In a series of unusually candid remarks, the US general in charge of the nation's nuclear arsenal has issued a stark warning that Russia and China are "aggressively" developing new high-speed, or hypersonic, weapons that the US currently has no defense against. The weapons might not be operational for several years, but Gen. John Hyten, the four-star head of US Strategic Command, is warning that changes to missile defenses are urgently needed or the US will be unable to detect them when they are operational."China has tested hypersonic capabilities. Russia has tested. We have as well. Hypersonic capabilities are a significant challenge," Hyten told CNN in an exclusive interview. "We are going to need a different set of sensors in order to see the hypersonic threats. Our adversaries know that."Hyten and other military officials say the current generation of missile detecting satellites and radars won't be enough to detect these new generation weapons. Hypersonic is generally defined as a speed of Mach 5 or over 3,806 miles per hour."We've watched them test those capabilities," Hyten told Congress last week. But with unusual public candor about potential US military shortfalls, he acknowledged "we don't have any defense that could deny the employment of such a weapon against us, so our response would be our deterrent force, which would be the triad and the nuclear capabilities that we have to respond to such a threat."Hypersonic missiles fly into space after launch, but then come down and fly at high speeds on a flight path similar to an airplane. Their lower trajectory make them more difficult for US missile defense satellites and radars to detect. Russia has openly stated it is developing high-speed air-launched missiles as well as underwater hypersonic drones. The Pentagon is currently writing a review of its missile defenses to help determine what new capabilities might be needed to deal with new classes of attack weapons. Hyten gave Congress a hint of what may be in that review stating "the first thing we need is better sensor capability, better tracking capabilities to make sure we can characterize and then respond to that threat."He also called for improved US warheads, essentially "better kill vehicles on the top of our interceptors so that those kill vehicles become more and more lethal." The Pentagon is also working on concepts for interceptor missiles that repel a barrage of enemy attack missiles. Current US missile defenses are designed to only shoot down a small number of enemy missiles. The US focus has largely been to work on hypersonic technologies across the board. But Russia is now well into testing some of its systems. Earlier this month Russia showed video of what the Kremlin said was an air-launched hypersonic ballistic missile. When asked how far along the Russian hypersonic program is, Hyten told CNN, "I don't want to put a who's winning the race, I'll just say there is a race."When asked how soon it could be before the Russians have an operational hypersonic weapon that could reach the US, Hyten said, "It's similar to the North Korea problem. If you continue to pursue that technology, you will get there. And the Russians will get there, the Chinese will get there and we'll get there -- and we'll have to figure out how to deal with that." 3323

If you get a letter in the mail from the IRS, you might want to open it.In an attempt to track down some Americans who did not receive an economic impact check earlier this year, the IRS said on Thursday it is sending 9 million letters to Americans who do not file a traditional tax return. The letter will encourage recipients of the letter to visit the IRS.gov before an Oct. 15 deadline to register for a stimulus check. For most Americans, the checks are worth ,200.“The IRS continues to work hard to reach people eligible for these payments,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These mailings are the latest step by the IRS to reach as many people as possible for these important payments. We are releasing this state-by-state information so that state and local leaders and organizations can better understand the size of this population in their communities and assist them in claiming these important payments. Time is running out to claim a payment before the deadline.”But the IRS says just because you receive a letter does not automatically make you eligible. To be eligible, the IRS requires that an individual is a US citizen or resident alien, have a work-eligible Social Security Number and can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.Americans who earn less than ,200 a year, or married couples earning less than ,400 a year, are not required to submit a federal tax return. These Americans, if they did not apply for a stimulus check, would have been excluded from receiving a check unless they earn another form of government income, such as Social Security. Those who believe they are eligible for a check don’t have to wait for the letter. A tool is available on the IRS’ webpage by clicking here.As a reminder, here is who is eligible for a stimulus check:,400 – Couples earning less than 0,000 a year (couples earning 0,000 - 8,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Individuals earning less than ,000 a year (individuals earning ,000 - ,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Heads of households earning less than 2,500 (heads of households earning 2,500 - 6,000 will receive a prorated check).0 - Each dependent child age 16 or under as of Dec. 31, 2019 (for qualifying individuals and couples). 2291

If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of John Wood’s kitchen. The owner of 29 Diner has a big personality, but he might have a bigger heart.“We have the philosophy that we want to put the community first, always, but especially during the pandemic,” said Wood. While many restaurants have been trying to figure out how to serve takeout and keep the lights on, Wood and his team have been trying to figure out how to feed people in need.“We decided that we were going to turn our restaurant into a free food pantry and a free food kitchen,” said Wood.It started as a way to feed kids who wouldn’t be getting meals at schools anymore during the pandemic, but the 29 Diner team saw the need was greater.“We knew that we needed to do more than just feed the kids. So we decided to not only provide hot meals but we needed to open a community pantry as well,” said Wood.29 Diner has been a staple in Fairfax, Virginia, for a long time.“We love the service. It’s so friendly and being part of the community, it feels so natural,” said Melissa Schous, a customer who stopped in for lunch.Wood has been providing free meals and groceries to whoever needs them since the pandemic hit.“The diner became a seven-day-a-week, 12-hour-a-day free food pantry, free food kitchen, feeding thousands of meals daily. We had cars that wrapped around the diner feeding 60 to 80 families a day,” said Wood. The diner takes donations online, or in person with donation jars all around the diner. They use that money to buy the food they give away. While there wasn’t anyone coming in to grab food today, the diner converted their food truck into a mobile food pantry to deliver food throughout the community.Wood's willingness to help others in need is benefiting his business in other ways. And while Wood is willing to do what he takes to give his community a hand up, it’s having other benefits for his business.“Expanded our hours of operation here, we hired additional folks. So we completely reversed the trends of the pandemic of the impact into a small business, because we were taking care of our community,” said Wood. That’s right, 29 Diner is hiring, in this economy!Wood wouldn’t say he exact numbers, but said before the pandemic, he had enough cash to last a few months if business took a turn. Since his efforts to feed Fairfax, he’s seen that pile increase which he says he wants to use to keep feeding families.“We believe that if we touch you in the heart, if you believe in our community, you’ll want to come in and give us your money. You’re going to want to come in and patronize our business because of our goodwill to the community,” said Wood. And if you’re they’re for the good will, you might want to try the food too.“You walk in, they greet you like you’ve been there before and the food just feels like your aunt cooked it,” said Schous.Nothing like a hot meal to fill your belly, and maybe your heart too. 2916

If you think Charleston, South Carolina, has plenty of history within its pre-Colonial grounds, just look at what's been hiding 160 miles off the city's coast for thousands of years: a giant deep-sea coral reef system. The chief scientist who helped make the discovery called it unbelievable. 300
