NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A video show about Chinese people made its debut on screens at Times Square on Monday, presenting Americans a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people.With China's traditional red as the theme color, the 60-second video was shown on six screens simultaneously at Times Square with a billboard written "Experience China" on top of the screens. The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese president Hu Jintao has urged medical units to take all efforts to cure those wounded when fighting a deadly fire on a grassland in the country's southwest.A strong gust of wind whipped up a blaze that engulfed fire fighters and local residents who were trying to put out embers in a mountain valley in Daofu County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province Sunday afternoon.The fire left 22 dead and injured many before it was finally put out Monday morning. The dead included soldiers and civilians.According to Li Bing with the provincial health bureau, the injured have been sent to the provincial capital of Chengdu for treatment.

NANJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- About 5,000 Chinese and foreigners gathered Monday in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, to mourn hundreds of thousands of people who were killed by invading Japanese troops 73 years ago.Participants in the ceremony stood in silent tribute, offered wreaths and bowed in front of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre, with sirens wailing in the drizzling morning on Monday, the 73rd anniversary of the massive slaughter."The Japanese soldiers invaded Nanjing when I was four, and they killed some of my family members. On the anniversary of the massacre every year I would come here to express my grief," said Sun Xuelan, a 77-year-old survivor, who is confined to a wheelchair.Japanese troops occupied Nanjing on Dec. 13, 1937 and began a six-week massacre. Records show more than 300,000 people -- not only disarmed soldiers , but also civilians -- were killed.Mikhalchev Mikhail, deputy director of the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Russia, said, "In the history of human civilization, some facts shouldn't be forgotten, and the Nanjing Massacre was one of them."He noted that the tragedy had become a symbol of the Chinese people's bitter suffering and prompted all people to learn the preciousness of peace.""We should remember the history, but not hatred. BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged more efforts to maintain steady and rapid economic growth and accelerate the transformation of the economic development pattern over the next five years.Li made the remarks Wednesday at a seminar on goals and policies of China's key 12th Five-year (2011-2015) Plan, according to a statement by the State Council, or China's Cabinet, on Thursday.At the seminar, the State Council solicited advice from senior officials of Tianjin Municipality, Jilin, Jiangsu, Henan, Yunnan and Gansu provinces, on the draft of the guidelines of the five-year plan.After listening to suggestions from provincial-level officials, Vice Premier Li said it is imperative for local governments to accelerate the transformation of the economic development pattern, while maintaining steady and rapid economic growth in the long term to benefit all Chinese people.As for the work next year, Li said local governments should more actively and prudently handle the relationship between keeping steady and rapid economic development, restructuring the economy and managing inflation expectations."More efforts should be provided to stabilize prices next year," he told the seminar.When planning goals and strategies for the development over the next five years, Li said, major indicators, such as the economic growth rates, should be defined "reasonably" and binding targets should be emphasized.Over the next five years, China will open wider to the outside world, expand its domestic consumption, push the reform of the income distribution system, create more jobs and improve its basic public service and social security system, he said.Li noted that local governments should work hard to allow residents' income growth to keep pace with the economic growth rate, and assure that laborers' wage hikes reflect productivity increases.
