The Florida red tide can be found in bays and estuaries but not in freshwater systems such as lakes and rivers. Because K. brevis cannot tolerate low-salinity waters for very long, blooms usually remain in salty coastal waters and do not penetrate upper reaches of estuaries. However, other harmful algae, including cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), typically bloom in freshwater lakes and rivers. Can we predict where a red tide will occur? 450
The lawsuit names the Catholic Diocese of San Diego and Father Anthony Edward Rodrigue. The legal action is being filed on behalf of several people who claim they were victimized by Rodrigue “but were unable to file a civil lawsuit under California’s previous statute of limitation law.”Rodrigue spent time at 10 different parishes in San Diego, Imperial, and San Bernardino counties during his 29-year priesthood career. Attorneys, citing a 1997 San Bernardino County sheriff’s report, said Rodrigue “admitted to sexually abusing four or five boys each year” during his career. The diocese issued a statement reading:"Former San Diego and San Bernardino priest Anthony Rodrigue was a vicious sexual predator active in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s who rightfully was sent to prison for his crimes. Our hearts and prayers and deepest apologies go out to his victims and all victims of clergy sex abuse.Regardless of the legal issues involved, we have a moral obligation to provide help to any victim-survivor of that abuse and we would urge their attorney to contact us so that counseling can be arranged at our expense. There are no prior conditions and the offer of counseling stands whether or not they sue the diocese. We would also invite them to participate in the Independent Compensation Program [californiadiocesesicp.com] established this fall as an additional avenue they can use to pursue their legal claims. There are no costs or obligation to victims, and the bilingual process is confidential. If they go through the compensation program and reject the compensation offer they receive, they have not given up their right to pursue their claim in the courts. In most cases, a qualifying victim-survivor will receive an offer within 90 days of their claim being finalized. 1780
The Moore campaign event at the Alabama Republican Party headquarters in Birmingham came as the state Republican Party's steering committee convened an emergency meeting in the same city and rumblings increased about alternative paths for the party, including mounting a write-in campaign for the Senate seat Moore is running for. 330

The plane crashed into the Winter Haven home around 1 p.m. on Saturday. There were two people on board, a pilot and a trainee student. The pilot, 64-year-old James Wagner of Lakeland, was killed in the crash. The trainee, 33-year-old Timothy Sheehy of Montana, walked away with only minor injuries, according to the sheriff's office. It's unclear at this time who was piloting the plane.“It was a day of miracles because Timothy Sheehy, the trainee pilot, actually walked out of the crash, if you can believe that," Judd said. "Walked out of the crash, and was wandering around when Winter Haven firefighters arrived.”Judd said the two men were flying with the goal to simulate engine failure training. It's unknown if they were simulating engine failure at the time of the crash, Judd said. They took off from Winter Have Airport then the aircraft lost power. The 17-year-old girl who was in a bedroom the plane crashed through was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries. “Not only was she in the bedroom that the plane crashed into, but she was pinned and entrapped in the bedroom,” Judd said. The teenager's brother, who was in a neighboring room, tried to free her but was unable to, according to Judd. She was later freed by Winter Haven firefighters. The mother of the teenager was also in the home at the time, and three children were playing in the driveway. They were not injured. At this time, the plane is still stuck in the home and is leaking fuel, according to Judd. Firefighters will stay on scene until it's considered safe. Judd said the plane will be removed with a crane in a few days, but it will be left where it is until NTSB and the FAA arrive to investigate. First responders were on the scene within five minutes of the call, the Director of Public Safety in Winter Haven Charlie Bird said. Story developing, refresh for updates.
