SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- We've all seen the nasal swabs being pushed far up noses to test for coronavirus. And if you've had it done, you know it's uncomfortable. But more tests are being developed where all you have to do is spit into a tube."You basically open up your mouth, we collect a tiny bit of saliva and you're done. Your side is done," said Dr. Henry Ji, President and CEO of San Diego based Sorrento Theraputics.According to Ji, the biopharma company is on track to start producing a rapid saliva test developed by researchers at Columbia University.It's being called "COVI TRACE" and it can be used almost anywhere.It gives results in about 30 minutes, with the liquid color changing from red to yellow if it's positive for Covid-19.Preliminary results indicate the test has high accuracy rates.Sorrento also says "COVI TRACE" is highly sensitive, meaning it can detect the presence of Covid-19 very early on.Sorrento executives say they plan to submit the test for FDA approval within the next few weeks."While the FDA is reviewing and leading up to review we are gearing up to manufacture hundreds of thousands and millions of tests; eventually anticipating about a hundred million tests a month," said Sorrento's Henry Brunswick.As for the cost, Ji says they're trying to keep it widely affordable, at around .At this point there's no estimate for when the rapid saliva "COVI TRACE" test could be approved by the FDA, but Sorrento is submitting an emergency use request in hopes of speeding up the process. 1528

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - USD head men’s basketball coach Lamont Smith is free Wednesday pending an investigation on domestic violence charges in San Francisco.The San Francisco Police Department released Smith's mugshot from Sunday's arrest. Smith was taken into custody at the Oakland airport just before the team was set to fly home from a game.Smith is accused of three domestic violence charges involving a woman at the team's hotel late Saturday night. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Volunteers spent Wednesday afternoon putting some TLC into the Balboa Park Carousel.Built over 100 years ago, the carousel has broken down only three times. That's in part due to support from the community and the dedication of Carousel Manager Bill Brown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Young adults in the U.S. are moving more frequently than they did in 1960, according to a new report by Zillow. Data from San Diego, however, paints a different picture. According to the site, 33.8 percent of young adults in 1960 lived in their current home for less than two years. In 2017, more than 45 percent of young adults had lived in their current home for less than two years. San Diego, however, bucks the trend. In America’s Finest City, in 2017 the share of young adults who lived in a home less than two years is 50.6 percent, down from 54.4 percent in 1960. The data show that young San Diegans are moving less than in 1960. Among young adults who recently moved in the San Diego area, more than 68 percent moved within the metro, while 9.4 percent moved from a different metro in the state and 22.3 percent moved from outside the state. According to Zillow, changes in workplace norms have contributed to the changes in housing tenures. Zillow also says that, rather than climb the corporate ladder, many young adults move from one role or job to the next. The typical employed Millennial has been with their current employer for 2.8 years, according to Zillow. 1205
