A gunman and three female hostages were found dead at a military veterans home in Northern California on Friday night, officials said, a grim end to a standoff that lasted nearly eight hours.Shortly before 6 p.m., officers stormed into the room where the gunman had held the hostages at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, said Chris Childs with the California Highway Patrol.They found the gunman and the three hostages dead, he said. A family in Tennessee was able to escape their burning house thanks to their neighbor's rescue dog.The home in the Franklin, Tennessee neighborhood of Twin Oaks was seriously damaged in a fire caused by fireworks, officials say.Neighbor Jess LeCates said his 3-year-old Belgian malinois Roux was barking frantically at his front door around 10:20 p.m., about an hour after the homeowner threw fireworks near a trashcan outside, sparking the fire.Roux noticed the fire and led LeCates to the home where the roof and garage were already on fire. LeCates said he started banging on his neighbor's door to wake up the family of three and get them out of the house."I tried to put out the fire while the lady who lived there called 911," LeCates said.Thanks to Roux, everyone inside the home, including their pets, were able to escape unharmed.The Fire Marshal said the fire burned through some exterior features and much of the attic, causing an estimated ,000 in damage.Consumer fireworks are prohibited in Franklin.WTVF first reported this story. 1055

A burly kangaroo whose buff physique shot him to internet fame has died at the age of 12."We have lost our beautiful boy, Roger," Chris Barnes, owner of the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Australia, announced on Saturday on Facebook.Roger, who was 6 foot 7 inches and weighed nearly 200 pounds in his prime, was rescued by Barnes as a joey after his mother was killed on a highway.In a video tribute to the marsupial, Barnes said he was inspired to set up the 188-acre sanctuary in Alice Springs to house the famous kangaroo and his growing harem of wives."I built it so they had a place to live," he said. Roger was the sanctuary's alpha male for many years, Barnes added. "He grew up to be a kangaroo that people from all over the world have grown to love as much as we love him too."Roger's death led to an outpouring of grief on social media. Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia called him "such a proud strong boy" in an Instagram post, while the Australian government's tourism agency described him as a "true icon."The beefcake kangaroo became an internet sensation in 2015, when a picture of him crushing a metal bucket with his bare paws went viral on social media."As a man kangaroo if you want to have a wife you are going to have to fight for her," Barnes told CNN at the time. "Now you try and get your opponent in a big bear hug basically and wrestle them, and Roger did that to the bucket."Despite his bulging biceps, the kangaroo could not defeat the aging process, suffering from a loss of vision and arthritis in later life.But Barnes assured fans in a 2016 video that Roger was loving retirement. A California judge halted Stormy Daniels' lawsuit against Michael Cohen for 90 days while the criminal investigation of President Donald Trump's personal attorney moves forward in New York.Cohen had asked to halt the lawsuit because he would assert his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself while the criminal investigation continues. He said he wouldn't be able to fully respond to questions that arose in Daniels' lawsuit.In short, the lawsuit put Cohen in the hot seat at the same time he's fending off the criminal probe.Because Cohen was the "alleged mastermind" behind a hush agreement and settlement payment with Daniels over her alleged affair with Trump, Judge James Otero wrote, he would have to choose whether he would take the Fifth or defend himself on "every major aspect" of the details in the case.Otero further said he believes Cohen could be indicted. 888

A huge fundraiser to support both students and historically black colleges and universities has decided to go virtual this year. United Negro College Fund says now, more than ever, help is needed to not only keep students applying, but to keep them enrolled in school.Even as a kid, Velvet Gunn was always singing, dancing, writing and painting. She owes that support to her mom, who she says would let Velvet follow her every whim. “She’s extremely happy that I got my degree but also that I’m getting paid for my art!” Gunn said.Gunn calls herself a "creative freelancer." “I taught theater for 10 years, I paint, I sing, wherever my creativity brings me, I do graphic art, I do web design," Gunn said. But, getting to where she is today wasn't easy. “When I went to college or was deciding to go to college I knew I wanted to do something in the arts, I had the talent and the determination, but I didn’t have the money," Gunn said.She had her eye on Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. They were going to give her just the right amount of money for her to attend. Things were going well, until her junior year when she ran out of money. “I went on the website, I had heard of UNCF before but I had never gone on the site until my junior year. And they saved me. It was so easy, it was personal," Gunn said.Right on time, the funding came in and Velvet was able to graduate. Now, she uses her degree to support herself and her art. Brian Bridges, Vice President of Research and Member Engagement at the United Negro College Fund says stories like Velvet's are what drive the organization to continuously look for support. Since 1944, the organization has helped over 500,000 students get an education, and raised over billion dollars for students and colleges.“To hear some of these students, their testimonials sometimes, teary eyed, telling stories how they wouldn’t have gone to college without the UNCF scholarship or how they didn’t have an idea where their life might have gone or given the background they came from this would be transformative simply because of the scholarship UNCF gave them," Bridges said.UNCF surveyed more than 5,000 students across their member institutions to understand how the pandemic was affecting them. The results were disheartening. “Over half said their financial stability had declined during COVID-19, 40 percent said mental well-being had declined and those were 2 and 3 times more likely to want to transfer to be closer to home to help their family,” said Bridges.And he says, while some reported mental improvement, their responses said otherwise. "Those stories are heartbreaking. 'I don’t know where my next meal is from, everyone in my household is unemployed, I’ve had to take on 50 hours of work in a hospital rife with COVID and it’s a mental strain on me.'”The organization's annual Walk for Education is one of the many fundraisers that supports students. This September 19th, the walk will be virtual. They're urging people to participate any way they can.“Whether they want to walk, run, walk, bike, dance, we encourage any type of activity along with the support that would come with that in order to participate in the walk and be supportive of UNCF," said Bridges.He says he wants people to know that all the money they raise goes to support students and the schools they attend. That money supported students like Velvet, who says she'll do anything for UNCF.“Every time UNCF has something or is needing someone I’m like 'let me know, I will scream to the heavens and let people know about what you all do,'" Gunn said. 3593
