SHANGHAI, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai municipal government Monday launched the microblog "Shanghai City" on China's popular Twitter-like microblogging service Weibo.com.The microblog, officially verified as originating from the Information Office of Shanghai Municipal Government (IOSMG), has accumulated more than 30,000 followers in the five hours since its launch.According to IOSMG, the content of the postings will be mainly about new policies and regulations, practical information related to activities in Shanghai, and interactions with Internet users over issues of public concern.Vegetable prices, the selection of affordable housing, and upcoming cultural activities in Shanghai are included in the first several postings.Some 600 government agencies and 300 government officials of various levels in Shanghai have verified Weibo accounts, the IOSMG said.The "Shanghai Metro," the official microblog of the city's metro operator with over 1.15 million followers, is considered one of most influential government microblogs in China.The latest statistics show that China now has more than 300 million registered microblog users. JINAN, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough that could lead to more effective treatments for leprosy.A team from Shandong Provincial Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in east China has identified two new risk variants near IL23R and RAB 32 genes that are responsible for the disease, according to a report published online Monday in the scientific journal Nature Genetics.Knowing that the two gene variants influence susceptibility to leprosy could allow doctors to diagnose the disease in sufferers earlier in its outset, as well as to develop new treatments. A genetic database could now be built up to predict those people particularly susceptible to leprosy, said Zhang Furen, the leader of the research team.The study involved more than 10,000 samples being taken from leprosy sufferers and healthy test subjects and analysed.Leprosy is a chronic nerve-killing disease that leads to problems with patients' skin, feet, hands, legs and eyes. More than 200,000 newly-contracted leprosy cases are reported worldwide every year, and China has around one tenth of the world's sufferers. 

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao will meet with his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, at the 19th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leadership Meeting, said China's Assistant Foreign Minister, Wu Hailong, on Monday.He said the APEC summit will be held from Nov. 12 to 13 in Hawaii, with the theme of "seamless regional economy."According to Wu, speaking at a Foreign Ministry media briefing, Hu will attend the "APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting, Leaders' Dialogue with Representatives from APEC Business Advisory Council, and APEC CEO Summit."China hopes the APEC members will implement the economic growth strategy agreed last year, striving to achieve a balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and safe economic growth, said Wu.China expects the APEC members to comprehensively promote regional trade and investment liberalization, he said, adding that all member states should fulfill their commitments and oppose all forms of trade protectionism.Wu said APEC should strengthen economic and technical cooperation to enhance the development ability of the developing members, and therefore to achieve common prosperity."APEC members generally hold positive attitudes toward U.S. proposals in various fields such as green growth, innovation policy. ULAN BATOR, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia will continue to curb the spread of HIV and strive to maintain a low prevalence of the AIDS epidemic, a government official said Thursday.Gansukh Battulga, an official with the National Committee on AIDS, told Xinhua that Mongolia is currently an HIV low-prevalence country with a total of 99 people, 15 of whom have died, infected with the virus that causes AIDS."Among the 99 HIV infected cases, 81 percent are men, and the remaining 19 percent are women," Battulga said. "Among the male infected cases, 83 percent belong to MSM (men who have sex with men) group while sex workers account for 54 percent of the female infected cases."The official said the government has launched a variety of programs and tasked the National Committee on AIDS to coordinate all organizations in fighting the epidemic.According to a National Strategy Plan for 2010-2015, Mongolia will strive to maintain its current low HIV-prevalence rate of below 5 percent in the most-at-risk population.

CANBERRA, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Scientists from Australia's University of New England on Friday said they had discovered the remarkably fossil isa metre-long arthropod with excellent vision called anomalocaris from Emu Bay Shale of South Australia.The scientists reported their finding on the anomalocaris in thescience journal Nature this week.It is reported that anomalocaris is a fearsome ancient predator that swam in the Cambrian oceans 500 million years ago. The researchers said the presence of anomalocaris would have driven the development of protective adaptations in prey animals. Such an escalatory 'arms race' would have seen, for instance, the evolution of such adaptations in prey as shells, camouflage and burrowing into sediments. "It has been unbelievably frustrating being able to see eyes like these at fossil sites like the Burgess Shale (in the Canadian Rocky Mountains), but not have any details. It is really refreshing to have our ideas about these animals confirmed at last, " comments Simon Conway Morris, a palaeontologist at the University of Cambridge, the United Kingdom.The research team was led by paleontologist Dr John Paterson, of the University of New England. He said the most surprising discovery of anomalocaris is the huge number of tiny hardened lenses in each eyes."When you consider that a modern housefly, for example, has about 3000 lenses, it's pretty impressive that an animal half a billion years old already has remarkable vision like this," Paterson said in statement."The fact that each eye in anomalocaris would have had over 16, 000 lenses means it would have very, very good resolution."Paterson said the acute vision of Anomalocaris gave it a distinct advantage over competing predators and prey, as many Cambrian animals either had poor vision or were completely blind. Its acute vision rivals or exceeds that of most living insects and was probably comparable to predatory dragonflies today.He said their findings support the idea that compound eyes evolved very early on in arthropod evolution, before the evolution of jointed legs or hardened exoskeletons.The research team hopes they can find the more fossil remains of Cambrian creatures in the Emu Bay Shale.
