BALTIMORE, Maryland — In the early hours of Jan. 19, 2015, the 15-foot Christmas tree proudly displayed in the Great Room of a large Annapolis, Maryland mansion caught fire.It spread through the home killing Sher Grogg's brother, sister-in-law, and their four young grandchildren.“They just didn’t have enough time to do anything, and it was under three minutes and everything was gone,” Grogg said. It's painful for her to talk about, even more distressing to see rooms engulfed in flames, but as an advocate for Common Voices, a coalition whose mission is a fire safe America, she witnesses fire demonstrations.“Oh, it’s horrible. And actually, really horrifying for me to see because I know my brother was right in the middle of a room that had flashover and that was his last experience,” said Grogg. This is her outlet to grieve. She's found purpose in educating and warning others. Had her brother’s home had fire sprinklers, she thinks her family would still be here today.“You can replace material things, but you can't replace a life and that's the difference. You really need to consider fire sprinklers to save the lives of your family,” said Grogg.Shane Ray is the president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association. He’s been in the fire service since 1984 and has seen how smoke detectors alone are not enough to prevent deaths.“We have more contents in our home than we've ever had before and most of those contents are made out of synthetic materials, so it produces a much more toxic smoke, much faster and much more deadly,” Ray said.On Thursday, he demonstrated how quickly a fire spreads. Within a minute, flames and smoke engulfed a tiny room. The smoke alarm sounded then the sprinklers went off. In a side-by-side comparison, the same room, without sprinklers, is completely destroyed by the fire.Ray said the sprinklers give families time to evacuate, buy firefighters time to get to the incident, and can save the lives of our pets.“Ninety-six percent of fires are contained with just one sprinkler. This is the sprinkler that came out of that fire. So, if we had another 10 rooms in the house, this is the only sprinkler that would activate. It's not tied to the smoke alarm, it's not tied to anything else, it's individually heat-activated,” said Ray, attempting to dispel some myths surrounding sprinklers. The heat in a room must reach 155 degrees before the bulb in the sprinkler shatters, releasing water. Burnt toast or cigar smoke will not set off fire sprinklers.According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 2,500 people die in home fires each year. Sprinklers decrease the risk of dying in a house fire by 80 percent.Grogg also wants to remind people with this upcoming holiday season to water your tree every day, get rid of it right after the holiday, and unplug your tree every night.National Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 13. BALTIMORE, Maryland — Tommie Tarsell, an experienced insurance agent with 40 plus years in the business, has spent months job hunting.“You would think with all the credentials I have the CIC, CFP LUTC, all these,” said Tarsell. She even owned an agency at one point.“But two years ago, my health failed and I merged with a different agency, which is literally me selling my business,” Tarsell said. She still has bills to pay, so when she was contacted about a job opportunity, she jumped at it.“So up out of the blue came this email to me from Janelle. [It had] GC stationary heading, all that, and they had read my résumé and they felt I was qualified for the position,” Tarsell said.Next steps would be an interview with Patrick Chng over Google Hangouts. Chng apologized for the “unseemly approach” but said it was to stay on top of advancing technologies.Tarsell chatted for two hours providing detailed responses, and at the end, she was offered the Administrative Assistant/Data Entry position for .00 per hour.“I have a little dog that I can’t take to the vet because I’m really strapped for funds. I started to cry and I’m not a person who cries easily,” said Tarsell. She told her neighbor about the new job, and then her neighbor said it was really a job scam.“I felt let down, disappointed, and ashamed,” she said.Fortunately, Tarsell didn't lose any money, but Angie Barnett, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Greater Maryland said that's what they were after.“'Alright, let's set you up for employment, we need a bank account,’” said Barnett. “They'll give you a check for ,000, tell you use this website to buy your items, cash this check and when you do, you're cashing usually a bad check.”Tarsell suspects the scammer knew how long she had been looking and saw her as easy prey.“They might see how long a résumé’s been on file with Indeed and they might see that you’re really desperate. And desperation, you do a lot of things, and here I sit,” Tarsell said. 2009

BOSTON (AP) — Federal agencies say cybercriminals are unleashing a major ransomware assault against the U.S. health care system, targeting several hospitals and medical facilities. Independent security experts say it has already hobbled at least five U.S. hospitals this week, and could potentially impact hundreds more. In a joint alert, the FBI and two federal agencies say they have credible information of an imminent cybercrime threat to U.S. hospitals and health care providers. A release from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency says they, the FBI and the Department of Health and Human Services "assess malicious cyber actors are targeting the HPH Sector with Trickbot malware, often leading to ransomware attacks, data theft, and the disruption of healthcare services."They say malicious groups are targeting the sector with ransomware that could lead to data theft and disruption of health care services. They recommend hospitals and health facilities patch operating systems and update software, use multi-factor authentication when possible, disable unused ports, and audit logs and user accounts to ensure accounts are legitimate and accessing appropriate areas of the network.Although the attacks coincide with the U.S. presidential election, there is no immediate indication they are motivated by anything but profit. 1357

BEMIDJI, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota health officials say nine people who attended a Sept. 18 rally with President Donald Trump in the northern city of Bemidji later tested positive for the coronavirus. The Department of Health said Friday that two more cases were associated with a counter-protest nearby.Trump has visited Minnesota frequently this cycle in hopes of becoming the first Republican to win there since Richard Nixon in 1972.At his airport stop in Bemidji, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of Minneapolis, there was little sign of social distancing among the thousands of attendees, and many went without face masks.Health officials aren’t saying definitively that people contracted the virus at Trump’s rally. But health spokesperson Doug Schultz said the rally and a wedding the following day were “likely drivers” of increases in COVID-19 in Beltrami County in September.Trump himself tested positive for the coronavirus on Oct. 1.He was airlifted to Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland last Friday and then discharged on Monday. In September, the Minnesota Health Department confirmed to E.W. Scripps that a biker from Minnesota, who had COVID-19 and attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, died. 1238
