SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of San Diego City College students are hoping their fundraising efforts will help them get to a national STEM conference in Hawaii later this year. The students are a part of the club called SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science), a chapter of a larger, national organization. The club works with students K-12 to teach them about the career opportunities in STEM. The conference offers research opportunities, tips to improve networking skills and workshops about cutting-edge research. SACNAS takes place in October of 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men who took part in a fatal Pacific Beach home invasion that resulted in the shotgun slaying of a resident were sentenced Friday to state prison terms.Carlos Yslas, 25, and Pedro Ramirez, 28, were sentenced Friday for their roles in the death of 44-year-old MarcAnthony Mendivil, who was shot in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue on Dec. 29, 2018.Mendivil was living at the home of another defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, at the time of his death and was killed in what court documents describe as a forcible eviction gone wrong.Yslas, who was the gunman in the incident, was sentenced to 27 years in state prison, based on his plea to a voluntary manslaughter charge. Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati said Yslas was released from prison on a residential burglary conviction about a week prior to the shooting.RELATED: Three men plead guilty to Pacific Beach shotgun slayingRamirez was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday, while co- defendant Freddy Sosa, 38, was sentenced last year to eight years in prison. Weinberger was sentenced to three years earlier this week.Sosa pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, while Weinberger pleaded to an assault with a firearm charge.According to court documents, Sosa had previously lived at the home, but was kicked out by Weinberger following a dispute. Mendivil then moved in, but soon after, Weinberger contacted Sosa asking him for help in removing Mendivil from the home for unspecified reasons, investigators were told.Weinberger told police he was drugged on the night of Mendivil's killing and forced to withdraw cash from his bank to pay Yslas and Ramirez, who were brought in to assist in forcibly removing Mendivil from the home, court documents state. However, in the process of forcing Mendivil out, Yslas shot Mendivil twice. According to defense attorney Kristen Haden, Yslas believed the victim was reaching for a weapon, which later turned out to be a knife beneath his mattress.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting, San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs said. He died at a hospital about 45 minutes later, Dobbs said.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged last February for their roles in the homicide. 2430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver died Wednesday following a two-car crash at what a Clairemont resident describes as a known trouble spot for traffic. The crash happened about 1 p.m. at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Chateau Drive, south of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. “Hit so hard it sounded like an explosion,” said Bonnie Alexander, who has lived in a home at the intersection for some 40 years. RELATED: Neighbors want help after crashes at dangerous intersection in El CajonAlexander ran outside to help, first stopping to check on the driver of the black Tesla that hit her brick retaining wall. “We went to the other to car, to that driver; he took his last breath. He’s no longer with us,” said Alexander. The man's identity was not immediately released.Alexander’s home has been struck by cars five times. She’s hoping to get a guardrail at the location. RELATED: Water from broken pipe leads to rollover crash on San Diego freeway“There’s so many speeders they slingshot right through the intersection. They think they can beat it and end up t-boning someone,” Alexander says of the stoplight on Genesee. There was no word on what caused the crash. 1168

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A coalition of some of San Diego's biggest business and labor groups wants the city to enact Measure C, the hotel-tax increase that did not generate the necessary support during the March primary. The measure would have raised the city's hotel tax by as much as 3.25% to pay for expanding the convention center, adding services for the homeless, and funding road repair. The measure failed to get the two-thirds vote California law requires for many tax increases. "Sixty-five percent of the people voted for it, that's an overwhelming majority of the voters," said Betsy Brennan, CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, a member of the coalition. "To me that speaks to the need and the desire for people to want to support this measure."The measure may, however, have new life. Two recent court cases involving Upland and San Francisco are giving supporters hope that Measure C can be enacted with a 50-percent plus one majority. It's because Measure C was a citizens' initiative, and there is now a legal precedent that tax increases that got to the ballot through signature drives can pass with a simple majority. “Measure C was overwhelmingly supported by San Diego voters in March, and we believe the will of the people — both the voters and the citizens who placed Measure C on the ballot — should be enacted," said a statement from the coalition, attributed to executives from the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Authority and San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council. "Reducing homelessness, repairing roads and investing in our local economy are just as important as it was in March, if not more so. We believe in this cause and will continue to pursue Measure C’s implementation.”The coalition says it will continue to pursue Measure C's implementation. That could involve suing the city over the measure. The City Council itself could take action but discussed it behind closed doors last week without taking any action. Others, however, say enacting Measure C would send the wrong message to voters, who entered the polls March 3 understanding the proposition needs a two-thirds vote. "There are people out there who say my vote doesn't matter. Changing the goalposts after the election would prove that to be true," said Christopher Rice Wilson, associate director at Alliance San Diego, a community empowerment organization that did not take a position on Measure C. The final vote on Measure C was 239,024 in favor, versus 127,349 opposed. 2487
