SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The threat of President Trump shutting down the southern border is causing widespread concerns in San Diego and Tijuana. Ev Meade is the director of USD's Transborder Institute. He says the impact on specific industries would be severe. "Think about the auto industry. You can't build a car in the United States or Canada right now without the part of the supply chain that's in Mexico. It's just fatal to shut that down," said Meade. He says even if the president doesn't close the border, the threat alone is damaging. "If you think about agriculture, on the other hand, Mexico is the biggest buyer of a long list of agricultural products, even if it doesn't happen, just the uncertainty that is cast over the market by doing that hurts that, it tells people we got to find another supply because we don't want to have empty shelves," said Meade. This weekend, President Trump announced he was cutting off funding to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. He also blamed Mexico for not doing enough to stop the flow of asylum seekers making their way north to the United States. Meade says cutting off aid to Central American countries will only lead to more migrants fleeing. "If you look at where it goes to, it goes to things like training the security forces, and training their immigration enforcement and strengthening judicial systems. There's some food and public health, and other things that are covered by it, but it's some real basic institutions in these societies that are pretty fragile to begin with and pulling that funding I think, I don't know anyone who thinks it's going to make them stronger, and if they're not stronger, it's not going to alleviate the pressure for people to leave," said Meade. Others say something has to be done. Marcia, who didn't want to give her last name, crosses the border at San Ysidro often to go to the dentist in Tijuana. She said cutting aid and closing the border might be a good idea."I think they need to manage their own governments and own borders, and we're not the bank of the world. We can't pay for everyone anymore. Everybody has to pay their fair share and take care of their own countries." Meade says all the countries need to work together on a solution to the immigration system. "Right now, you can't live in your home town or home city, but coming 1,500 miles to the United States and getting an individual asylum adjudication, that may be too high of a bar to cross, what's option B? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of 16-24 year olds looking for jobs is rising across the country, almost getting back to the level it was at before the recession.According to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20.89 million teens and young adults had jobs in the summer of 2017. That made it the 7th straight year of employment growth in that industry.Similarly, the unemployment rate for people aged 16-24 fell for the 7th straight year. It was at 9.6%, the lowest it had been since 2000. While there still aren't as many teens and young adults working as there was in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, it's a sign that more are looking for, and finding jobs."I'm Saving for a Car"Like many of his peers, Coronado High School Junior Quinn Perez plans to work this summer. He already has a job lined up at Holland's Bicycles."I've worked there for about 2 years now and I've worked my wya up to one of the manager positions," Quinn says.His goal is simple, to save enough for a car."I've always been a fan of Camaros," he says, before adding, "But I'll probably go for a Honda or Jetta or something like that. A little more in my price range."Other students just like having their own money to spend, like Anna Hinz, who is still looking for a job for the summer."It makes me feel like I have a little control over everything I do, rather than my parents making plans for me.""It's all about the attitude"But for the people who do the hiring, why you're working can be as big of an indicator of success as anything.Patti Woods is the Talent Acquisition Supervisor for the YMCA. She oversees hiring of around 1,500 teens and young adults each summer to work as counselors and lifeguards.She says your attitude is as important as anything else."Skills can be learned," she says. "I want people who are positive, flexible and willing to take feedback."Woods advises teens and young adults to start their job search early. The YMCA does most of their summer hiring in the spring, because they have thousands of applicants to consider."Don't think you need to wait for the summer to find a summer job," she says. If you wait for summer, a lot of those jobs will be gone already."Woods says the Y still has some open positions. Other fields, like retail and restaurants still have lots of openings as well. A recent search of sites like jobs.com and Monster.com for the keywords "Teen Jobs, San Diego" turned up hundreds of jobs. Most of them were at malls or movie theaters.The Start of a CareerYour future plans are also something to keep in mind when looking for a summer job. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Secretary of the Interior stated in no uncertain terms in a letter sent to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Thursday federal law supersedes state law. This was in reference to an ordinance the San Diego County Board of Supervisors passed in November banning recreational shooting, saying it was unconstitutional.Currently the law states you can shoot at targets on BLM land, "as long as it is done in a safe manner, without damaging natural resources or improvements on public lands." There is a section that states you may not fire any plastic pellets, exploding, tracer or steel core rounds. This is to prevent wildfires.RELATED: San Diego County Board of Supervisors approves recreational shooting ban near DulzuraCounty Supervisor Diane Jacob said the goal of the ordinance was also to prevent wildfires, coming after the Gate Fire in May of 2017, sparked near an area known for target practice."She immediately blamed the fire on the shooting and she had no evidence," Executive Director of San Diego Gun Owners PAC Michael Schwartz said. He also said the board never spoke to the federal government."When he [the Secretary of the Interior] found out the entire department said no this isn’t something we’re going to stand by at all," Schwartz said. The Secretary of the Interior sent a statement to the Board of Supervisors Thursday citing the Supremacy clause in the Constitution and, "law enforcement personnel have no authority to enforce unconstitutional pronouncements of law."RELATED: After Gate Fire, recreational shooting ban hits public landsJacob fired back with this statement: "The BLM decision is unfortunate and frustrating because this area is highly prone to wildfire, and we've already learned the hard way that shooting at this spot poses a significant risk to life and property. I appreciate the BLM's offer to discuss this issue further because it's critical that we do all we can to put public safety first."Schwartz, glad to see the powerful statement, said, "it’s not ambiguous it’s very clear, no this isn’t going to happen, its out of your jurisdiction."Schwartz says the regulation has been put on hold after that letter reached the board. "The gun owners consider this a huge win, it shows what activism can do and when people band together and get involved we can stop unconstitutional regulations by elected officials abusing their power," he said, adding he hopes to see the ordinance removed from the books. 2485
