SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting outside an El Cerrito smoke shop, police said Monday.The shooting happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sunday outside Aztec Smoke Shop, in a strip mall near the corner of 60th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim, a 22-year-old man, was confronted by two men as he was getting into his car after exiting the smoke shop, Buttle said.The two men shot the victim four times, then fled the scene eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard in a gray VW Jetta, the officer said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to his chest and leg, Buttle said, adding that the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.Both suspects were described as 5-foot-11 Black men in their early 20s with thin builds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a fleeing detainee outside the downtown San Diego jail pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a second-degree murder charge.Aaron Russell, 23, is charged in the May 1 death of 36-year-old Nicholas Bils, who was unarmed and running away from officers when he was shot just outside the San Diego Central Jail, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.The former deputy, who had been with the department for 18 months at the time of the shooting, surrendered to authorities on Monday, according to his attorney, Richard Pinckard.Russell, who resigned from the sheriff's department shortly after the shooting, faces 15 years to life in state prison if convicted of second-degree murder, and up to an additional 10 years if convicted of a firearm allegation.RELATED: Suspect who escaped park rangers' vehicle shot, killed by deputyBils had been arrested by rangers with the California Department of Parks and Recreation for allegedly threatening a ranger with a golf club at Old Town San Diego State Park. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former biologist at the San Diego Zoo was sentenced Wednesday to six months in federal prison for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars by cashing payments for false invoices he created.Matthew John Anderson, 50, of Ramona, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a theft charge for taking more than 6,000 from the zoo over the course of eight years. The U.S. Attorney's Office said that as a citizen of the United Kingdom, Anderson will likely face deportation once his sentence is completed.He has paid the full restitution amount back to the zoo, the U.S. Attorney's Office said."For years, this defendant took advantage of the trust of one of our city's most beloved institutions," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "His theft compromised the San Diego Zoo's world-renowned conservation work, made possible by government grants, charitable donations and the work of thousands of unpaid volunteers."Prosecutors said Anderson created dozens of fake invoices -- often using the name of fictitious vendors -- then submitted the invoices to the zoo for payment for products that were never purchased or received. Additionally, he submitted invoices for his personal expenses.The zoo sent payments to accounts he controlled or to other third parties, who sent the bulk of the payments to Anderson, prosecutors said.Anderson worked at the zoo for more than 17 years and served as the director of behavioral biology for the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.
