SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Legion Major League Rugby team announced Tuesday that it released recently signed player Steffon Armitage in the wake of his conviction for sexually assaulting a woman in France.On Monday, a French court found Armitage guilty of groping a woman's breasts outside a bar last year in the town of Pau, where he was playing at the time of the assault. Armitage, 34, admitted he had also been drinking heavily that night.The court handed Armitage a suspended prison sentence and ordered him to compensate the victim with 5,000 euros, roughly ,500 in U.S. dollars.The Legion signed Armitage in July. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's Vector Control Program reminded residents Friday to take precautions against ticks throughout the winter season.Winter is tick season in San Diego County and residents are advised to wear insect repellant and long sleeves and pants when hiking and camping. Ticks are unlikely to be found in the county's metropolitan areas but they can and do appear in nature and back-country areas, according to the county.Ticks spread several diseases, including Lyme disease, tularemia and spotted fever."Our crews are already finding a lot of ticks out there," said Chris Conlan, a supervising vector ecologist for the county. "And even though tick-related diseases are pretty rare in San Diego, nobody wants to be bitten, or have their kids or pets bitten."Residents are advised to stay on designated hiking paths and avoid touching grass, brush and wild rodents. Ticks can also latch onto clothing and bite a host well after leaving a hiking trail or camping area. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The remaining sailors from the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt who stayed ashore in Guam following a COVID-19 outbreak aboard the carrier will fly back to the United States starting Friday, according to the Navy.The carrier resumed its scheduled deployment in the Indo-Pacific last Thursday, though a few hundred sailors remained in Guam to continue receiving medical care. The Navy says those service members will take military flights to the U.S., where they will be required to complete a two-week "restriction-of- movement sequester" either at home or at facilities on base at their home station.The ship originally departed San Diego on Jan. 17 for a deployment, but was diverted to Guam on March 27 when the COVID-19 outbreak took hold, ultimately infecting more than 1,100 sailors, and killing one, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Charles Thacker, 41.The ship's commanding officer, Capt. Brett Crozier, made a publicized plea for assistance from Navy leadership in a letter that was leaked to the press, leading to his removal from command of the ship.While many have called for his reinstatement, the Navy has stated that its investigation into the circumstances behind the letter's leak is ongoing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The North County Transit District will temporarily reduce service for its Coaster commuter trains starting Monday until further notice amid a drop in ridership tied to the coronavirus outbreak.Weekday train service will be reduced by about 50%, particularly around the noon hour, when several northbound and southbound trains will be suspended.
