Most parents want to start saving for college while their child is young, but a new study by the Center for Michigan found that might be difficult.In Massachusetts, families with two children are paying, on average, more than ,000 for child care in a year. State tuition for colleges average around that same price."Reality hits when you become a parent,” says mom Yvette Schilling. “And you are working extra hard and working full time and so is your husband."  Schilling says when it comes to child care, the family has to be really mindful of the cost and budget accordingly.On average, parents pay nearly 0 a week for two children in child care. Care.com estimates it at more than ,000 a year.Figuring out how to pay for day care has been a struggle for many mothers."We don't have any family around, so that becomes a little bit of a challenge," Shilling says.  She says hiring a nanny would have cost her almost triple what she's paying for daycare.  "Is it worth it for me to work full time, so we can pay ,000, or should I just stay home and watch my kids myself?” Schilling asks.   So, how can parents save money for child care?According to the Care website, one option is to sign up for a dependent care account through your employer. You can set aside up to ,000 tax-free pay for child care.  If your employer doesn't offer a flexible spending account, take advantage of the child care tax credit. Each family can itemize child care expenses up to ,000 a year and apply a tax credit to it.  To off-set some costs, nanny sharing is becoming a popular trend, allowing two families to share a nanny and split the cost. 1685

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The current law in Tennessee is clear: The use of deadly force is legal only in instances of self-defense or to protect the life of someone else.Outside of that, using deadly force is illegal. But some lawmakers in the state are seeking to expand those protections to include instances where homeowners would legally be able to shoot someone who stole from them."I think the last year has raised a lot of questions in Tennessee about whether you can use force or deadly force," said John Harris, executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association.Harris said the thinks the destructive demonstrations and looting in Nashville during protests against police brutality raised some concerns. Now, State Rep. Jay Reedy, a Republican, has filed a bill that would allow a person to use deadly force to protect their property.Harris said that with police occupied elsewhere, store owners under the current law could not use lethal force to stop looting during protests — and people are tired of it."The question is, does the criminal just laugh at them and keep stealing stuff? At some point, juries will say you have the right to defend it, and I don't care what the law says," Harris said.Lawmakers say the bill could address that frustration. But legal analysts say there are some aspects of the bill that are concerning. "The way it is written is very, very vague," said legal analyst Nick Leonardo.Leonardo understands concerns over violent protests, but he calls the bill "vigilante legislation."Leonardo said it could allow a victim — when there is no personal threat — to shoot a theft suspect in the back as he runs from the scene."To be able to just shoot someone because you thought they were taking your personal property is not where America is or we've been in the last hundred years," Leonardo said.Reedy concedes the bill, for now, is vague, and he expects it to be tightened up. But he also said law-abiding citizens have a right to protect their businesses or hard-earned personal property.House Bill 11 is now filed for consideration. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) - The father of a solar power worker injured in a Murrieta explosion wants answers about the disaster. Clay Borel’s 24-year-old son Anthony was working for Horizon Solar Panel the day the home blew up, KABC reported. "He was in pretty bad shape. I could see the cuts, and his head, and his face, legs, burned real bad on his arms, legs and face,” the father said. Anthony Borel was one of 14 people injured in the blast and can’t remember what happened that day. A man who worked for SoCal Gas died. Borel's father wants to know why the area was not evacuated between the time the gas started leaking and the explosion, KABC reports."That's enough time to say hey, move to the other side of the street, get out of the blast zone, while we figure out what's going on, so we can eliminate the threat." NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A suspect was taken into custody Monday night after an hours-long standoff in National City following a shooting. According to deputies, the shooting happened on the 2300 block of Prospect Street near Lincoln Acres School. Authorities confirmed that one person was shot but were unable to give further details. Deputies say the suspect barricaded himself inside a home after the shooting. A portion of Prospect Street was closed off for hours due to the incident.  529

Months of uncertainty and waves of a deadly virus don’t really seem like a good prelude to a strong Christmas season. However, if you take a look at Christmas tree and decoration sales, they tell a different story.It is one of the busiest years for Christmas tree sellers and farmers, and most of these businesses were not expecting a busy year.“Sales have been up a lot,” said Christopher Gregory. “We initially thought maybe people were buying early. Now, we think there are just more people buying and they’re buying early!”Gregory has owned of Elsie and Sons Christmas Trees, located in Boston, for 47 years and never expected this holiday season to be one of his busiest. In fact, just a few weeks ago, he worried about being able to sell anything this season.“We were afraid there would be a shutdown, that we would get all the Christmas trees in and the day after they’ll shut down,” said Gregory.However, that is so far from how this season has actually panned out. Sales for Christmas trees, wreaths, and almost every holiday decoration are selling so fast he worries about running out of stock now.“We are running out of stuff and it is only the 8th of December,” Gregory added.The Boston Christmas tree seller explained local farmers have stopped cutting trees, so to get more trees, he has to place an order from a tree farm in Canada. Even with this additional order, he is anticipating still not have enough trees for all the demand and says he’ll likely end his season early.All across the country, Christmas tree sales are up almost 30 percent, according to a survey of tree retailers done by Evercore ISI. It seems people are not only buying more Christmas trees, but they are focused on buying bigger ones and spending more on additional season decorations.The uptick is notably unexpected since typically during economic downturns consumers pull back on unnecessary spending. They have not historically pulled back from Christmas tree shopping, but most economists and business owners would likely have forecasted a decline in spending on additional décor.That is, in fact, what Gregory forecasted for his business this season.“It’s a comfort to people, I think, observing the tradition, decorating the house and so on. This is what people get pleasure from now,” said Gregory.Gregory says he is just happy to be a part of something bringing people some much-needed joy this year. 2407
