SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The four executive orders the president signed Saturday aimed at helping both working and unemployed Americans during the ongoing pandemic is not the most efficient way to help the nation, according to a local expert.Dr. Alan Gin, University of San Diego Professor of Economics at the Economics Research Center, said the national issue needs a national relief package, instead of an order that pulls from multiple pools, like the CARES Act and other emergency funds. The judge ruled her paperwork was in order and she deserved her unemployment checks. That was three weeks ago and she hasn't seen a dime.Thankfully her husband's unemployment funds came through and supported them until they Solterra Winery and Kitchen hired them.When she heard about the president's Executive Order she didn't have much faith. "Spending five months fighting for my money, yeah it's great that that money will continue on if I do lose my job, yeah 0 a week will help, but I don't know if I'll see that money either so I'm just hoping my restaurant stays open."Twenty-five percent of the 0 a week for unemployed Americans is supposed to come from the state. In California, Dr. Gin says that's money we don't have, "tax revenues are down considerably with economic activity reduced, both the income tax and the sales tax." Dr. Gin added California has to have a balanced budget each year by law, but the federal government can borrow."Traditional macroeconomic theory says that should have a negative impact, whether on inflation or higher interest rates so far we haven't had either one," Dr. Gin said it could happen further down the road.The president if he is re-elected he would cut the payroll tax that funds the dwindling Social Security fund and Medicare.Dr. Gin said that is something Democrats and Republicans have been against, and "there's a question of whether or not the president can do that without congressional authorization."All of this affecting little Wilder's future, his parents still waiting and hoping for some financial relief."It wasn't until I got into my restaurant and could walk with cash every night you know? Besides that I'm just waiting so I'm still months behind. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Florida school shooting is conjuring painful memories for an uncle who calls his nephew the "14th Columbine victim.""You get choked up and then you're mad," said Tim Barnes.It was a flood of different emotions, as Barnes watched coverage of the tragedy in Florida.April 19th, 1999, as news broke about the massacre at Columbine High through frantic 911 calls, the San Diegan had his nephew Greg on his mind: A Columbine High student and one of the top basketball players in Colorado.Greg did survive the shootings, but one of his best friends did not. Greg was among several students who tried to keep the girl's basketball coach alive."From my understanding, he was holding Coach Sanders when he bled to death," said Barnes.Two months later, Barnes sat down with his nephew.    "Everything's cool. I'm good. I'm fine. Don't really want to talk about it. And that scared me. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The bomb squad was called to the 2300 block of Meadow Lark Drive around 6:20 p.m. after a man reported he found WWII-era Japanese grenades.The man, Mike Carter, is a former Marine and said his training kicked in when he found the three gnarled pieces of metal."I just figured it would be the right thing to do to dispose of them properly and not throw them in the trash," Carter said.He is a hobbyist, buying items like radio-controlled cars, helicopters and other toys, and then he sells them online. One remote control helicopter that he said he paid for is actually valued closer to ,500.This was his second time buying a storage locker and his interest was piqued by a Saturn IV Rocket. With it came a wooden box he put in the bed of his truck.As he worked his way through the items inside, he came across the bombs.Carter said he took a picture of them, then put them back where he found them and called the bomb squad.He said he was never nervous about them exploding, saying they've been around at least 75 years.His street was shut down for about an hour.
