BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung Soo described Friday the rapid growth of bilateral ties with China as "unprecedented".     "We have witnessed over five million ROK and Chinese people visit each other's country and the two-way trade volume expand 26 times bigger during the 17 years since ROK and China forged a diplomatic relationship", Han said. Han made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua on the sideline of a spring conference of the Institute of International Finance in Beijing.     He said being neighbors, cultural similarity and friendship between the two peoples offered a solid foundation for the two nations to foster ties.     China and the ROK agreed to upgrade their "comprehensive and cooperative partnership" to "strategic cooperative partnership" in May, 2008 during the ROK president Lee Myung-bak's first visit to China. After the test, it also fired some short-range missiles.     "The status of a non-nuclear peninsula is not only a must for the peace and stability on the peninsula, but also for that of East Asia and the world," Han said, expressing his hope that China, which chairs the six-party talks, could continue to play its positive and constructive role.     Launched in 2003, the six-party talks grouped China, DPRK, ROK, the United States, Russia and Japan. The talks have been stalled since the top negotiators last met in Beijing last December.

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao visited two primary schools in Beijing Sunday, joining children in language classes, games and kite painting, and wishing them a healthy and bright future.     Hu made the visits on the eve of the annual International Children's Day, which falls on Monday and will be celebrated by about 250 million children under the age of 14 across the country.     Hu first went to Jushan Primary School, where 90 percent of some 700 students are children of migrant workers from outside the Chinese capital. BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will send a sports delegation to participate in the 2009 World Games to be held in Kaohsiung, a southern coastal city of Taiwan.     Liu Peng, chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), said athletes from nine associations of the COC will compete in the games.     He made the promise during his meeting with Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu in Beijing Friday.     The mainland will also send an observation delegation to the games, Liu said, adding that sports is a medium and bridge which connects people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.     Chen Chu said her delegation hoped to learn from the successful experience of the Beijing Olympic Games.     She led a promotion team for the 2009 World Games to the mainland on Thursday. The games will be held from July 16 to 26.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China said Wednesday that boosting regional trade and investment was a crucial task for countries in east Asia.     Premier Wen Jiabao also called on countries in east Asia to "deepen financial cooperation and infrastructure construction to increase the ability to confront economic risks." During talks with his Thai counterpart, Abhisit Vejjajiva, Wen said China would always support the leading role the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) played in east Asia. SHENZHEN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Saturday that the ARATS will offer more support to help Taiwan businessmen weather through the financial crisis.     Chen said this at a symposium here Saturday on the development of Taiwan companies amid the financial crisis.     According to the Taipei World Trade Center, the second purchase delegation from the mainland had shown intention to purchase more than 600 million U.S. dollars worth of goods from Taiwan companies in the coming 12 months during a weeklong visit to the island, mainly involving food, drinks, garments and daily necessities.     "Under the current circumstances, we should positively seek more cooperation opportunities to overcome the hardships," said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     The mainland will send the third procurement delegation to the island in August, focusing on the island's chemical industry, electronic products and automobiles.     More than 50 representatives from the mainland-based Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Taiwan-based "Chinese National Federation of Industries" and other organizations attended the symposium, which was jointly held by the ARATS and the SEF.
