It’s not uncommon to convert an old warehouse into lofts or apartments.But what about converting something a little more unique, a little more historic?Something like, a church?That’s what developers did in a Denver, Colorado neighborhood. The Gothic-revival, Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1889, designed by Denver architect Franklin E. Kidder. It was declared an historic landmark in 1970. But that didn't stop it from ending up abandoned as the neighborhood changed.Enter developers with a vision. They re-envisioned the church as The Sanctuary Lofts. They preserved much of the church’s unique features, like the stained-glass windows, exposed brick, and wood paneling, and converted the church into condominiums. There’s even a confessional in one of the condos serving as the room’s focal point.One of the 12 condos in this church was recently on the market. Realtor David Wheaton said each unit offers different pieces of the past. “In some units we actually have stained glass windows exposed and holy items that were a part of the church that are actually infused into the units," said Wheaton. “Many of these buildings such as this church, the congregation wasn’t able to support it financially. It kind of fell into disrepair for a while and it was deconsecrated at some time.”While this conversion was done long before the current housing crisis, it underscores the need to find places to live. In this case, the condos come with a completely unique twist on what’s possible.This converted church is just one example of creative living makeovers.The Arcade, the first indoor shopping mall in the United States, is now home to 48 apartments.  The Arcade is in Providence, Rhode Island and was built in 1828. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark.In Charleston, South Carolina, the Cigar Factory is another example of an historic building beginning a new chapter.  It was built in 1881 as a cotton manufacturing facility before converting to cigar production in 1903. While plans to transform it into condos 100 years later were ultimately scrapped, it’s now home to office, restaurant and event space.  2265

The order from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine came based on recommendations from The Ohio Children’s Hospital Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.Carol Gebhardt, a fourth-grade teacher at Mason Elementary School, said she wants to make sure her students are being safe.“I think that if we show them, we show our students that, you know, we can make the best of this situation, that it will hopefully roll over onto them,” she said. “I've seen a lot of funny memes about what's going to happen. But I think also if you are modeling that, wearing it at the beginning of the year and setting up that 'this is good for us. This is good for our safety. We want to wear these.’ These are a positive thing.”Dr. Josh Schazzfin, Cincinnati Children's leading expert on infection prevention and control and associate professor of infectious disease, said wearing a mask is like other learned behaviors for kids.“We're not born knowing to brush our teeth or to put on clothes or to wear shoes, how to behave,” he said. “A child will respond to incentives -- a star on a chart that leads to a reward. The child gets to choose what kind of mask or the logo on a mask. The child's obsessed with Marvel Comics, the child's obsessed with dinosaurs, put those on the mask.”Schazzfin agreed with Gebhardt, that parents and teachers should lead by example on this issue.“Number one, we lead by example, and number two, we set expectations. This is acceptable, this is not acceptable,” Schazzfin said.Schazzfin said it's not about forcing the issue but finding the best way to acclimate your child to wear a mask.Hamilton County officials are working to make sure schools have a stockpile of masks and other PPE for students and teachers.Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency partnered with the county Educational Service Center to provide masks, 350 no-touch thermometers, and 50,000 face shields to schools in the county.This story was originally reported by Pat LaFleur at WCPO. 2175

It was her second time lying numb in a hospital bed in North Bergen, New Jersey, with blood streaming down her legs and fear creeping into her heart.At that moment, Timoria McQueen Saba thought to herself, "there's no way in the world that I'm the only woman who had this happen," she said.In 2010, after giving birth vaginally to her oldest daughter, Gigi, one late afternoon in April, postpartum hemorrhage or excessive bleeding -- the leading cause of maternal death worldwide -- nearly killed her.Then, about a year later, she started bleeding profusely in the small bathroom of a frozen yogurt shop. The blood was from a miscarriage, which left her feeling helpless in that hospital bed. She didn't know she was pregnant."I was all the way back to where I was the year before, and I realized ... I hadn't healed from the near-fatal traumatic experience the year before," said Saba, now the 39-year-old mother of two girls.The former celebrity makeup artist, who saw clients such as novelists Candace Bushnell and Kyra Davis, decided to become a maternal health advocate, speaking on behalf of the 830 women who die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications every day around the world. That's about 303,000 a year.Each year in the United States, about 700 to 1,200 women die from pregnancy or childbirth complications, and black women like Saba are about three to four times more likely to die of pregnancy or delivery complications than white women.The quick-witted, savvy Saba said the data shocked her."It really took me a while to digest it," she said -- she survived something that many others around the world haven't."What was different about me? Why didn't I die? What were the reasons for that?" she asked. INDIANAPOLIS -- A suspected drunk driver whose middle name is “Tequila” crashed into three cars across from the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis before fleeing on foot Sunday morning, according to police.The crash happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Sunday in Indianapolis, just across from the museum.According to an incident report, 33-year-old Alisha Tequila Jefferson was driving a 2006 Dodge Charger when she collided with three vehicles parked on the street.Police said Jefferson fled on foot, but was found hiding in the bushes a short distance away.Jefferson was arrested on preliminary charges of OWI, driving while suspended and leaving the scene of an accident. 682

It has been more than two weeks since the Camp Fire devastated parts of California, especially the community of Paradise, but for one pet owner, not all was lost. Andrea Gaylord had to go several weeks not being allowed to return home due to the fire, which was the deadliest in California history. When Gaylord returned home on Wednesday, her dog was there waiting for her. According to KXTV, lost her home in the Camp Fire. But she considers herself fortunate. "You could never ask for a better animal," Gaylord told KXTV. "You really couldn't."Gaylord had some assistance from an animal rescue volunteer who was allowed inside of the evacuation zone. Shayla Sullivan took care of Gaylord's other dog Miguel, which is also Madison's brother. Sullivan would leave food and water at what was left of Gaylord's home in hopes that Madison would come around. Gaylord said when she pulled up to her home in Paradise, Madison was there waiting for her. "Imagine the loyalty of hanging in in the worst of circumstances and being here waiting," Gaylord told KXTV "It was so emotional." 1121
