HARARE, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday called on the West to lift sanctions they imposed on Zimbabwe while Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe applauded the Asian giant for its continued political and economic support.Addressing journalists soon after meeting Zimbabwe President Mugabe, Yang, who is on a two-day visit, said Zimbabweans and other African people have a right to choose their own development path."We believe there should be the lifting of sanctions by certain countries. We think that is the voice of the Zimbabwean people and that is also the view of all the parties concerned here in Zimbabwe," Yang said, adding that no country has a right to dictate to another."We believe all nations should respect each others sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said."China believes that Africans have the right to choose their own way of development as they are the masters of the African continent. All others are just guests," he said.Yang said that China appreciates assistance from Africa and would also continue to reciprocate the support.Addressing the Chinese delegation earlier, Zimbabwean President Mugabe said the West continues to persecute Zimbabwe through sanctions for the decision the county took to empower its people through land.He said the imposition of sanctions was despite the fact that Zimbabwe and Britain had agreed that the former would redistribute the land while the latter would compensate affected farmers."The Western countries have imposed sanctions on us for taking our land although we had discussed this in 1979. That is what started the problem," Mugabe said.Mugabe said Britain had since turned to political reasons such as human rights, democracy and rule of law to justify continued sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe. He applauded continued cooperation between China and Zimbabwe which dates back to the struggle for independence.Meanwhile, China extended a 50 million yuan (7.5 million U.S. dollars) grant to Zimbabwe.Yang and his Zimbabwean counterpart Simbarashe Mumbengegwi signed the agreement on behalf of their countries. In his meeting with Mumbengegwi, Yang who described Zimbabwe as a "brother" said the two countries had identified areas for further cooperation such as infrastructure, agriculture, water conversation and personnel training.

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's just concluded trip to Japan, during which he attended the fourth China-Japan-South Korea summit, has significantly boosted tripartite cooperation and regional peace and stability, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Sunday.Yang, who accompanied Wen during his visit on Saturday and Sunday, told reporters that the two-day trip has further boosted cooperation in East Asia, consolidated popular support for China-Japan friendship, enriched the contents of China-Japan and China-South Korea partnerships, and is of great and profound significance for maintaining regional peace, stability and prosperity.Yang said the trip was practical, effective, productive and a complete success.DEEPENING TRILATERAL COOPERATIONThe trip has deepened trilateral practical cooperation in various fields, Yang said.Wen, at the trilateral summit held in Tokyo on Sunday and attended by Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, put forward a seven-point proposal for the three countries to widen cooperation.First, efforts should be made to support Japan's post-quake reconstruction.Second, the three countries should attach great importance to nuclear safety and strictly implement the consensus reached.Third, the three countries should promote practical cooperation on disaster prevention and reduction.Fourth, they should promote liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment among them, push forward integration of regional economy, and try to start negotiations on a tripartite free trade zone next year.Fifth, they should vigorously develop renewable energy and popularize energy-saving technology.Sixth, they should speed up construction of demonstration bases for circular economy in order to promote rational use of resources, protect the environment and realize sustainable development.Seventh, they should boost people-to-people and cultural exchanges.Premier Wen's proposal was applauded by Japanese Prime Minister Kan and South Korean President Lee.The three leaders, in a joint declaration issued after the summit, said they would deepen the future-oriented comprehensive cooperative partnership among the three countries. They also agreed to cooperate on disaster management, nuclear safety, economic growth, sustainable development and cultural affairs.

LOS ANGELES, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The moon will move closer to Earth than it has been in more than 18 years Saturday night, space. com reported on Friday. On Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (1900 MGT) , the "supermoon", as dubbed by some observers, will arrive at its closest point to the Earth in 2011: a distance of 221,565 miles ( 356,575 kilometers) away, and only 50 minutes earlier, the moon will officially be full, the report said.At its peak, the supermoon may appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons (when the moon is at its farthest from Earth), weather permitting, said the report.Yet to the casual observer, it may be hard to tell the difference, according to the report.Scientists say it is a fluke of orbital mechanics that brings the moon closer to Earth. The supermoon will not cause natural disasters, such as the Japan earthquake, NASA scientists say.In December 2008, there was a near-supermoon when the moon turned full four hours away from its perigee - the point in its orbit that is closest to Earth. But this month, the full moon and perigee are just under one hour apart, promising spectacular views, depending on local conditions, the report said.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft Corp. on Monday said it will buy Internet communications company Skype for 8.5 billion U.S. dollars in cash, a bold move for the software giant to explore new business opportunities."Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement."Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world," he added.Microsoft said it has agreed to buy Skype from the investor group led by Silver Lake, and the deal has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies.Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer. The Skype deal ranks one of the biggest purchase in the 36-year history of Microsoft, which is struggling to compete in the fields of Internet and mobile phones beyond its dominance on personal computer software market.Founded in 2003 and based in Luxembourg, Skype offers a software application that allows users to make free or cheap phone calls and chats over the Internet with additional features including instant messaging and video conferencing.Numbers showed that Skype's 170 million connected users made over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010.Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009.In a press release announcing the acquisition, Microsoft noted that the deal will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, generating significant new business and revenue opportunities, and enhancing its existing offerings of real-time communications products and services.Microsoft said Skype will support its devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and it will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms. The acquisition is expected to obtain all required regulatory clearances within this calendar year, Microsoft said.
