NANTONG, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The first Sino-American Dialogue on Rule of Law and Human Rights ended Sunday in Nantong, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province.     The two-day symposium was jointly organized by the China Foundation for Human Rights Development (CFHRD) and National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) of the United States.     Representatives from China and the United States exchanged views on topics of government transparency, pretrial detention, labor disputes and lawyers' role.     Prof. Jerome Cohen of the New York University School of Law said the symposium was "a good exchange" and the U.S. delegation learned more about China.     "We talked about some sensitive issues with people we didn't know before. This is a big good start," Cohen told Xinhua.     "The dialogue is a sign of increasing exchanges between non-governmental organizations," Huang Mengfu, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and CFHRD chairman, addressed the opening ceremony on Saturday.     The symposium attracted more than 30 Chinese and U.S. law professionals and scholars.

GUANGZHOU, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China is to maintain basic stability and continuity in the economic policies and RMB exchange rate to ensure a foreseeable prospect for its businesses.     Minister of Commerce Chen Deming made the remarks Sunday at the Canton Fair, an important barometer of China's foreign trade, in Guangzhou City, capital of southern Guangdong Province.     In the following months, China would maintain stability of the macro-economic policies, stick to the proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy, Chen said.     Meanwhile, the RMB exchange rate should also maintain relatively stable so that domestic manufacturers and exporters can better predict and adjust to the market, Chen added.     Chen said the number of participants to the fair and the trade volume showed China's foreign trade was recovering, but uncertainties remained.     Chen urged Chinese enterprises to enhance their competitiveness with better quality and lower cost by technological upgrading and restructuring. "Next year, our focus will be on the quality of export products," he said.     "Enhancing competitiveness with better product quality and brand-building is also an effective way of avoiding trade protectionism," Chen added.     In the previous three quarters this year, 19 countries and regions have launched 88 trade remedy investigations against Chinese goods, totaling 10.2 billion U.S. dollars.     "In addition to the recovering export, China's import is also on the rise, contributing significantly to the recovery of the world economy," Chen said.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin has called for adequate preparation for next year's annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).     A meeting of the CPPCC National Committee's chairperson and vice chairpersons decided Saturday to open the annual full session of the top political advisory body on March 3 next year.     Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said the session, together with the annual full meeting of the National People's Congress, is of great significance in deepening reform, tackling the global financial crisis, advancing social and economic development, and ensuring stability next year.     Zhao Qizheng, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, was appointed the spokesman for the annual session in March. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States on Tuesday called on Iran to "engage constructively" with the P5+1 and to "cooperate fully" with the IAEA to facilitate a satisfactory outcome.     The call was made in a joint statement issued here after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The two sides reaffirmed their strong support for a comprehensive and long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through negotiations.     "The two sides agreed that Iran has the right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and it should fulfill its due international obligations under that treaty," said the statement.     The two sides welcomed the talks in Geneva on Oct. 1 between the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and Iran as "a promising start" towards addressing international concerns about Iran's nuclear program, and expressed their readiness to continue that engagement as soon as possible.     They emphasized in the joint statement that all efforts should be made to take confidence building steps and to call on Iran to respond positively to the proposal of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). 

BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has stressed the importance of independent innovation amid the global financial crisis and called on engineering workers to boost research to serve the country's economic development.     Wu, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark during his visit to the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) on Wednesday.     Every major achievement that China has made could not be realized without technological breakthroughs and innovations contributed by the engineering academicians and experts, Wu said.
