba.He says people should ask themselves four questions to determine if they are drinking too much:1. Have you ever cut down on drinking? 2. Would you be annoyed if somebody asked you to cut down on drinking? 3. Do you feel guilty after drinking excessively over a weekend? 4. Do you need an "eye-opener" in the morning to get to work?Dr. Loomba says if you answered "yes" to 2 or more of these questions, you should talk to your doctor to discuss treatment.He also says obesity combined with alcohol can lead to more severe liver problems and even death. People with diabetes or who are overweight multiply their risk of the disease."If you're obese, you not only should restrict your alcohol, but you should try to lose some weight as well," says Loomba.The study says the financial crisis may have led to more binge drinking in the past decade, as young adults turned to alcohol to cope with financial stress. Researchers found the rise in alcohol-related deaths overlaps with rising rates of binge drinking from 2002 to 2012 observed across much of the U.S.The good news, according to the study, is that many liver diseases are preventable and reversible."Once you stop alcohol use, you can reverse complications related to it in the majority of cases," says Dr. Loomba. 2882

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Christmas morning, more than 700 families drove through a toy and food distribution at the Jacobs Center on Euclid Avenue in San Diego. Families were given boxes of food from the San Diego Food Bank, plus every child was able to get out of their car to receive at least three wrapped gifts. There were also free gift cards available.“My little one smiled. He was so happy,” said Elsa Sarabia, a mom of five who drove through.Sarabia said she works as a chef, and both she and her husband have lost hours at work this year. This event meant more gifts for her children that she might not have otherwise been able to afford.“We don’t have a lot of money to buy stuff for the kids and we appreciate everything you do for us,” she said, thanking the organizers.This is the fourth time this event was held. It’s hosted by Shane Harris and the People’s Alliance for Justice, with support from Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and the San Diego Lifeguards.The event had to adapt this year to be safe due to coronavirus, but Harris said they knew they had to make those changes to continue to fill this need. The breakfast would usually take place in a big hall, but organizers designed a drive-through format for 2020.“Really just trying to make sure the needs of the community are met particularly at a time where COVID-19 has made it really difficult for a lot of families economically,” said Harris.One volunteer was dancing through the whole morning as she distributed food, saying she was glad to give up her Christmas morning if it meant helping those in her community who needed it this year."A lot of these people do appear to be in great need. COVID has hit people that I’m sure never expected to be in this position," said volunteer Sharon Klatt, taking a pause from yelling 'Merry Christmas!' to everyone driving through. 1853

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Residents in a South San Diego Apartment complex worked together to fight a fire that started in the patio.At around 10:45 Sunday morning, San Diego City Fire Rescue teams responded to the 1700 block of Oro Vista Road. Heavy smoke was billowing from the patio of a downstairs apartment. "I called 911 automatically, and that's when the person who lives upstairs came running out,” Alexa Delgado said.Delgado had just arrived at the Oro Vista Villas to visit her mother when she saw the flames. "It started popping, and the fire started coming out,” she said. It was in that moment of chaos that she found herself and several neighbors step up to help. One neighbor pulled the smoke alarm, others smashed fire extinguisher boxes and started spraying down the patio, and she protected the neighbor's pet birds, all before the fire department arrived. Engine 30’s Fire Captain, John Wilson said what the residents did in the first minutes of the fire helped suppress the flames. "There was an alarm that was going off upon our arrival, so the smoke detectors did their jobs and got everyone out safely,” Captain Wilson said. Delgado says what happened today was a true testament to the word “community.”“A bunch of neighbors helping and asking if anyone living there, went upstairs to see if anyone was in there and helping out."Fire investigators are still looking into what exactly caused the patio fire.  No one was inside the home when the flames ignited. San Diego (KGTV)- The San Diego Police Department will soon be adding 63 new officers on our streets. The department held the orientation for its 120th police academy this morning. This academy class is the largest class in over 25 years.“It’s very exciting,” says recruit Samantha Koegel. “I’m really excited to start this new journey of my life.”Koegel says her interest in the police force started began as a senior in high school after participating in a ride-along with an SDPD officer. Koegel graduated from Ramona High School. She received her degree from The University of Nevada- Reno, in Criminal Justice. All recruits went through an extensive screening process before being invited to the academy. “This is probably within 5 to 7 percent of all the applicants that we’ve gotten,” says Lt. Steve Waldheim. In the past, the San Diego Police Department has been understaffed. They currently have 1,800 officers but are budgeted for over 2,000. Lt. Waldheim says they the department needs more officers on the streets.“We need more officers in patrol so that they are out answering radio calls that can lower our response times.”The average salary for a San Diego Police recruit is ,000. After they become an officer, that number jumps to around ,000. “The salary now with SDPD, at the end of these pay raises that city council approved, we will be on par with the rest of the agencies around San Diego County,” says Lt.
