EL CAJON, Calif. - The grieving mother of an accused thief filed a lawsuit Thursday against the homeowner who shot and killed her son.The civil suit identifies the homeowner as Michael Poe, and it stems from an incident in the early morning hours of March 11. Police say the homeowner woke up to the sound of glass breaking. He went outside and found someone breaking into his work truck. His mother Monika Anderson said her son had a drug problem but was doing his best to stay sober.“He was on Suboxone, a drug to stay sober, and someone had stolen his Suboxone,” Anderson said. “Although it's really hard for me to imagine my son at  31 years of age would just start stealing, but I think he was just desperate for drugs and in a lot of pain. I don’t think he deserved to die over that.”Police are investigating the incident and no criminal charges have been filed. Anderson’s attorney, Dan Gilleon, said that investigation should not affect their civil lawsuit.“The bottom line is Joe shouldn't have died and at a minimum it's because this guy didn’t act reasonably,” Gilleon said. “This is not the Wild West. If you decide to play that gunslinger role, then you’re going to end up losing everything you own.”The lawsuit does not specify an amount.“It’s like a mother’s worst nightmare,” Anderson said in tears. “I told Joe, time and time again how much he meant to me.”Scripps station KGTV in San Diego has tried to make contact with Poe several times since the shooting happened, but have not heard back.   1759

(KGTV)— Family and friends of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman gathered at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to celebrate her life. A month-long search ended in a body discovery in the Arizona desert. Her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old John Clark is accused of killing her. Kiera Bergman was the eldest daughter of the Bergman-Bragg family. Her mother Kiersten Bragg remembered Kiera had a strong personality, even before she was born.“I never forget I would always crave SpaghettiOs and that was one of her favorite things to eat,” Bragg said. She said as a teen Kiera would crave the canned spaghetti. Her family told 10News, Kiera was a spunky, playful, chunky toddler. "I always compared her to the Michelin man because she had tons of rolls everywhere,” her mother laughed. Then she became a big sister to Braydee. Kiera was silly, artistic, a talented singer, with a big heart. In his speech at the ceremony, her grandfather shared the time she spent her first ever paycheck from her part-time job on the homeless.“She bought the lady lunch. And I don't know many teenagers who will take their first paycheck and do that. So that kind of shows you what kind of girl she was,” Jim Bergman said, in tears. They said Kiera hoped to one day combine her giving personality with her dream job - America's best hairstylist.“Her dream was to at least once or twice a month, go to the homeless and do their hair and make them feel better about themselves,” Bragg said. But she was not able to live out her dream. Her boyfriend at the time, John Clark, convinced her to drop out of Cosmetology school. The two them moved to Arizona in March. Her boyfriend is accused of killing and leaving Bergman in the Arizona desert."That's what breaks my heart. (KGTV) — One firefighter was injured while battling a house fire in El Cajon Saturday.The first-alarm fire on Sycamore Lane broke out just before 12:30 p.m., according to Heartland Fire Department. One firefighter was injured during the battle and transported to a nearby hospital.Firefighters told 10News the fire may have started in the backyard, before spreading quickly to the home before it was put out. 433

Dozens fetuses and infant remains were discovered during Detroit police raids on two metro Detroit cemeteries on Wednesday as part of the state's investigation into Perry Funeral Home.According to police, the raids were prompted by a tip that there were between 100 and 125 fetuses from Perry Funeral Home being stored at the cemetery.Officers say they discovered 27 sets of infant and fetal remains that had improper or missing paperwork from Knollwood Cemetery in Canton, Michigan and 17 from Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit.In October, officers found 36 fetuses in cardboard boxes and 27 more in freezers from inside Perry Funeral Home in Detroit. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs revoked the funeral home's license and shut down the facility. Earlier that month, police also discovered 11 infant bodies in the ceiling of Cantrell Funeral Home, also in Detroit. 928

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon is working to put up a handful of so-called emergency sleeping cabins on their property.“They are different from tiny homes,” Pastor Rolland Slade said, pointing out that they don’t have running water or a kitchen. “They are essentially a shelter for someone living in homelessness to actually sleep behind a locked close door and be comfortable.”Slade says they have bathrooms on the property as well as a kitchen. They are looking to install a shower or perhaps bring them in through outside organizations.The emergency cabins are 144 sq feet, of which 96 square feet is livable space.“The village we are looking to build is going to focus on veteran women with children who are living in homelessness in El Cajon,” Slade says.Slade says they will find their clients through organizations that work with the homeless. The homes are not meant to be permanent housing, and families will be allowed to stay for 90 days.The church is working with a group called Amikas, as well as the city.El Cajon city officials have given the pilot program the green light through December 31, 2023. However, city officials say “permits are required, and the “emergency housing” must be operated by an organization experienced/proficient.”There is one cabin on the property. It is not occupied and is used as a demo. Slade hopes to get a total of six up in the next four to six months. They are working on fundraising efforts to build the cabins. 1500
