SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - The FBI joined the case of a part-time San Diego resident and tourist found murdered on vacation in the Caribbean in October.Rick Kuhnla says his family was told Monday morning that the FBI entered into an agreement for a joint investigation into the murder of his mother Marie Kuhnla, 62.Nearly two months later, the grief is still raw."At work, I will be going through the day sometimes and it will hit me: I'm not going to see my mom again. It's almost like a panic. It's horrible," said Rick Kuhnla.In mid-October, Marie Kuhnla set off on a girls trip to a Club Med resort in Turks and Caicos with two friends and fellow public defenders in New York. A few days into their trip, Marie went to her room to take a nap and wasn't heard from again. Her body was discovered in bushes on the edge of the resort days later. Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police told her family she was strangled, but Kuhnla says they've relayed to them little else."We haven't been given an autopsy report ... that was completed two weeks after her body was discovered. We don't know the time of death," said Kuhnla.Also upsetting for Kuhnla: it took 34 days to ship her body back, despite initial promises it would only be a few days."Because of how it was embalmed, it decayed a lot," said Kuhnla.That prevented family from have their own autopsy conducted and even viewing her body."It was heartbreaking and feeling disrespected ... makes me feel distrusting of the investigation," said Kuhnla.Kuhnla said his family has had concerns from the beginning. He says on the first night his mother's friends noticed her missing, police declined to search because it was dark out. According to Kuhnla, his family is now more hopeful with the FBI joining the probe. "I feel good about the FBI's involvement. I just want answers. She spent her life fighting for justice for those who couldn't afford it themselves. She deserves every effort to be made to get justice for her," said Kuhnla.In a statement, a Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police spokesperson says the family has been given "updates regarding all relevant information" but declined to comment further. 10News also reached out to the FBI but haven't heard back. 2236

SPRING VALLEY (KGTV) -- An hours-long SWAT standoff came to an end Thursday evening in Spring Valley. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began around 1:30 on the 10700 block of Jamacha Boulevard. Deputies tried to serve the man with a warrant when he barricaded himself inside his home. The man was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m., the department says. Several nearby mobile homes were evacuated during the standoff. It's unclear at this time what the suspect was wanted for. 522

Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who previously said she would not vote to confirm any nominee to fill the Supreme Court vacancy prior to the 2020 presidential election, said on Saturday that she would vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett.Murkowski was one of only two Republican senators who expressed any hesitancy in confirming Barrett to the Supreme Court. Because the Republican caucus holds a 53-47 voting edge in the Senate, Barrett's nomination would have likely passed without Murkowski's support.Earlier on Saturday, Murkowski voted no on procedural votes required prior to Monday's planned full Senate vote on Barrett's confirmation on Monday. In a speech on the floor of the Senate, Murkowski said she was opposed to the process, not the judge."While I oppose the process that has led us to this point, I do not hold it against her as an individual who has navigated the gauntlet with grace, skill and humility," Murkowski said, according to CBS.Since the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September, Murkowski has opposed filling her seat until after the election.“I’ve shared for a while that I didn’t think we should be taking this up until after the election, and I haven’t changed,” she told Politico on Thursday.In 2016, the Republican-controlled Senate blocked then-President Barack Obama's nominee to fill a Supreme Court seat vacated by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia for more than seven months, saying it was too close to a presidential election and that the American people should decide who should fill the seat.Sen. Some of the top scientists and doctors in the country are calling on leaders to do something different immediately to improve the state of the COVID-19 pandemic.The American Association of Medical Colleges released a road map to reset the country's approach to the crisis. It includes evidence-based actions to improve outcomes and overall health.Improvements include things the country still hasn't got a grip on, like critical supply and drug shortages, increasing testing, an setting national standards for face coverings.“There is literally no risk to wearing a mask for the average person. You may be uncomfortable, you may be hot, you may break out, but it is nowhere as uncomfortable as it would be for having me or one of my colleagues intubate you and put you on a ventilator for an extended period of time,” said Dr. Atul Grover, Executive Director at the AAMC Research and Action Institute.A recent study by Duke of various face masks found the N95 respirator with no valve is the most effective. Small businesses employ roughly half of all Americans, but new data is showing many of these businesses are closing permanently.“It’s an excruciatingly hard decision,” said Martha Studstill. “You know small business owners put their heart and soul into their business.”For more than a decade Studstill has owned a small gift shop, Uptown Gifts, in South Carolina.“Until COVID came along we were buzzing,” said Studstill.Originally, in March, the plan for Uptown Gifts was to close temporarily for a few weeks. However, the shop has now been closed for more than three months. She has only been able to list items online, resulting in sales being down by 75%.However, sales aside and more importantly to Studstill, the danger of COVID-19, especially for someone her age, hasn’t subsided.“When we closed on March the 16, I really had no idea we would be where we are at today,” said Studstill.Studstill thought she would be reopening, not only earlier, but to fewer cases of COVID-19.Cases have actually been on the rise in her state. The uptick started most distinctly after reopenings. So, with the financial risk and uncertainty added to Studstill’s health risk of running the shop, she feels closing is her only choice.“I think if I were younger, I would not have made the same decision, but I am where I am at,” she added.Around the country, there is a wave of permanent business closures happening. One report done by Yelp shows more than 143,000 businesses listed on its platform closed between March and June. Now, roughly 35% of those businesses have indicated their closures are permanent. Most of those businesses closing are small businesses.“The numbers that are coming out are really sad,” said Frank Knapp with Small Business for America’s Future.Knapp heads the newly formed organization, pushing for better help for small businesses in Congress’ next stimulus package.“Our proposal for Small Business for America’s Future is that we need to put together grants for the really small businesses to help them get through this recession so that they are healthy on the other side and our economy can get back up and running again,” said Knapp.Saving small businesses could save jobs and be the fastest way to rebound the economy.“Small businesses hire about 50% of all workers in this country,” said Knapp, “We know from the last recession, it was small businesses that got us back on our economic feet again, not big businesses.
