MIAMI, Florida — The pedestrian bridge under construction near Florida International University was supposed to enhance safety — letting walkers and cyclists cross a busy eight-lane street with less worry after a vehicle last year struck and killed an FIU student.Instead, it collapsed Thursday, months before it was to open, crushing cars below, killing at least six people and leaving investigators with the difficult task of trying to figure out why it happened and who might be held responsible."If anybody's done anything wrong, we'll hold them accountable," Florida Gov. Rick Scott said. 606

MICHIGAN — Six Detroit-area doctors were charged with fraudulent health care billing and unlawful prescribing of opioids, according to a federal indictment. The defendants, identified as Rajendra Bothra, Eric Backos, Gainu Edu, David Lewis, Christopher Russo and Ronald Kufner, each played different roles at different times, the indictment said. Over the course of the conspiracy, the defendants allegedly submitted claims for more than 2.5 million to Medicare, 2.6 million to Medicaid and .2 million to Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan for services and equipment that was medically unnecessary, not eligible for reimbursement and/or not provided as represented.According to the indictment, the defendants issued more than 13,217,987 dosage units of Schedule II opioids, including Oxycontin, Percocet and Vicodin. The scheme, beginning in January 2013, was operated at three clinics: The Pain Center located in Eastpointe and Warren and the Interventional Pain Center in Warren. All clinics were owned and operated by Bothra. All six doctors were charged with health-care fraud conspiracy, a 10-year felony.View the full indictment below:Six Detroit doctors charged in opioid scheme - Indictment by WXYZ-TV Channel 7 Detroit on Scribd 1260

MEXICO CITY (AP) — There were two notable holdouts among the world leaders who rushed to congratulate Joe Biden on his victory in the U.S. elections: the leaders of Latin America’s two biggest countries, both of whom have been seen as friendly to President Donald Trump. President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil is sometimes dubbed “the Trump of the Tropics” for his populist, off-the-cuff style, and he's kept silent on Trump’s loss. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador refused to congratulate Biden thus far, saying he would wait until legal challenges are resolved. While their motives may be quite different, both leaders faced criticism at home for their stance. 679

Meijer is extending its 15 percent teacher discount on classroom essentials – it will now be available for the entire 2020-2021 school year.Additionally, the discount can now be applied to face masks and hand sanitizers."There are so many uncertainties as teachers head back to classes and we've heard the plans may change throughout the year, so our goal is to help them shop with confidence whenever they need to refill supplies," said Brandon Pasch, Director of Back-to-School Merchandising for Meijer, in a press release "We hope that extending the 15 percent discount for the entire school year helps reduce the stress to their pocketbooks as they continue gathering supplies for their classrooms and home offices." Other items available for the discount range from spiral notebooks and schoolroom essentials like Crayola, Elmer's Glue, Sharpies and Post-It Notes to planners and journals, and memo boards.Teachers can get the discount, in the form of a paper coupon, by presenting a current school ID at their local Meijer Customer Service desk. The coupon can only be used for purchases made in-store and some restrictions apply. For more information, visit the Meijer Back to School site. 1204

Millions of out-of-work Americans are being surprised by new information. The 0 a week they were relying on receiving through the end of July is set to end a week earlier than they expected.“That is one week less of payments than families get. That is huge. That is the difference between being able to make a car payment, make your rent, put food on the table,” said Heidi Sheirholz.Sheirholz is a former chief economist with the Department of Labor and the current senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute and explained why the CARES Act supplemental is ending so soon.“What it says in the legislation essentially is that it ends on July 31 and we all thought, you know, the end of July, but when you look at the very specific language, what it says is that the last payment will be on or before July 31,” said Sheirholz.Basically, July 31 is a Friday. State unemployment systems end their week on the weekend and pay only full weeks. So, the last full week for a payout will be on July 26. Most states had listed July 31 as the final payment on their respective state’s unemployment website and have scrambled in recent weeks to clarify and adjust the date."It’s just going to create enormous hardship,” she added. Many people will more suddenly go from about ,000 a week in total unemployment benefits, to only whatever their states’ normal unemployment benefits are, which on average is about 5. However, it’s not too late for Congress to act and extend the 0 supplemental. Economist, like Sheirholz, hope they do.“That extra 0 per week for people who are getting unemployment insurance is supporting spending of millions of people and that supports the broader economy,” said Sheirholz. “We estimate that if the 0 additional UI payment is allowed to expire this country will lose over 5 million jobs over the next year.” 1859
