With the amount of people out of work, the kids that aren’t gonna have a great Christmas, and this is free, isn’t going to cost them anything," Hoshier said as he watched people walk up and down the block admiring the lights.Turns out Hoshier isn't alone in his love for light. Sales of Christmas lights are up nearly 20 percent nationwide in 2020."With the way everyone is hunkered down in their houses, it puts a little joy on kids' faces,” Hoshier said. “You only have to put one string of lights up, you don’t have to go crazy as we do.”But the holidays aside, there might be something much deeper at play when it comes to Americans’ newfound fascination with Christmas lights this year. In a year defined by darkness, psychology professor Dr. Krystine Batcho sees a reason behind those skyrocketing light sales."Holidays themselves are wonderful social or community markers for time. It reminds us that there’s a cycle to nature, the seasons' cycle," said Dr. Batcho, who teaches at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York.With so many of our routines upended, putting up lights can be a marker in time. Now, more people are turning to surgery centers for a lower cost.Sandi Bowen is one of those people.Something as simple as picking out a shirt is more challenging for Bowen than she ever thought it'd be. On Easter, she found a lump in her breast. Doctors told her it was cancer."It was very very very confusing," Bowen says. "It still is. It brings tears to my eyes, because I don't understand how I got it."Instead of a lumpectomy, she decided to remove her entire breast. And instead of going to a hospital for breast reconstruction, Bowen opted for the Kaiser Permanente Ambulatory Surgery Center, where she got the surgery. In less than 24 hours, she was back home recovering.  "I felt very special," Bowen says. "They were there every time I moved. They came in and talked to me, even goofed around with me."Dr. Mike Sawyer, the director at the center, says they've worked hard to address concerns regarding patient care."If it's a patient that just needs physicians to kind of come to the bedside, and maybe we have to have some kind of intervention, we're able to do that because are here and we are present," Dr. Sawyer says. "On site, as they say. If it's really something that requires a higher level of care, that again allows us to do a pretty quick transfer process over to one of our partner hospitals."Compared with hospitals, Kaiser Permanente says its patients are seeing an average cost savings of 30 percent on their procedures. It can be anything from simple orthopedic procedure to joint procedures.However, Dr. Sawyer says there are important questions you need to ask before determining if a surgery center is the best option for you."Does your physician feel comfortable with this operation there?" Dr. Sawyer says. "Have you and your physician discussed all the ramifications of that procedure? (KGTV) - Someone posted a threat against Mar Vista Academy in Imperial Beach on social media, said San Diego Police Monday.The threat was posted on an Instagram account, police said. Officers did not elaborate on the nature of the threat.According to Sweetwater Union High School District spokesman Manuel Rubio, no children were on campus when the threat was reported.Mar Vista Academy is currently a secure campus, Rubio added, saying there are no plans to increase security on campus Tuesday. 526

In a move that reminded some people of road trips with their parents, a Delta flight turned around and went back to the gate because passengers were not complying with crew instructions.In a statement from Delta Airlines, Flight 1227 from Detroit to Atlanta on July 23 “returned to the gate following two customers who were non-compliant” with the airline's mask policy.The plane had pulled away from the gate and was still on the ground when it turned around. Delta says crew members asked the two passengers to wear a mask, and they did not.At the gate, the two passengers who did not wear a face covering were removed from the flight.
