(CNS) -- Orange County Jail inmates suing the county for a variety of issues related to their housing filed a motion Thursday demanding an improvement in their meals, a resumption of visits and access to religious services, all of which have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.Orange County Jail inmates recently conducted a short-lived hunger strike as they demanded a resumption of hot meals, which were restored for a short time at some jails."Presently, most prisoners except those in Theo Lacy, get soybean mystery meat (baloney) sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner," the motion reads."This food is inedible and must be supplemented with snacks from the commissary. Those who cannot afford snacks go hungry."A GoFundMe campaign is raising money for inmates to buy snacks from the commissary, according to the motion.The litigation also alleges that inmates are receiving the wrong Jewish diets, including sandwiches during Passover when they are not allowed to eat bread.Visits from family have been suspended since March and the inmates demand that something to be done to provide some sort of visits that could be done under the state's social distancing guidelines.The litigation also complains of a restriction on religious visits or services.Inmate Kendall Cole, who has been in custody since 2016, said in a declaration said he used to receive Kosher meals, "but I am now served 'Halal' meals. That is a different religious diet. I am Jewish and need Kosher meals."Cole said he recently testified that jail guards gave him a weapon and was instructed to attack Joshua Waring, the son of a former "Real Housewives of Orange County" cast member, who recently was released from jail following a plea deal for attempted murder.Cole said he was sentenced to 15 days "in the hole" in connection with the attack and that legal materials he received through the law library were "confiscated" along with his "religious head covering (Kippah) and my Jewish calendar."Cole said he was "housed with Joshua Waring when the guards shot a pepper ball into our room. This caused choking and tearing to the dozen or so prisoners even though we were in our housing units. The guards threatened us and told us not to say anything to the investigators. We did not say anything because we feared these threats. We all know of the subsequent attacks on Joshua Waring."Waring is a plaintiff in the litigation.The Orange County Sheriff's Department issued this statement regarding the allegations:"Since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the sheriff's department has worked closely with the Board of State and Community Corrections and the Orange County Health Care Agency to meet all health and safety guidelines for inmates and staff, as required by law. SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) -- Local businesses are feeling a one-two punch after the border closure for non-essential travel was extended during the coronavirus pandemic.The owner of El Rincon Restaurant in San Ysidro said the extension is devastating for business."I just found out a couple hours ago that they were going to do this, I had absolutely no clue," Owner Edgar Alaniz said. He was looking forward to the reopening of the border planned for June 22, now pushed back for a third time to July 21.Alaniz said he didn't want to be mad because all of this is to protect our health and safety but it's extremely difficult for businesses to survive after being closed for three months. Alaniz said about 75-80% of their customers come from Mexico. Currently, the business is only seeing about 20% of those customers. "That's what happens when the border is closed for three months, people find different ways and for a restaurant like me, they find a different restaurant," he said.He hopes when the border reopens to welcome them back.Alaniz said they closed the restaurant March 15, and continued with take-out service. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Marcos Unified School District teachers and parents flooded the school board meeting Tuesday night asking for the board to come to a contract agreement with their union. The meeting was standing room only. Union officials say they've been without a contract since last June and that they've tried to negotiate with the district. They're fighting for higher pay and smaller class sizes and getting all of these things in writing. There was no item on the agenda at Tuesday's meeting but the superintendent did address the teachers and parents directly during a presentation. Dr. Garcia told the crowd she hears them and appreciates them being present at the meeting but told them the issue with the union's request is a lack of adequate funding at the state level. SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- A surfer was found dead face down in the water at Upper Trestles at San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County.The Orange County Register reports South Sector Superintendent for State Parks Rich Haydon says the man, described as middle age, was seen struggling Saturday as he paddled out into the surf at the break just south of San Clemente's border.It's unclear if the man was struggling because of the surf conditions or because of health issues.Nearby surfers then noticed the man face down in the water.Camp Pendleton Fire Department responded and continued attempting CPR before declaring the man dead at the scene.The San Diego County Medical Examiner had not released the man's name as of Monday morning. 746
