(KGTV) — San Diego's airport is considered the best in the nation, according to a recent study released by travel website The Points Guy.San Diego International Airport took the top spot on the website's annual "Best and Worst US Airports" analysis of the 50 busiest airports in America. Looking at delay times, commute, and amenities, the website considered San Diego the best thanks to its, "healthy dose of amenities, superior record of on-time flights and incredibly convenient location."San Diego Airport's 30-plus dining options, including favorites like Stone Brewing, Pannikin Coffee & Tea, and Phil's BBQ, boosted the location past last year's winner, Phoenix Sky Harbor, which was hit with a runway closing between January and February last year.RELATED: UC San Diego ranks among the best universities in the U.S., worldAccording to the FAA's latest data from 2017, San Diego International's average gate arrival delay was 3.7 minutes over an average of 807 flights in and out of the airport daily. In 2016, the FAA held San Diego as the 27th busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic with more than 20.7 million.Upon the ranking, San Diego Airport tweeted, "We’re thrilled to be ranked No. 1 U.S. Airport by [The Points Guy]! As excited as we are, we know there's work to be done on improving our Terminal 1 experience. That’s why we've started moving forward with plans to replace Terminal 1."Terminal 1 has been a stickler for many who travel through the region. The entry way to San Diego, opened in 1967, served more than 12 million travelers last year, the airport says.RELATED: Scripps La Jolla Hospitals listed as best in San Diego regionThe airport's planned revamp of Terminal 1 includes demolishing the current terminal and replacing it with a new three-level facility with 30 gates and possible commercial development, according to the airport's 2018 drafted plans.Portland International, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, and Sacramento International airports rounded our the top five in the list.Among the worst airports were Florida's Southwest Florida International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, and Orlando International airports; Detroit Metropolitan Wayne, and Chicago Midway airports. 2250

(SAN DIEGO) KGTV -- New records released show police responded to the home of the man that injured two police officers dozens of times in the past. On June 23rd, police responded to a disturbance call at the Rolando Court condo. When they smelled smoke, they called firefighters to the scene. Officers knocked on the front door for more than 20 minutes but received no response, officials said. Firefighters forced entry into the home. That’s when firefighters and officers were met with gunfire. Two officers were shot. The man inside the condo, Joe Darwish, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.Following the June 23rd shooting, Team 10 requested details regarding the number of times police responded to Darwish's address, but they were not released until after the investigation was over. The officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.Documents show that since 2013, there were 31 calls for service to Darwish's address before the night of the shooting. More than half were 5150 calls, where officers checked on the individual’s mental wellbeing. Nine calls were for disturbances, some with violence. In February 2016, there was one call listed as “CCCC,” which police say describes a chronic caller to the department. The records also revealed police were at the home eight days before the shooting for another disturbance call with potential violence. Darwish did have a criminal history and was not supposed to own any weapons. 1443

(KGTV) - Online travel site TripAdvisor will no longer sell tickets to attractions that breed or buy dolphins and whales, including SeaWorld, company officials said Wednesday. TripAdvisor and its subsidiary Viator planned to phase out the tickets over the next few months. The new policy will not apply to seaside sanctuaries that provide care to cetaceans already in captivity, TripAdvisor officials said. “We believe the current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity should be the last, and we look forward to seeing this position adopted more widely throughout the travel industry,” said TripAdvisor Experiences and Rentals president Dermot Halpin. “TripAdvisor is on the right side of history,” said Dr. Naomi Rose, Marine Mammal Scientist, Animal Welfare Institute, in a release issued by the travel company. “Whales and dolphins cannot thrive in captivity and enlightened tourists no longer tolerate exploiting these intelligent and socially complex marine predators for human entertainment.” SeaWorld issued a statement in response to TripAdvisor’s decision. “We are disappointed by TripAdvisor’s new position that ignores the educational value and conservation mission of professionally accredited zoos and aquariums. SeaWorld believes deeply in the mission of these organizations. As a member of World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), certified by American Humane, and accredited by Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) and Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA), as well as numerous other certifications and accreditations from leading accrediting bodies, SeaWorld maintains the highest standards of care for all animals, including cetaceans. And regardless of TripAdvisor’s position, SeaWorld will continue to advance education and animal conservation efforts along with our millions of supporters, professional scientists and other science based organizations around the world.” said Dr. Chris Dold, SeaWorld’s Chief Zoological Officer. SeaWorld officials also referred to the support of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a nonprofit accrediting body active in 12 countries. “TripAdvisor is letting voices of a radical minority dictate corporate policy, rather than listening to the voices and preferences of their customers,” said AZA president Dan Ashe. “Revenue generated at AZA facilities that care for dolphins and whales directly supports millions of dollars in animal welfare research, global conservation efforts, and critical rescue and rehabilitation activities, not the capture of cetaceans from the wild.” TripAdvisor created an animal welfare policy in 2016, banning ticket sales for experiences putting travelers into physical contact with captive wild animals, such as elephant rides. In 2018, the policy also expanded to what TripAdvisor described as “demeaning animal shows and performances.” 2878

(KGTV) -- Knit two, purl two. In this story that is Positively San Diego we meet an east county woman who has used that stitch countless times to spread warmth to those who need it the most."By the way, I'm knitting as you're talking to me," said Spring Valley resident Karen De Vos as our Zoom interview got underway.I responded, "I love it!"As she began to list the many places where knitting comes naturally to her, "When I'm watching TV, when I'm in the car, if I'm in a doctor's office, or if I'm in a movie theatre."De Vos said she learned the craft when she was 9 from her mother. And over the years she's created keepsakes like Christmas stockings for family and friends."Then the Santa Claus on one side," said De Vos, showing off one of her stockings, "And then the reindeer and then the trees and then comes the foot."De Vos enjoyed the creativity, but it took on new meaning in the early '90s when a charity drive asked her to knit hats to help the homeless stay warm."In the last three years we all know homelessness has become a terrific problem," says Devos, so, as the years have gone on since I've been knitting, I sort of felt maybe I was doing a better calling then I had ever done before."For some 30 years now, de Vos has been knitting 60-plus hats a year for those in need, sticking with the same pattern while mixing up the colors. And as she points out, they're very stretchy, so one size fits all. She dons one of the hats to make the point."Some people like to wear the flap all the way down, but I think it looks cuter with the flap up."The former middle school teacher and librarian says it's her way of giving back. Her hats go to Father Joe's Villages and the "Voices of our City Choir," famed for showcasing the singing of San Diego's unsheltered."When you get to be my age there aren't too many active things you can go out and do, you know, for charity purposes. But at least I can sit without any movement or anything and create something that will go for good," De Vos said. And as she has knitted some 2,000 hats and continues to knit through this interview, she mentions, "I even can knit when I'm reading too."Karen De Vos lives with her husband of more than 60-years at a senior living community in Spring Valley. She says he's very supportive. Also, she says her efforts bring out a spirit of generosity in others has she's been gifted quite a bit of yarn from friends and businesses. If you're wondering, each hat takes about 3 hours to knit. 2489

(KGTV) -- The California Department of Education on Monday released guidance for the safe reopening of all state schools.State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and other CDE leaders unveiled a guidance document that will serve as a road map of recommendations for schools as they work with local public health officials on steps to reopen. All schools in the state closed in March due to stay-at-home orders protecting against the spread of COVID-19. Reopening dates have not yet been set.The document addresses topics such as face coverings, physical distancing, symptom screenings and distance learning. Some of the suggestions include:Students should use cloth face coverings, especially in circumstances when physical distancing cannot be maintained. Face coverings should be worn while waiting to enter the school campus; while on school grounds (except when eating or drinking); while leaving school; while on a school bus.In classrooms, desks are to be a minimum of 6 feet apart and desks should be arranged in a way that minimizes face-to-face contact. All staff should wear face coverings. Teachers could use face shields, which enable students to see their faces and to avoid potential barriers to phonological instruction. The CDE also laid out suggested scheduling models, including:Two-day rotation: Students report to school on two designated days based on grade level for in-person instruction.Alternate week rotation: Half of the student population attends in-person learning opportunities four full days per week while the other half is engaged in distance learning opportunities.Looping structure: Students and teachers will remain together for multiple grade levels (TK-8).Staggered scheduling: Start and dismissal times would be staggered based on grade level.Click here to view the department's full guidelinesThurmond said, “We have to prepare for the likelihood that we will have to return to distance learning.”Jean Marie Arce, whose son will be a sophomore at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, told 10News she is concerned for working and single parents when it comes to dealing with in-class learning versus distance learning for their children.“It’s so much easier for him just to be in school than trying to do the online thing,” Arce said.Arce also had concerns on how physical distancing would work once students are allowed to return to campus.“These classrooms are 20-plus kids. How are you going to get these classrooms to fill 20-plus kids at a six-food distance?” Arce wondered. Each school district will be responsible for how to reopen schools, and state officials hope the guidelines will help districts determine their own approach to reopening.“Right now is a critical time for school districts to really begin to analyze their campus, footprints of their campus, and to make determinations about how many students can be safely taught in an in-campus and in-class instruction way,” Thurmond said.“A lot of planning is going to have to take place in order for this to happen, and I think if they’re going to do this, they need to start now if they want to open up in the fall,” Arce said. 3151
