SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Families that use their homes as vacation rentals to help survive financially are taking a significant hit.A South Bay family tells 10News the coronavirus pandemic and state Stay At Home order temporarily ended their small business."We were living the American dream until this happened about two weeks ago," said Chris Morrow.About six years ago, before the housing market got hot, Chris and her husband Marty leveraged their money and bought a home in Chula Vista. They turned the charm of the house into a small business: an Airbnb rental. It's a move that drastically changed their life. They were regularly hosting large groups and even had a wedding in the backyard. Chris said before COVID-19, their house was booked every weekend heading into spring break. Now things have changed."Nobody is booking anything for the foreseeable future," Marty said. "So right now, we don't know what to expect when it's going to happen again."At ,000-plus a night, with a two-night minimum, that loss of income they've relied on could be backbreaking."We're going through our budget and trying to find ways to cut corners," Marty said. "The expenses, of course, are lower, but our income is lower and we have to do what we can to make it."Instead of waiting to see how everything shakes out, the Morrow's are trying to use the tools they do have to make some money.Chris and Marty are currently living on their boat, something made possible from the Airbnb income. They are using the luxury of being out on the water to document their life through YouTube videos. The pair are recoding what they see along the way. "Every day, we're doing a temperature check on video, and we're also talking about our daily diary," Chris said. Some of their recent videos include an interview line outside of local Amazon building, sunrises on the bay, and what life is like living on a boat. They're hoping the videos might eventually be able to be monetized because right now, they don't know when the rental business will be back with bookings."There's just so many things going on, so diversifying is the way to go right now," Chris said.Airbnb has a section on its website answering questions for hosts and guests. 2220

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- District Attorney Summer Stephan spoke about her new efforts to train officers and weed out “bad actors.”The push includes calls for a new independent Commission on Police Practices, which would replace the current Community Review Board on Police Practices. “Our communities need us to grieve with them, but they also need us as leaders to step up,” Stephan said. “Officers that are involved in abuse like what we saw with Mr. George Floyd have a history. They do not belong in a field where you supposed to serve and protect and you have the power between life and death.”She said part of the effort to train officers in de-escalating situations includes a new class that focuses on interactions with the public. “This is about interacting with someone that may have mental health issues, may appear not compliant, and how do you talk to them. How do you de-escalate? How do you show respect and communication?” she said. The goal is to train all 5,000 officers in the local departments. The independent Commission on Police Practices would have independent council and subpoena power. It still needs to qualify for the November ballot. Mayor Faulconer pledged his support for the ballot measure Monday. Stephan said she also supports it.“I support it because it is a balanced approach for oversight and transparency,” Stephan said. As of late last year, the city’s independent business analysis said the commission could cost between .1 to .3 million per year, depending on staffing. 1516

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eighty-five people linked to the Sinaloa Cartel were charged Thursday for their roles in a massive East County drug trafficking network.Eight indictments were unsealed in a San Diego federal court charging the alleged members with federal drug trafficking, money laundering, and firearms offenses, according to the Office of the United States Attorney Southern District of California.Investigators executed more than a dozen search warrants Thursday in a coordinated takedown of locations around the East County. Investigators discovered at least four pounds of methamphetamine and two firearms. The networks reportedly supplied a variety of controlled substances — like meth, heroin, and fentanyl — to distributors around Southern California, and then laundered tens of thousands of dollars in narcotics proceeds back to Sinaloa Cartel traffickers in Mexico. As of 1 p.m., 47 of the 85 charged were in federal or state custody. Some of the charges carry potential 20-year sentences and millions in fines.“Today we sent a message to drug traffickers in our community. If you sell drugs in San Diego, we will find you and prosecute you to the full extent of the law,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer.Authorities used surveillance, wire taps on phones, and undercover agents to obtain evidence and track encrypted communication by members through services like WhatsApp and Signal.Through wiretaps, investigators seized about 175 pounds of methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl; about ,000 in cash, multiple firearms; and a 2020 Cadillac Escalade valued at 5,000.Defendants will start to be arraigned Friday. 1638

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of workers are racing to finish construction of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's newest exhibit, "Walkabout Australia".It is scheduled to open to the public Friday, May 25. Monday, 10News was the first station invited for a behind-the-scenes tour. The various habitats are meant to reflect the deserts, plains, and rainforests of Australia. But the heart of the exhibit is a large open area in which 20 kangaroos and wallaby will be able to roam free with Safari Park guests."I think that the public will feel like there's virtually no barriers almost on the walkway going up and when they get inside. They're just going to have so much fun," said San Diego Zoo architect Robyn Badger.Zookeepers have been working with the animals before the exhibit opens, getting them comfortable with their new habitat and with being around humans. The kangaroos and wallaby are likely to approach guests on the path. If it happens, guests are asked to stay calm and avoid harassing the animals. While people are not encouraged to reach out to touch the animals first, if the animals make contact, it is okay to gently pet them."If you're calm and you're respectful of those animals, they're absolutely going to want to come and see what you're up to," said Animal Care Manager Steve Metzler.Other animals at Walkabout Australia include tree kangaroos, magpie geese, and cassowary. 1398
