LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One of the three Louisville police officers involved in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor is being fired.The city’s mayor, Greg Fischer, announced Friday that the police department is initiating termination procedures against officer Brett Hankison, 44.“Unfortunately, due to a provision in state law that I very much would like to see changed, both the Chief and I are precluded from talking about what brought us to this moment, or even the timing of this decision,” the mayor said in a statement.According to a termination letter obtained by WLKY, Hankison was informed of his firing Friday morning.The other two officers involved in the fatal shooting, 47-year-old Jon Mattingly and 42-year-old Myles Cosgrove, remain with the department, but have been placed on administrative reassignment, the Courier Journal reports.As part of a narcotics investigation, the officers used a battering ram to knock down Breonna Taylor’s door as they served a no-knock warrant in the early morning hours of March 13.During the incident, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, has said that he thought the officers were intruders and fired a warning shot. The officers returned fire, shooting Taylor eight times, and she died in the hall of her apartment. No drugs were found.Thursday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron held a press conference, where he asked for patience from the public as his office investigates the shooting.Taylor's death is one of a handful of African Americans who have died at the hands of police officers or former police officers in 2020. Marc Short, the chief of staff for Vice President Mike Pence, has contracted COVID-19, according to The New York Times and Bloomberg.Pence's staff says the Vice President tested negative for the virus on Saturday.According to the Times, Pence's office released a statement Saturday night saying that even though Pence had close contact with Short in recent days, he "will maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel.”The announcement came shortly after Bloomberg reported Saturday night that another one of Pence's top aides, Marty Obst, had also tested positive for the virus."Today, Marc Short, Chief of Staff to the Vice President, tested positive for COVID-19, began quarantine and assisting in the contact tracing process," a statement from Pence press secretary Devin O'Malley read, according to Axios. "Vice President Pence and Mrs. Pence both tested negative for COVID-19 today, and remain in good health. While Vice President Pence is considered a close contact with Mr. Short, in consultation with the White House Medical Unit, the Vice President will maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel."Short and Obst are just the latest high-ranking White House officials to contract COVID-19. Max Booth is from Redondo Beach and was excited to go to Maine for a summer camp for the second year. This year, that didn’t happen because of coronavirus, leaving Max at home. Then, his grandparents stepped in to save the day.Tim and Joy Booth live in Pacific Beach and said right around when Max found out he would be staying home for the summer, beaches and public places in their area started opening up, so they took advantage and planned a substitute summer camp for the 10-year-old.“It gave us real happiness to figure out how to make something that was at least a little bit similar to what he might have had,” said Joy.The trio spent the last week exploring the San Diego area, completing a long list of activities like cutting wood and barbecuing at a park, going to the beach, playing at a water park, practicing archery, hiking and observing nature, completing a junior park ranger program at the Cabrillo Monument and more. They even took the time to give back to the community, spending a day shoveling sand off of steps in Pacific Beach.
