San Diego will seek to invalidate its landmark pension law, a citizens' initiative 65 percent of voters approved in 2012.The City Council voted 6-3 Monday to go to court to invalidate 2012's Proposition B, which switched most new hires from a pension to a 401(k) style plan. The decision came after multiple courts ruled the city skipped a key step in the campaign. The courts said then-Mayor Jerry Sanders' involvement meant the city needed to meet and confer with unions, but didn't. The courts required the city to make employees whole plus a seven percent penalty, but didn't invalidate the law. The city will now to go to court along side its employee associations to get it off the books. "It's illogical for the city to believe that having broken the law in order to get Prop B into the charter that you should be allowed to keep it in there," said attorney Ann Smith, representing the Municipal Employees Association. Firefighter John Hernandez II said he's seen a number of his colleagues leave for other departments, which offer better benefits - namely a pension."In my line of work, we can't work as long as most people, and that's why we need pensions," he said. But Councilman Scott Sherman, who voted to protect Prop B, said ultimately going back to pensions could cripple the city. "Every single year we make a 0 million minimum payment on our pension debt from the old system that too us to that point, and now they're asking us to go right back to that system," he said.Sherman said it's low unemployment, not a lack of benefits, leading to the city's worker retention issues. Former City Councilman Carl DeMaio, a major proponent of Prop B, said he would seek to defend the measure in court. 1722

SAN DIEGO, California — A former Major League Baseball pitcher was awarded .3 million for injuries sustained after punching a man reportedly on LSD outside his Northern California home.Greg Reynolds claimed his career was cut short after he broke his hand punching Domenic Pintarelli on Jan. 16, 2015. Reynolds' attorney?Niall McCarthy says his client was attacked outside his home by Pintarelli, who was attending a party next door at a neighbor's house.McCarthy said both Pintarelli and the neighbor, Connor Pope, had taken LSD. Pope did not attack Reynolds but Pintarelli did, he alleges.Reynolds punched Pintarelli, breaking his pitching hand and costing his ability to "move and control" a baseball, McCarthy argues. Evidently, a jury agreed, awarding the former MLB pitcher .3 million in damages. The award includes 0,000 for Greg Reynolds's wife, Megan.Reynolds started pitching for the Colorado Rockies' minor league team in 2006 before moving up to the big leagues in 2008. He also pitched for the Texas Rangers in 2012 and the Cincinnati Reds in 2013.Reynolds went on to pitch in Japan in 2014 before the incident. The San Diego Padres signed Reynolds to a minor league contract in 2016 but ended up releasing him.After his baseball career ended, Reynolds returned to his alma mater of Stanford to earn a degree in economics, according to The Mercury News. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Poway gun store is set to sell 1 million rounds of ammunition by the end of the year.It’s called the “1 million round month.” Managers at Poway Weapons and Gear Range are stocking up for the sale that begins on Black Friday. Customers can get their hands on all the ammunition they need before changes come to gun stores next year. The law, which kicks off in July 2019 says, in addition to a gun permit, gun owners will have to pass a background check to buy ammo.RELATED: March poll shows how San Diegans?feel about gun control“Then when they buy ammo we have to log into a database and report how much ammo they buy,” says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales Operations at the store.The data logged will then be sent to the Department of Justice. “We need to remain vigilant that guns and ammunition don’t get in the hands of people that shouldn’t have them,” says Ron Marcus with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. Gun control activists say the new law is an important move toward safety. Poway Weapons and Gear range say the ammunition will be sold at a discounted price for the sale.  1150

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Honor Flight is a National organization that takes older veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials, and the nonprofit just announced that all flights in 2020 will be postponed. For Honor Flight San Diego, the two canceled trips in 2020 means 160 World War II and Korean War veterans will have to wait until May of 2021 to take the trip, putting a year and a half between trips. Nationally, an estimated 20,000 veterans are being impacted by 2020’s cancellations.Holly Shaffner is the Director of Public Relations for Honor Flight San Diego and said the local chapter is still trying to find ways to keep the excitement for the veterans who are unable to travel this year. She said one of the emotional surprises for the veterans on the trip is “mail call,” when they surprise the group with a package of letters from family, friends and strangers thanking them for their service. This is to pay tribute to getting letters from home while they were in the service.“In World War II they didn’t have the technology that we have today where you can do FaceTime and emails,” said Shaffner.Honor Flight San Diego has already collected about 1,900 letters that they had planned to give out to the veterans on the 2020 trip, so organizers decided to use these letters to lift the spirits of the veterans who now have to wait a year for the trip. Honor Flight will be putting together mail call packages to mail to the veterans homes for them to open, hopefully giving them something to look forward to.Shaffner said one of the hardest realizations for them is acknowledging that of the World War II veterans on the list, not all of them will still be alive.“The reality for us is that when we start making the phone calls for them to go on that trip in May, there will be veterans that have passed away and there will be veterans that cannot travel,” she said.She hopes sending the letters to their home will help keep their spirits high during this lull.Winona Ruth Gunther is 100 years old and is one of the World War II veterans who was supposed to go in 2020. She said she’s worried about public places right now so she respects the decision to wait until 2021.“At my age you really take a chance when you get into a crowd and an airplane particularly,” she said.She worked as a corpsman in the Hospital Corps of the Navy in World War II. She has stories of caring for injured people in California and says those hard memories are the ones that stay with her. She’s already seen many of the memorials in Washington D.C., but said she was looking forward to going with the Honor Flight group because of the connection they all will feel seeing these memorials together.“It’s the camaraderie that you have with people that have similar experiences that you look forward to,” she said.Now, she waits for May of 2021, with some surprise letters heading her way thanks to Honor Flight.Shaffner said another obstacle the nonprofit is facing is keeping funding up. When the veterans are taken to Washington D.C., they don’t pay a dime. Everything, from the flight to the food, is paid for by donations. She said it costs about 0,000 for the two trips from San Diego. Shaffner said right now, they only have enough money raised for one trip in 2021. She said if they could, they would take even more than the planned 160 people next year to make up for the two lost trips in 2020, but that would be dependent on funding, which isn’t possible right now. 3487
