SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Active military members are saying thank you to those who have served by delivering food to veterans in honor of Veterans Day.The servicemen and women partnered with Meals on Wheels to deliver the food Monday.Meals on Wheels serves about 500 veterans a day. Many of them can't leave their homes. Local Navy members say they decided to help deliver the items to say thank you for their service. "It's everyone's responsibility to take care of the previous generations," says Petty Officer First Class Ryian Harris. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman was sentenced in a federal courtroom Wednesday for stealing mail from nearly 120 San Diegans and cashing stolen checks at banks.Marie Crystal Mays, 33, was sentenced to four years in prison for conspiring to steal mail from residents, including in the Rancho Pe?asquitos area, and defrauding banks in order to cash the stolen checks, according to the Office of the United States Attorney Southern District of California.Prosecutors say the investigation identified at least 119 victims.Mays pleaded guilty in August 2019 to conspiracy, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, possession of stolen mail, and possession with intent to unlawfully use five or more identification documents.As part of her scheme, she stole credit cards, checks, and money orders from mailboxes, authorities say. She then created a bank account in a victim's name, deposited stolen checks, and withdrew money for herself.A judge also ordered Mays to pay ,950.66 in restitution to four banks and credit unions.“The people of San Diego deserve the peace of mind of knowing that when they send or receive mail, thieves won’t steal it from their mailboxes and scavenge for credit cards, checks and personally identifiable information,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “The defendant’s conduct showed a callous and selfish disregard for scores of citizens’ privacy.” 1377

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police officer is showing his gratitude this holiday season after an incredible display of heroism.It was at the end of his graveyard shift when he heard panic over the scanner."It's moving pretty quick, ooohh standby. It went over the… it went over the cliff. I was not in pursuit. He says adrenaline, police training, but mostly his father-instinct kicked in."I had a two-year-old daughter at home, so when I'm looking in the water, it's her who is floating in the water," Wiese said. His brave actions have since been recognized many times. He was on his way to get lunch with his family when he heard an active shooter call on the scanner. Moments later, he spotted the suspect. Without backup, he convinced the Poway Synagogue shooter to surrender. Officer Wiese took him into custody.Wiese says his competitive spirit motivates him to be a better version of himself every day, to show resilience and strength for his community."If you feel like you're going to win, then incidents like this, like at Sunset Cliffs, 'I'm going to win this incident. I'm going to save these girls in this man.' At the synagogue, 'I'm going to win. I'm going to go home to my family, and he is going to go to jail. and the community is going to be safe.'" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An injured cyclist is searching for answers along with some items that disappeared after a possible hit-and-run crash Monday.Rick Cessinger started biking from Ocean Beach to his home in Mission Beach around 4 p.m. Monday after leaving the home of his friend, Janet Kelleher."He put his backpack and helmet on, and rides off," said Kelleher.The handyman biked down Catalina Boulevard. About a mile and a half away, there was a crash near the intersection of Catalina Boulevard and Tennyson Street, leaving Cessinger unconscious. A day later, Cessinger woke up in a hospital with six broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, a punctured lung, and little memory of what happened.A photo of the bike helmet reveals it was cracked in the back. Kelleher retired from a career in law enforcement."It seems to me he was hit from the back and ejected off the bike ... It's bad. It's disgraceful. How does someone hit someone and drive off?" said Kelleher.That question is just one of many. Here's another one: Was Cessinger also robbed? Paramedics left Cessinger a bag with his helmet and shoes. His backpack, containing his wallet and phone, is missing.
