MILAN, Italy, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here on Tuesday that China and Italy should explore new areas of cooperation as they face major opportunities in addressing the grim challenges of the international financial crisis.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.He arrived in Milan on Monday evening for an official goodwill visit. Wu met with Roberto Formiconi, president of Lombard Region of Italy on Tuesday.     During the meeting, Wu said as one of the most economically vigorous regions in Italy, the Lombard Region is leading the country in carrying out cooperation with China. He expressed appreciation of China's active response to the financial crisis, saying that China's development is encouraging and provides fresh air to the world.     Formiconi said the Lombard Region is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in such fields as economy, technology, energy efficiency, environment protection, education and tourism. He welcomes more and more Chinese companies to invest in the region.     On the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, Wu said the event is a new bright spot in China-Italy cooperation. Noting that the Shanghai World Expo is yet another global event in China after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Wu said the Chinese government and the local government of Shanghai have received assistance from Italy and other members of the international community in preparing for the event.     Wu expressed the belief that the Shanghai World Expo will leave a wonderful record on the history of the event.     Milan has won the bid to host the 2015 World Expo. It has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Shanghai on staging the World Expo.     Wu hopes that the two sides could utilize this platform to expand exchanges and cooperation so as to add new vigor to China-Italy relations.     Formiconi expressed the willingness to actively participate in the Shanghai World Expo, which he regards as an important area of cooperation between the two sides. He hopes to learn the experience of Shanghai in hosting the World Expo.

URUMQI, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The violence-torn Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is plodding on the road to recovery amid vigilance one week after the violence in its capital city of Urumqi that left 184 people dead and 1,680 injured.     Police with riot gears were inspecting checkpoints, combing coaches for runaway suspects involved in the deadly violence.     Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said in his tour to the autonomous region on Sunday that to maintain social stability is the top concern of the livelihood of the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang for the time being.     The regional government chairman Nur Berkri said in a televised speech Sunday afternoon that the number of people injured in violence on July 5 had risen to 1,680.     Altogether 216 of the 939 hospitalized are seriously injured and 74 injured fatally, he said.     An oil tank explosion occurred at a chemical plant in Urumqi Sunday morning. Police ruled out the possibility of intentional sabotage after on-the-spot investigation but said the reason of the explosion needs further investigation.     At the suburb of Aksu City, people who flocked into the Uygur bazaar, Toksun, as the local residents called it, said they had felt something different.     "There are much fewer people compared with what it was before the violence," said Tunxunjiang Tuohuniyazi, a local Uygur who were visiting the bazaar with his wife.     "On my way here, I saw a lot of policemen," he said. "But I understand it. The heavy security helps ensure our safety."     The bazaar, which boasts 3,000 stands, only saw a little more than 500 of them in business on Sunday.     Tuniyazi Yiming, a vender busy baking dumplings, said his turnover halved with number of the bazaar visitors on such a sharp decline.     The same bleak business picture could be seen in the border city of Kashgar in southern Xinjiang, where markets and bazaars reported only a few visitors.     Also hurt is the the region's tourism. Sources with the Urumqi Municipal government told Xinhua that because of the riot, 1,184 tour groups had cancelled their plans to visit the city as of Sunday.     They involved 74,218 travelers, including 10,731 tourists from overseas.     Railway authorities said Sunday that situation in the Urumqi's train terminal is normal.     The passenger volume was reported at 21,000 persons at the station on Sunday, 4,000 fewer than Saturday.     "There are no so-called 'waves of refugees' and ticket scalpers reported by some overseas journalists in the train terminal," said Chen Kai, vice chief of the South Train Station of Urumqi.     In Urumqi, thousands of youngsters have expressed their willingness to serve the city by signing up to be volunteers.     "Two days after the hotline was launched, we have received more than 1,600 calls," said Yu Yinglong, head of the Volunteer Association in Urumqi. "They volunteered to serve in hospitals and to give psychological help to those who were traumatized in the violence."     "The Koran teaches us that Muslims should be united. It teaches us to live in harmony with non-Muslims as well. UNITED NATIONS, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China voiced its support for the resumption of the Middle East peace process on Monday, calling upon all the parties concerned to create an environment conducive to the Middle East peace talks.     The statement came as Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking at an open Security Council meeting on behalf of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. "At present, the situation in the Middle East is at a very critical stage," Zhang said. "We hope that parties concerned will stay firm to their conviction of resolving the issue through political negotiations, refrain from moves that may ruin mutual trust and reconciliation so as to create the condition for resumptions of negotiation," Zhang said. On the contrary, the cycle of violence will only exacerbate hatred," he said.     He said the Security Council Resolution 1860 is the result of arduous efforts by all the parties concerned, and brought about the Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire and created conditions for resumption of Middle East peace process. The resolution, adopted by the Security Council in January, called for mutually respected and last cease-fire in the Middle East following Israel's 22-day military offensive in the Gaza Strip.     It is hoped that the Resolution 1860 could be implemented comprehensively and effectively, said the ambassador.     "At the center of the Middle East problem is the Palestine issue," Zhang said. "The ultimate way out for the Palestinian issue is the realization of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace."     Therefore, the Chinese ambassador called on parties concerned to continue to act in the spirit enshrined in relevant UN resolutions and adhere to the principle of "the Land for Peace" and "the two-state solution," saying that they should push for the earlier achievement of reconciliation between Israel and Palestine, the establishment of an independent state of Palestine and the peaceful coexistence between Arabs and Jews.     The realization of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East depends on the settlement of all relevant issues in the region, he said.     Describing both the Syria-Israel talks and the Lebanon-Israel negotiations as "important components of the Middle-East peace process," Zhang called for a holistic approach to promote such talks.     Meanwhile, he said other hot-spot issues in the region should also be "properly addressed so as to create a favorable environment for the peace process."     On the other hand, "the Middle East peace process cannot be achieved without the help and support of the international community," Zhang said, calling on the international community to continue to support the development of Palestine and immediately implement its commitment to the reconstruction in Gaza.     "Parties concerned should uphold just and strengthen the mediation efforts and at the same time consider the establishment of a broadly-represented, balanced and effective multilateral mechanism which will provide oversight and support for the peace process in the Middle East," Zhang said.     Zhang said China supports the efforts of the Quartet, a diplomatic group of the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States in search of the Middle East peace, and Russia's proposal to hold an international conference on Middle East in Moscow.     The open council meeting, chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov whose country holds the rotating presidency of the 15-nation council this month, came at a time when the new Israeli government was headed by hawkish Prime Minister Benjam Netanyahu.     Netanyhu has so far refused to publicly endorse the creation of an independent Palestine state, the key element of an international plan to bring about a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.     Also present at the open debate are UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, British Foreign Minister David Miliband, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and UN ambassadors from other Council members.     Israel, Palestine and Arab states were not invited to address the meeting.

HELSINKI, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Friday outlined guidelines for boosting Sino-Finnish relations in political, economic and social fields.     Politically, top leaders and senior officials of China and Finland should continue to frequently visit each other to improve the mechanism for bilateral cooperation, said Li while meeting with Finnish President Tarja Halonen. Economically, the two countries should make good use of their respective competitive advantages which compliment each other to deepen their pragmatic cooperation in business, environment, energy and other fields, he said.     Socially, China and Finland should promote exchanges in culture, education, health, tourism and other fields to build a stronger social base for their bilateral relations, he added. BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday honored dozens of military organizations and individuals for their contribution to the nation's quake relief or scientific research work.     President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Hu Jintao signed a decree awarding merits to 15 organizations and 28 individuals with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).     Three classes of merits were meted out in accordance with the receivers' contribution.     Ten units and individuals were cited for their relief efforts after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern China on May 12 last year, two for "remarkable troop building," five for "achievements in major scientific experiments," two for artist creations and the rest for achievements in scientific researches, according to the decree.     In a separate decree signed by Hu, four other soldiers and officers were awarded honorable titles as being "model examples" for their peers.     One of them, Meng Xiangbin, was given the honor posthumously as he was drowned while trying to save a suicidal woman from a river in eastern Zhejiang Province in 2007.
