SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- In celebration of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, a dedicated marker to commemorate late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was unveiled here on Sunday.The marker, which sits beside the Singapore River, was unveiled by Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is here on a three-day official visit.The marker comprises a text panel and a bronze bust of Deng commissioned by the Chinese Embassy to Singapore. BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Two years of monetary easing policies helped China's economy emerge from the global financial crisis. Now, facing a runaway inflow of hot money, fast loan growth, and escalating inflation, China could become serious about tightening regulations to achieve a "soft landing".Analysts recently said China could see more interest rate hikes in the final month of 2010 in a bid to soak up excessive liquidity and prevent a potential overheating of the economy.Further, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) Deputy Governor Hu Xiaolian said on Oct. 24 that using multiple monetary policy tools to improve liquidity management and guide the money and credit growth back to normal would be the main task for the central bank in the remainder of this year.According to data released by the central bank Friday, in October those funds outstanding for foreign exchange (FOFE) hit 525.1 billion yuan (78.37 billion U.S. dollars), the second highest monthly record in history.That is to say, PBOC issued 519 billion yuan of Renminbi in October to purchase the same amount of fresh inflow of foreign exchanges, which usually enter the nation in the form of trade surplus, foreign direct investment and short-term international speculative funds."The huge inflow of hot money is an important reason behind the sharp rise in FOFE," said Zhang Ming, a researcher with the China Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).He noted, as the European debt crisis ceased, that speculative funds have returned to the emerging markets, notably after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced the second round of its quantitative easing policy."As the massive inflow of foreign exchange increases the domestic monetary base, it has become a major impetus of a broad money supply, which could exacerbate inflation," said Liu Yuhui, also a researcher with CASS.Hefty foreign exchange inflow usually goes together with soaring inflation. China's FOFE hit a record 525.1 billion yuan in April 2008. In the same month, China's Consumer Price Index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, was up by 8.5 percent, which was unprecedented.Also, this October, the CPI rose by 4.4 percent, the highest amount in 25 months.Boosted by a massive trade surplus, the domestic monetary situation began easing in late 2008, as China's broad money supply exceeded 70 trillion yuan, surpassing the United States to become the world's largest.Li Daokui, a member of the monetary policy committee with the PBOC, said hefty money supplies posed huge risks to the nation' s banking system and, more imminently, would exacerbate the current inflation."The interest rate increase last month sent a signal that more such increases will come in the future," he said.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), China's largest oil refiner, said Friday it has suspended diesel exports to relieve shortages in the domestic market.Sinopec also said it is seeking to import 200,000 tonnes of diesel.PetroChina Co., China's largest oil producer, plans to import 200,000 tonnes of diesel. Some 35,000 tonnes of it has already arrived.Insiders said China's diesel output in the first nine months soared, prompting the two oil giants to expand exports.Sinopec attributed recent hikes in the domestic price of diesel to hoarding, seasonal factors, transport factors and energy-saving measures."The fundamental reason for the diesel shortage is the industry monopoly. Oil refiners are not keen to increase production because profit margins in the sector are relatively low," said Qi Fang, director of the Hebei Provincial Petroleum Industry Chamber of Commerce."The two oil giants operate on a planned-economy basis, resulting in an unbalanced supply-and-demand situation. Supply and demand can easily outstrip each other as government planning cannot keep pace with changes in the market," Qi said.Statistics from the General Administration of Customs show China exported 360,000 tonnes of diesel in October - only slightly lower than the 368,100 tonnes it exported in September - even as diesel shortages worsened.Diesel imports in October rose to 400,000 tonnes, up from 250,000 tonnes in September.
