Fast food jobs pay some of the lowest wages in the country, giving workers little reason to stick around if they get a better offer and proving costly to employers who need to find people to replace them.In California, one Chick-fil-A franchisee says he's trying to break the cycle.Eric Mason, who for the last three years has owned a Chick-fil-A off the highway near the Sacramento airport, says that next week he'll start hiring "hospitality professionals" starting at an hour, up from the to an hour he pays now."When we go to the living wage, we're looking for people who are trying to raise families, improve their lifestyle," he told ABC10 News on May 26."Maybe they could just work one job, and then it's sustainable. What that does for the business is provide consistency, someone that has relationships with our guests. It's going to be building a long-term culture."Mason's marketing manager Marena Weisman confirmed to CNNMoney that the franchise would be hiring between 35 and 45 people at the new rate, for work in both the front and the back of the house, and that all current employees are encouraged to apply for the positions.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fast food cooks in the Sacramento area make an average of .42 an hour, about a dollar higher than the national level.Even though California's minimum wage is currently an hour, and will rise steadily to by 2022, Mason's jump is unusual."All responsible employers are preparing for the impact of the increasing minimum wage, but they are usually doing it over time and planning for it," says Carey Klosterman, director of research and compensation services at the California Employers Association.One reason why: Even employees making just a little bit more than the minimum wage tend to expect raises too. So if employers raise wages too quickly, it can get expensive."While increasing the wage to this level at a fast food restaurant is commendable, I don't foresee that many businesses will likely be following in their footsteps," Klosterman says.Such big hikes in wages are also especially rare in franchised industries, where the headquarters often charges steep royalties and controls many aspects of the operation — including prices and promotions. That can make life difficult for franchisees in areas with higher fixed costs like wages."If you're in a territory where labor is much higher than the rest of the country, you could be underwater," says Peter Lagarias, an attorney for franchisees based in San Rafael, California. "When these kinds of pressures all build up, you can understand that franchisees are hurting."Lagarias hasn't seen the franchise agreement for Chick-fil-A, which is relatively new to California, so it's not clear whether an owner-operator could pass along increased labor costs by charging higher prices. Chick-fil-A is unusual in that each owner is limited to one store apiece, which keeps them more involved in day-to-day operations.A spokeswoman from Chick-fil-A's corporate office said only that local operators make their own hiring and wage decisions.However, Mason's strategy could pay off in the long run.Research has shown that raising wages can reduce turnover, which in the restaurant industry can be as high as 100% per year. Each time a worker leaves, it costs the restaurant owner money because they then have to fill the shift with someone else.Mason is also correct to point out that many low-wage workers have to hold down multiple jobs at a time in order to survive, and that full-time work at a livable wage is something many would try hard to keep."The reason people leave low wage jobs is that they're trying to find something just a little bit better," says Sylvia Allegretto, a labor economist at the University of California, Berkeley.At an hour, Mason's "hospitality professional" positions could be practically immune from turnover."You're going to try very hard to get that job, and you're going to be a very good, diligent productive worker," Allegretto says. "Because if you lose that job, your next job will be back down close to the minimum wage."That may position Mason's store to succeed in what's rapidly become a job seekers' market. Sacramento's unemployment rate tracks the national average, which is currently 3.9%. (KGTV) — A monitor lizard on the lam in North County has been captured, but experts say there is another one loose in the area.Friday evening, reptile expert Susan Nowicke captured the lizard, now named "Esco," in an Escondido pond, swimming for nearly an hour for the chance to secure the animal. Neighbors had previously spotted the lizard several times near the ponds off Waterhouse Glen for about a year."Esco" however, is three-feet-long while the one being sought was four-feet-long, according to Nowicke. If their muscular tails whip a child or animal, it can lead to severe bruising or welts. Nowicke believes "Esco" and the other lizard either escaped or were turned loose by their owners. She says as babies monitor lizards are small and manageable pets. But six months later, they grow exponentially in size and become very difficult to handle. Most of the monitor lizards at her museum and education center, EcoVivarium off South Juniper St. in Escondido, are captured strays or surrenders. "They're thinking, 'Oh, it's going to grow up and be my best friend. It's just like a dog.' No, it's not a dog, it's a wild animal," Nowicke said.The lizards can grow up to seven and a half feet long, though the one captured in Escondido was only about three feet long. While the lizards are larger than most wildlife living in neighborhoods, it's difficult to catch because it can hide in trees, ponds, and even storm drains.Nowicke has taken "Esco" into the EcoVivarium and has him under a 30-day quarantine. She hopes to find the other lizard soon, to end what she calls "Monitor Watch."The lizard isn't the first noteworthy creature to roam our neighborhoods in the last year. ENGLEWOOD, Colo -- Englewood School District confirmed it is investigating a "fight club" after a video on social media from one of its middle schools made its way into the public light. Scripps station KMGH in Denver received a video of two students at Englewood Middle School fighting, and that parent is concerned her child might be next. According to that parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, there are "fight club social media pages" with videos from fights at Englewood Middle School. One of those videos was recorded on April 5. The video shows one student assaulting another, according to officials at Englewood Schools. The district said the student responsible is now facing disciplinary and legal action. Englewood Police Department sent a statement that one girl was issued a summons for assault. KMGH was not able to find the social media pages, but the district confirmed it is aware of the social media groups and are trying to find those who are responsible for those pages to hold them accountable. The mother who contacted KMGH said through text that those social media pages spread that her child may be the next target and she's "petrified to send her back to school." The district said it will be increasing its security presence at the Englewood Campus as a result. 1349

(KGTV) - The Encinitas City Council hopes that a compromise on a controversial bike safety plan will be able to satisfy casual cyclists who feel Coast Highway is not safe, as well as sport cyclists who like being able to zip along current the bike lanes.The route through the Cardiff community between Encinitas and Solana Beach is believed to be the most frequently ridden corridor for bicyclists in San Diego County.The debate began when the city began looking at replacing the current bike lanes with "protected" bike lanes. These will use curbs and bollard posts to separate the lanes from vehicle traffic.City Councilmember Kellie Shay Hinze believes this plan will make the area safer for commuters, beach-goers, and families who would prefer a safe option to ride bikes over driving. Furthermore, she believes there will be environmental benefits, as well."If residents are able to access this beach on foot or by bike, then we free up parking spaces for people that might be coming from farther away and we reduce the congestion that we generate as a city on our roads," Hinze said.However, avid sport cyclists believe protected bike lanes are more dangerous."That is a trap to a cyclist going fast," said cyclist Karl Rudnick. "I would never ride in that."Rudnick explained that funneling all cyclists into lanes divided from the road by curbs and railings gives cyclists who are riding at high speeds nowhere to go when attempting to pass by slower riders. He was surprised to hear that there were safety concerns along that portion of Coast Highway."It was a real eye opener to realize that there's a lot of people who don't ride their bikes who find that stretch very dangerous- the very stretch that I consider the safest, most beautiful stretch in the county," said Rudnick.Rudnick and Hinze both support the compromise plan. While the city will move forward with the protected lanes, it will also paint "sharrows" in the #2 lane of the highway. These indicate to drivers that cyclists have equal right of way to use that lane of traffic. There will also be signage to let drivers know cyclists have legal access to the highway. This is part of an education process to allay fears that many drivers do not know what sharrows indicate.City staff are still working on the specific plans and there is currently no timetable for installation. 2378
