SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego leaders say they are working to help prepare the county's homeless population to protect themselves from the coronavirus.An outreach team has been busy installing hand washing stations across San Diego to address the virus concerns as it affects those experiencing homelessness. Team members have been helping individuals protect themselves against the virus by passing out hygiene kits that include hand sanitizer, info on symptoms, water, soap, tissues, and hand wipes.Nurses have also started to visit San Diego shelters to help prepare those staying there, especially those suffering from underlying medical conditions or who are older. Leaders say nurses are prepared to be on site to assist with screening potential patients and identify potential housing options if they need to be moved for care. Potential options include motels, government buidlings or facilities, or tents, according to leaders.According to the county, medical professionals are on high alert for any possible local outbreak. Currently, one person has been confirmed to have coronavirus. That patient is said to be doing well. Leaders added that there is no evidence of "community-based transmission" in San Diego.Those who are testing in San Diego County must do so through a primary doctor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego area fire agencies are boosting staffing levels ahead of what may be the worst Santa Ana wind event this year. The intense weather situation, due to start Tuesday night and last through Thursday, has crews working extra shifts. Cal Fire San Diego has nearly all of its 500 firefighters on duty to staff equipment and fill support roles, an agency spokesperson said on behalf of Chief Tony Mecham. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsAlthough the agency is supporting other fires across California, the Regional Coordination Center in Riverside has limited the number of resources sent out of Southern California, Cal Fire reported. Cal Fire also brought 150 out-of-state fire engines to California. San Diego County has an additional 15 fire engines, five patrols, six water tenders, and support elements including a Cal Fire communications unit. The California Office of Emergency Services also announced Tuesday it was coordinating to pre-position fire equipment and personnel ahead of Santa Ana conditions. Two strike teams consisting of five engines are staged in San Diego County, along with a helicopter. The San Diego Fire-Rescue department said staffing would be increased Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. due to the wind event.Two firefighting helicopters are available around the clock, according to spokesperson Mónica Mu?oz. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue crews rescued a paraglider who crashed into a dangerous Torrey Pines bluff Friday.SDFD crews arrived at the site of the crash at around 1 p.m. Sky10 footage showed the person clinging to the cliff, wrapped in the wreckage of a broken glider, just over a section of Blacks Beach.Lt. Rich Stropky says the man was in training to become a paragliding pilot. He apparently attempted to make a left hand turn away from the bluff but lost control near Saddle Back ridge, said Stropky.RELATED: Cliff, air rescue numbers on rise in San Diego CountyCrews were able to airlift the person from the cliffside just after 2 p.m. He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital for his injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego police are looking for a man accused of committing a lewd act in the Morena neighborhood.The incident happened on Aug. 12, shortly before 4:30 p.m. A home security camera caught the man stopping on the sidewalk and engaging in the lewd act as he crept near a woman that was gardening outside her home.Police say the woman had her back turned to the man, and she never knew he was there."He was within maybe four or five feet at the time," the woman's husband, Jeremy Pritchett, said. "That's frightening about the situation, someone can creep up to you within 4 feet, and you have no idea."A car drove by, and Pritchett said it scared the man away. Pritchett was home at the time but didn't know what had happened until a few minutes after the man took off. He found out after looking through his security camera footage.San Diego police officers say they have identified the man in the video, and they are going to issue a warrant for his arrest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria was officially sworn in Thursday, marking a historic moment for America's eighth largest city. "Today, I stand in front of you as the first person of person of color and LGTBQ person to ascend to our city's highest office," Gloria said in a virtual ceremony. Gloria and five new council members were sworn in during a virtual ceremony Thursday due to the COVID 19 outbreak. Gloria is a Democrat, as are the five new councilmembers also sworn in. The Democrats now have an 8 to 1 advantage on the City Council. But even if there is political harmony, the challenges facing the city are grand.They are taking over with the region in a mandatory stay at home order due to the virus. Small businesses are shuttering, unemployment is near 8 percent, and the city could face a 4 million dollar budget shortfall next fiscal year."There are some things that people say you shouldn't touch, such as police, fire that type of thing, but if this continues on for another year, this COVID, who knows what the city budget is going to look like," said political analyst John Dadian.But in a brief speech, Gloria expressed confidence in getting San Diego back on its feet."We will be rolling out an aggressive strategy to address the worsening public health crisis in COVID-19, the economic crisis that is impacting San Diego's families, small businesses and our city budget, the housing and homelessness crisis that has become even more dire," Gloria said.
