At least seven people were killed in northwestern New Mexico when a tractor-trailer crashed head-on with a nearly packed Greyhound bus, officials said."We do expect that number to rise," New Mexico State Police spokesman Officer Ray Wilson said on Thursday. Nearby was an overturned vehicle and the truck trailer on its side, with what appeared to be produce boxes spilled on the median.One witness, Chris Jones, was driving along the highway when he came upon the crash site. He quickly jumped out of his car to help the injured when he didn't see any ambulances around."Just trying to help them, comfort them, calm them down, get them taken care of until EMS got there," Jones told CNN affiliate KCAL.Jones, who has medical training as Navy veteran and volunteer firefighters, said he first tried to get an idea of who was hurt.Another witness, Marc Gonzales, said the scene was a "complete catastrophe," with skid marks on the side of the road. Passengers tried to climb out the bus windows and bystanders grabbed ladders from their vehicles to try to rescue them, he said."It's by far one of the worst accidents I've encountered. ... It was horrible," Gonzales told KRQE."You could tell that people were distressed, screams were coming from the bus," he said.Twenty patients were initially taken to the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, acting chief medical officer Dr. Kevin Gaines told reporters. Some families were among the patients, as well as four children, he said.Ten patients were being treated for injuries ranging from broken bones to bruises, he said. According to CNN, the professor wanted to make sure the masks they bought were effective.Researchers gathered 14 kinds of masks, including the professionally-fitted N95 mask, a bandana, homemade cotton varieties, and a surgical mask. ATLANTA (AP) — Two more Atlanta police officers have been fired over an incident in which two college students were pulled from a car during a protest against police brutality.Atlanta police confirmed Wednesday that Sgt. Lonnie Hood and Officer Armon Jones were fired as a result of their involvement in the May 30 incident.Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and police Chief Erika Shields previously announced the firing of two other officers who were involved in the incident.Hood and Jones were among the officers caught on camera shouting at a young couple in a car in downtown traffic during the Black Lives Matter protests. The cops then proceeded to fire Tasers at the pair and dragged them from the vehicle.Throughout the incident, the man and woman can be heard screaming and asking what they did wrong.The four officers who have been fired and two other cops are facing criminal charges in connection with the altercation.Hood is charged with aggravated assault against both Young and Pilgrim for using a Taser against both of them, according to an arrest warrant obtained by The Associated Press. He is also charged with simple battery for violently pulling Pilgrim from the car and throwing her down on to the street, the warrant says.Jones is charged with aggravated battery for hurting Young’s left arm when he dragged him from the car and slammed him onto the street, the warrant says. We asked doctors to weigh in."I think it makes me a little nervous as an infectious disease doctor. A couple reasons. One, it's bringing a lot of people in close proximity and I think we don’t really know what the potential is for transmission in children to other children and adults," said Dr. Beth Thielen, an infectious disease expert with the University of Minnesota.Dr. Thielen says there are still a lot of unknowns when it comes to how easily children can spread the coronavirus to each other. Plus, the effectiveness of masks at an indoor venue like a trampoline park could be minimal. "It's a lot of people in a potentially close space where there’s a lot of aggressive jumping and such, more respiratory secretions. Potentially similar to singing or other activities where you’re producing a lot of droplets and I think that there's real potential to spread in a confined group at this time," Dr. Thielen said.We reached out to dozens of trampoline facilities, bounce house venues and bowling alleys across the country. She adds, if she were forced to choose between a trampoline park, bounce house venue or bowling alley, she'd go with bowling alley."I think if people go to a bowling alley and they're wearing masks and staying in their individual space, then there's potential physical separation between people in one lane and another. That's something I would be looking at, can you maintain physical space from other people? It seems harder in a trampoline park but if that could be done safely that would be a positive factor," said Dr. Thielen. Above all, ensuring people are not sick at these indoor venues is key. And it's best to leave high risk populations, such as people with medical concerns or over the age of 60, at home. 3210
