Two U.S. senators have filed an amendment to legislation that would replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth Day as a federal holiday.“In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt,” said Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) in a press release. “We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.”U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced mid-June that he was introducing a bipartisan bill that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday.“Juneteenth is a day in our history that redefined the meaning of freedom and equality in America,” said Senator James Lankford (R-OK). “Throughout our history, we have strived to become a more perfect union and Juneteenth was a huge step in attaining that goal. Veterinarians have a warning for pet owners about an ingredient in some foods — including peanut butter — that can be toxic to your pet.It's a sweetener, called xylitol, that's found in different brands of peanut butter, and it can make your pet sick, or even kill them. The ingredient can also cause liver failure."It's kind of horrible to think about because it's common knowledge — everyone gives their dog peanut butter," Laura Lovely said.Lovely said it's devastating to learn her dog Sweetie's favorite snack could send her to the emergency room."Whenever she wants kind of a healthy treat, because it has a lot of protein, and when she takes her medication," Lovely said.It's a food Lovely said she and Sweetie both enjoy."Xylitol is a wonderful low calorie sweetener for you and me but it can be deadly for our dogs," veterinarian Dr. Christopher Byers said.It's not just in peanut butter. Byers said you'll find xylitol in a number of products."Certain brands of peanut butter, toothpaste, certain gums, certain breath mints," Byers said.He said your dog can be exposed to it by accident."One of the more common gums that we encounter in the emergency room is Orbit," Byers said. "Orbit is a great product, but it does contain xylitol."Within a half-hour, he said, your dog's blood sugar will start to plummet."They can be lethargic. They can collapse. They can even have seizures," Byers said.So it's essential for all dog owners to check labels, he said."I think it's awful," Lovely said. "if it's not healthy for dogs, how is it supposed to be healthy for us as well?" Byers said they see xylitol intoxication in dogs several times a week, and that if you see the signs, get your dog to the emergency room as soon as possible. 1791

Tris Pharma issued a voluntary recall notice on Wednesday for Infants' Ibuprofen Concentrated Oral Suspension due to products that have been found to potentially have higher concentrations of ibuprofen.The recall states that some infants who may be more susceptible to a higher potency level of drug may be more vulnerable to permanent NSAID-associated renal injury.The recall says that nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, or more rarely, diarrhea are possible adverse effects. UNIVERSITY CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - A car crashed into a veterinary clinic near La Jolla Friday night. No people or animals were injured when a car plowed into the building on Town Center Dr. at 9:30 p.m. San Diego Fire Department says the driver told them he accidentally drove into the the front of the Cote Animal Hospital. There was a staffer inside the vet hospital with animals when it happened. The 75-year-old male driver got out of the car himself and was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. 513
