CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Two San Diego County congressmen called on United Technologies Corp. Monday to reconsider plans to lay off roughly 300 employees at the company's Chula Vista manufacturing plant as it looks toward shuttering the facility entirely.Reps. Juan Vargas, D-Chula Vista, and Scott Peters, D-San Diego, joined California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris to push back against the layoffs. Vargas and Peters also requested that the company answer a list of questions about how UTC decided to shutter the plant and how involved the machinists union was in the discussion.UTC notified workers in July of the company's plan to close the factory by 2020."We understand that complex domestic and international markets factor into these difficult decisions; however, we note that UTC's company website says it creates products for one of the ‘fastest growing industries on the planet,"' Vargas and Peters said in a letter to UTC Aerospace Systems President David Gitlin. "This robust characterization of the industry seems to conflict with the decision to eliminate hundreds of production jobs."UTC's plant in Chula Vista has operated since 1940 and produces engine pods and mounts for aerospace companies like Boeing and Airbus. The union representing the workers charges UTC with moving its manufacturing plants to Mexico to take advantage of cheaper wages."We hope UTC reconsiders its decision to shut down its manufacturing facility in Chula Vista," said Robert Martinez Jr., president of the International Association of Machinists. "Generations of IAM members have made this facility successful. The work being done at UTC's facility in Mexico is work that should be done in Chula Vista. We applaud Sens. (KGTV) — New businesses are set to call the Otay Ranch Town Center home in the coming months. Just a few months ago, the mall had more than a dozen empty storefronts and employees at the mall called it a ghost town. The new businesses moving in include Novo Brazil Brewing, Planet Fitness, and Barons Market.LONGFORM: Vacant storefronts reflect mall struggles at Otay Ranch Town CenterBrookfield Property Partners took over full ownership of the mall six weeks ago. It was a part of a larger merger across the country. The mall's general manager, Steven Sayers, sat down with 10News."Nothing was going wrong with the property at all. It was just, some of it was just timing with expiring leases and unfortunately, some tenants just left," says Sayers.Sayers says these new businesses were already in the works before the merger. (KGTV) -- The mother of a South Bay teen says her 16-year-old son had a disturbing encounter at a store parking lot in Eastlake.Suher Haidar said a man offered her son money for a sexual act as her son was leaving the Walmart on Eastlake Parkway on Monday."It's just gross," Haidar said. "That's the only way I can explain it."She said her son was walking to his car in the store parking lot when a man in a pickup truck waved him down to get his attention. He was trying to make small talk when the conversation shifted to the disturbing proposition. That's when her son pulled out his phone and recorded the encounter. The man drove away after her son began yelling at him and recording him."My son was just disgusted, and he did what he had to do," Haidar said. "His father and I are really proud of him for standing up for himself and being quick to pull out his phone."She posted her son's video on social media, and several people have commented to say the same person tried to start a conversation with their teenage sons.The Chula Vista Police Department says they are investigating the incident. (KGTV) - Two Chula Vista parks closed Thursday due to the threat of falling trees and saturated ground amid a cold winter storm.The City of Chula Vista tweeted the closures about 3 p.m. Thursday.Hilltop Park, 780 Hilltop Drive, and Eucalyptus Park, 436 C Street, are located between I-5 and I-805 in the western half of the city. They will be shut down until crews can remove the trees, city officials said.The ground "is too saturated to access" the trees, according to the City of Chula Vista.All sports fields at both parks were also closed. 572

CINCINNATI -- Kroger Co. has joined Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart in tightening its policy on gun sales after a school shooting killed 17 in Parkland, Florida. The Wall Street Journal reports the Cincinnati-based grocery chain will stop selling guns to anybody under 21 at 43 Fred Meyer locations, mostly located in western states."Recent events demonstrate the need for additional action on the part of responsible gun retailers," the company wrote in a statement to CNBC.
